MY friends and I started a band and we are playing metal. I was wondering what are some of the best scales for metal?
Thanks |

Any scale is good for metal. It all depends on what context you use the scales in. I know that isn't what you wanted to hear so here you go: Aeolian, Locrian, Dorian, Harmonic Minor, Hungarian Minor, Dominant 7th or Double Harmonic. |

True what Guitarslinger said. It all depends on the context. |

Lydian as it allows for a really smooth and intresting interplay between a major an minor sound especially if you use instead of power chords 1st and 5th you play 3rds instead 1st and maj3rd or 1st and minor 3rd |

The hypochondriac scale is by far the best for metal soloing, but failing that some tasteful application of the Lydian Obsidian works pretty well too.
Hope that helps!

carlsnow, everyone knows that the Hyperbolic Major only exists in theory; seeing as it's based on a retrograde Lydian overtone series from the parallel Neopolitan Sixth it's hardly a practical scale is it, especially in a heavy metal context.
I'll be honest, my experience with Onanistic Major is very limited, is that the one with an augmented 15th? Or am I just being completely stupid and thinking of something totally different?
Ginandtonic Minor I'm not even going into, because it can only exist in the context of an AlcoVom key signature (which again is entirely theoretical, and there are no grounds to prove its existence considering it has NO diatonic qualities whatsoever.)
I'll hand it to you for the Hexadecimal fusion scale though - good shout my friend! However, not so sure about the add13 extension - wouldn't it clash badly with the double augmented 12th?
