Hi. . . Marguerite(Margi for short) here
I'm 18, from South Africa, finishing school this year (Cambridge HIGCSE - wikipedia it :P)
Been playing for a year and 5 months now. Taught myself for about 9months and now I have lessons 2x a month. I play a Yamaha FG700MS, love it to bits! Currently struggling with 7th chords on 5th root barre, and practicing some easy Beatles stuff.

HI Margi,
Welcome to town! Sounds like you are taking your practice very seriously.
Ok, you're gonna make us work for this..............
The Higher International General Certificate of Secondary Education (HIGCSE) is a certification offered by Cambridge University for various subjects. It is designed for Southern Africa and offered by many public, private and home-schooling organisations.
It is considered to be equivalent to matric in most countries, but is generally of higher standard and can be used to enter into some universities around the world, including Cambridge University. A student can go on to study a subject on A2 after acquiring an HIGCSE qualification in that subject (a small bridging course is required in some cases).
So what will you study at UNI?
What do 18yr olds listen to musicly in South Africa?
Stick around I think you will find some of our more advanced players very helpful here. (I've been playing for about the same amount of time as you).

Thank you guys! I'm really looking forward to my time here, it looks like a great place to learn and make friends.
To answer Phip's questions:
1. I'm studying Political Sciences next year, if all goes well. Most people can't understand this, as I'm an artsy person (painting etc.) and would have studied that, but economically it isn't possible. (Artists are suffering because of the recession, and the market in SA is limited.)
2. There are a few types of music in South Africa, and most people listen to the popular mainstream stuff from overseas, e.g Lady Gaga, Boy Bands etc. But that isn't my kind of music.
There is a fast growing alternative scene in English and Afrikaans (my home language). Some of these bands are amazing. A few established names are:
- The Parlotones*
- Seether (originally Saron Gas)
- Fokofpolisiekar
- Aking*
- Foto na Dans
- The Dirty Skirts
- Crash Car Burn
* My favorites, check them out if you have the time.
We also like international alternative/rock/heavy metal. I can't really name them all, I think most of the established overseas bands/groups have fans down here. I myself like Kings of Leon, Coldplay, Fall Out Boy etc. Sorry I'm lame when naming music that I like: In general, rock, melodic rock, folk-rock and little bit of metal. NO silly pop/rapping/rnb or house music.

Carl,
Well, for starters you could just browse through some of the existing threads and see if there is anything you'd like to comment on or add to.
Then there is the "pictures of yourself thread" I like to lurk in the shadows there and pounce on unsuspecting members and "phip" them! Look that one over and you'll get the idea.
Many members have submitted short clips and videos of themselves playing, so they are interesting.
Poke around and if you feel motivated start a new thread.
Questions of all types regarding technique and theory are always welcome and never frowned upon. No question is too simple or too complex (so far) for our advanced members (including our moderators, a great bunch of musicians).
Phip
P.S. During my spare time I answer questions about releationships, home surgical proceedures, the origins of the universe and the meaning of life, stuff like that, so I'm here for ya buddy! LOL

Oh yeah, I haven't introduced myself yet! Haven't looked into this forum before ^^
My name is Max, I am 17 and i come from Germany, but I've been recently been moving around to a lot of places, for example i have been living in England for 2 years. I finished school last year and traveled a lot after that, so i got around quite a bit. I even was in Kazakhstan for 2 weeks, and i also lived in Russia for 3 months, haha. i wanted to join Uni this year, but now my plans of Uni have all been postponed due to the army in Germany. It is still compulsory for every man to go to the army for nine months. So i will start that in 2 weeks.
I play guitar for 2 years now and I have a wide variety of musical taste. I listen to music such as: Erik Mongrain, Justin King, over to Kings of Leon, Good shoes, Fratellis, gogol bordello and even The Fall of Troy, A7X, Metallica, so pretty much everything. If its got a good beat to it and it gets my feet tapping then i dont care what genre of music it is really! ha. I can play alright, but my theory is still improvable, so thats why I am here, and looking for some food for my musical brain ^^

Wow we are getting new members coming in like wildfire all of a sudden! Welcome everyone. I'm sure you'l enjoy it around here, I know I have. If you ever want to ask a question about anything there is to know about guitar, I know this is the place.
I'll tell you now though, there are plenty of questions where I'm likely to lurk and just keep quiet until someone else comes along, because I'm usually clueless myself! Often more clueless then whoever's asking is it turns out. But do so, the other members know a lot. Pluck their brains out! |
