I'd rather not release my name, but I'll go by Kvey. I've played Cello for about 4 years now, I learned Piano online and through experimentation, and I'd like to do the same with guitar. I'd wanted one for a while, my amazing friend gave me one of hers, and I've been playing it almost nonstop since then. :D |

Bruce here. Old man but I still love my Rock and Roll. Alice in Chains, Slash and some older stuff. Animals, Robin Trower, Jeff Beck, Humble Pie etc. Really a beginner but played Bass a hundred years ago. Just here to learn as "Rocksmith" kinda ruined the way I was learning. Just touching on some Scales and stuff has improved my playing a bit. Practice every night....2 dogs a girlfriend a house with a white picket fence and a job. |

Hey, fellow musicians and/or music lovers. My name's Chris. I've been playing guitar for something like 16 years, but have only fully devoted my younger years to practice due to adult responsibilities and such. So I'm certainly not the best player, but I do love creating music and rarely learning others' music. (Never been a huge fan of covering songs) Been in a couple of bands years ago, and decided that the blue collar oil field life pays a lot better. I also enjoy playing drums. Mostly I listen to progressive rock, however, I dabble in anything that employs good harmony, melody, or extreme talent. |

Hi, I'm Bob. Like Bruce said, I'm the ole' man. 74, been learning since I was 8, that's about 65 years. Like Ole' time country, 50's Rock-A-Billy and Gospel. Do guitar, base and a little mandolin.
If any one has heard Jimmy Fortune's "I Believe" could you tell me the minor chords he does in the song?
If you're around Norton, VA, stop in and let's jam.
Thanks and God Bless! |

Bob!
Welcome to ya.
74 and from the south. I gotta ask.....Did ya learn from family or on your own or from a teacher? Reason I ask is that I've seen some country boys use some pretty strange looking chord shapes (when I happen to be paying attention) and I always figured those chords were passed down from a father or grandfather and just wondering about how it is for you. I listened to that Jimmy Fortune song and I'd never heard it before. That dude can sing! Don't know the chords he's playing but I'm sure the sheet music must be out there somewhere. Try this link.

hello all... new here playing guitar for 2 years been mostly by ear and now everyone I play with is getting frustrated with my lack of knowledge. that is what led me here , so glad to find this place. I keep reading that people are having a hard time finding people to jam with and I recommend open mic nights it is great for so many reasons especially if your into performing with a band and haven't been on stage yet. I expect to be on this site a lot and posting questions and responses as much as I can because nothing ventured nothing gained...
36 divorced with 3 kids and self employed still play everyday. no excuses.

Hey people;
My name is John Morgans
I live in Bramalea, Ontario, Canada
I'm the old guy that people call the old fool
(so what)
I am not very good with these computor things and I not sure if it will land in the introduce yourself section.
I am most likely older than most of you, but I still like to rock. I wll admit that I love soulful blues and some of the country stuff. I staeted to really dig music in the early "60's" and yes I was one of those hippie fellows who knew how to party. I was in a band back then until I started travelling with my thumb and many other mode I could find. I was the type of guy who would work anywhere to get money just to move on. I ended up working for numerous concert production companies or bands as a roadie setting up stages and equipment. That lasted until my family needed me to come home that was around 1971. I settled into the life of surburbia but not losing my rock side, raised a good family of my and now my Grand kides are graduating from high school. I always planned to pick-up a guitar once I retired and start to relearn to play it properly. But as everyone knows Murphy shows up and gave me a tumor behind my eye. It was not life ending just life altering. Now I am a happy guy who is visually impaired trying to remeber how to play and I will.

Welcome aboard jmorgan! We have plenty of older guys on board the site as I'm sure you'll soon find out. Murphy's a friend of misery, but I hope we can provide what you came looking for.
You should poke around the site a bit to get yourself accustomed to it so you know what's what.
As always, feel free to ask anything music related (and sometimes not!)
Rock on! |

Hello, everyone.
My name is Margret (yes, that really is the correct spelling), and I'm just getting back into playing the guitar after losing a decade of my life to an undiagnosed brain tumor (benign, operable, all gone now, and not coming back, thank goodness).
My guitar is a Tanara that I bought in the late '80s. Tanara is (or was) a brand of guitar made by hand in South Korea, by workers who were seriously underpaid, which made the guitars very inexpensive. Contrary to expectations, however, every once in a while one of those workers would prove to be a master luthier in disquise, which is why I could afford a guitar with a gorgeous voice. I'd feel guilty about taking advantage of these unethical practices, but I got the guitar used, and nothing I did could have helped or hurt the luthier who built it.
She's a classical guitar, and I tend to prefer finger-picking, and the kind of music I mostly play on her is called “filk.” The word refers to the kind of music that S.F. fans sing late at night at conventions, or sometimes at a friend's house if one has a local filk group, as we do here in Denver. The name began as a typo of “folk;” everyone saw it and said “Oh, is that what it's called?” and the name stuck. If you want to hear some examples of it, go to YouTube and do a search on filk, or try hwaet.org, the home page of Cat Faber, who is one of the best composers, lyricists, and performers I've ever encountered. She has sheet music and mp3s of most of her songs available online so that you can download them.
Unfortunately, I have very small hands, which has always made it difficult for me to make chords like C and G. To make it worse, about two years ago I suffered a badly broken left arm, which was in a cast for months. During that time the ligaments in my hand atrophied badly, which makes it even harder to reach chords. I'm doing what my occupational therapist says I should to try to regain full function, but it's taking time. (And, BTW, she considers that playing my guitar again is good therapy.) The only good thing about the broken arm (and it is a very good thing, indeed) is that it got me into the hospital where the brain tumor was finally diagnosed, but I very much wish that could have been done more easily and less painfully (and a lot sooner). I'm fortunate that my guitar survived my missing decade, but I'm having a very difficult time picking it up again. It's way too long since I've played, and I'm sure that I'll be asking here for help with the problems I encounter, and I thank everyone in advance for any assistance you can give me.

I am 58 (March 26 1956 in Howell, MI). I've lived in Graham WA area for a total of 18 years. I have been an active paranormal investigator/ghost hunter since 1990 and then formed a group known as Renegade Investigators of the Paranormal (R. I. P.) in 2009 but made it official in June of 2010.
Being "northern - born and bred", I much prefer the evergreens and snow, in fact the whole changes of the seasons. I have only one small problem living here in Washington, with my telescope I don't have enough "cloudless" nights for star gazing. I share my three bedroom house with my wife Diane, our dogs Weiland and Jesse, also two cats, Oreo, and Dude as well a few of plants (that may very well cause an uprising if I don't water them soon). I have been learning to play my Oscar Schmidt acoustic guitar for the past 3 months, so I'm really just a beginner. I'm also getting a lot of help from my Uncle "Papa Joe" :-)
