Just wondering what everybody's first guitar was, mine was an Electra les paul

Mine was series 10 start copy. It was a log and the fret's buzzed, and it did not stay in tune but it did the trick for a while.

An epi les paul special 2 still have it as my main guitar today plays really nice for the price

Yamaha classical guitar my dad bought for me for $40 at guitar center when I was 10. My first electric guitar was an LTD EX-50 which cost me $200.

Mine was actually my £600 Fender Acoustic, first guitar I fell in love with was my first electric a Squire Strat.

A cheap little Squire strat.

They may have been cheap but the Squier Strats are an awesome beginners guitar, and I have used mine for about 5 years now, still all in good condition.

the brand is New York Pro, and the its a strat copy, worst sounding thing ever, its now somewehere in my closet collecting dust. though it did stay in tune well

We had just moved to Germany. It was 1969 and I got a 'Framus' nylon string accoustic guitar. I bought a 'how to play' book in German (which I couldn't read). I eventually got a half dozen chords down right but didn't know the tunes in the book. I'd listen to Radio Luxembourg (the pop station in English) and try to play along. Eventually I found a guitar magazine at an American PX and sent away for an instructional book and LP. I must have been a dedicated little ****. I was pretty good after that at playing 'On top of Old Smokey'.

Hard to remember, but it looked like a no name copy of a Fender Jaguar. It only cost me about £10 from a second hand shop but it played well enough to get me up and running!

edit. Actually, I'm a liar! I forgot about a cheap, nasty acoustic I'd saved up for about a year earlier. The Jag copy was my first electric!

squier start pack. i still have the guitar, not the amp though. its one with h/s/s and i changed the neck to a dimarzio yjm pickup and the bridge to a seymour duncan distortion.

Some sort of a cruddy 'Herald' which got passed onto me from my big brother who bought it for just £50 and got bored of having a hobby. It was nothing special really, just a basic accoustic didn't even have steal strings. You know, the kind of guitar your parents get you to see if you're going to stick with your new hobby before they let you buy a half decent one.

how does the Duncan Dist. work with the strat? I'm going to try it as well.

My first guitar's a Yamaha C40 Classical Guitar. I still have it and play it on an almost regular basis. Like Heather said, it's the kind of guitar they get you to see if you're going to stick with it although I used my own money and it cost me 140 Euros (about 180$) which is very expensive for that kind of guitar.
My first (and only by now) electric is a Cort Z40. I got it for a quite good price and also like the way it sounds.
@Damien: I was going to get me one of those first, but changed my mind in the last minute, when I found the Cort! It's just RIGHT NOW that I realised they cost the same.

my first guitar was a first act overload
its good for starting out but i beat the hell outa that thing

1st i broke the nut so it slides around
then i broke the bridge witch is now held on with duct tape
then the input jack again duct tape

lost two of the tuning peg covers
neck is warped cus of rain

uhh yah its beat to hell and back

and i STILL play on it just in Eb standard lol

Technically, a right handed SQUIER.
But the first one i really used, is my Lefty EPI-LP 100

you know i tried playin lefty and i can do smoke on the water and thats it lol

good fer you for starting on an Acoustic 1st .. your chops will grow much faster, your chords become meatier and your fingers will become steeled!
I make (really) all my students start this way! (usually on a spare acoustic laying 'round the studio--THEN from 'Mom and Dad')
It's amazing how much faster they learn and how, after a year or so (depending) they "translate" this to an Electric. Its (Electric) 'ease of play' seems to free them immediately. They seem astounded that they 'can play like that' lol !

if ever there was a 'constant' in the world of guitar, it is this:
'start on a nice electric and ya might not have the chops to play that Ac Martin--start on a crappy Acoustic and you will be able to play a log with barbed-wire for strings->big advantage

You couldn't be more correct, Carl. I've thought about that many, many times and I'm very glad I started playing on a Spanish guitar (it IS a bit harder to play than an acoustic). One of the reasons is that I had to practice harder to get my chords right, especially barre chords until I got them RIGHT, so playing chords on an electric is a piece of cake. It's much trickier to play ANYTHING on a Spanish guitar because of the high action, and that leaves you "astounded that you can play like that. lol !"
And I tell you, if you get your hammer ons and pull offs right on a Spanish guitar, you can certainly do it better on an electric, not to mention bends.
I spend about the same time playing on the Acoustic that I spend playing on the electric (which is not a lot) because I believe it helps quite a lot with the technique.

i started on a guitar i borrowed from my brother, he thinks it is a "flamenco" guitar or something? it was a shoddy old acoustic guitar with nylon strings, only 19 frets but the neck started at around the 9th fret, making it almost impossible to play anything higher than the 12th fret.

learned basic chords and an intro to scales, playing melodies on that for about 6 months, then when i moved apartments i took the money that i was SUPPOSED to spend on a washer and dryer and got the squier stratocaster affinity pack. HSS w/ tremolo, blue. it's okay. didn't much care for the action (they said it was perfect but i prefer it a little higher, less buzzing?). it's a decent guitar but i wished i had just gotten an SSS.

right now my goal is to get good enough at guitar to justify buying a "nice" guitar.

I have the blue strat affinity with the 3 single coils and trem lol I want to drop a humbucker in it.

My dad bought a Mark II acoustic some years ago, long before I started playing for real. The action was terrible. You could drop a pencil through it!!! But the first one that was "mine" was a Mini Flying V. For whatever reason it couldn't play chords! It could be perfectly in tune and a G would sound like crap. It would play power chords though and when I "found" them I thought I was the ****!! haha

lol, the very first guitar I ever owned was one of those First Act things. Man, I remember the freakin pickups fell off!

the acoustic guitar i learned on was a Baxon nylon, the bloody thing couldnt stay in tune xD

the electric guitar i started playing on was a '79 Fender US strat. then i bought my Jackson JS30 RHoads
