Kim Thayil
Cant stress how underrated Kim Thayil is and my top favorites shift but id have to say Thayil is always top 5. Others include Dave Mustaine, Marty Friedman, Miles Zuniga (Fastball) was the reason I picked up the guitar and Carlos Santana. |

If you like Guthrie Govan, you may like Greg Howe, Brett Garsed, or Chris Poland. All from the legato camp! |

Let me think... Some of the guys I dream of playing like are
Pete Loeffler, of Chevelle. - I like how he worked out his way of playing guitar and sing together. He controls his turning really well to allow vary simple form, with a great sound. I wish he could solo, but some of can't and some people, hell that's all they can do (like the guitarist in my band XD).
Tom Morello of sound garden and RAM - Dam, If I could use the guitar like him... He went to Harvard University for his masters in political law, and still managed to put in 8 HOURS of practice! His solos, his chords, the way he makes his guitar sing! I'm sure he has set his guitar on fire once.
Matthew Bellamy, of Muse - I don't know if you guys have seen him live, HE is NUTS! He makes it look easy. They way he runs around, Changes up he songs on the spot. I has also pushed some amazing audio and sound work. Lots of custom Tools that do all kinds of thing. Most of all I can't get over how his riff make you want to jump up and down. |

I agree, almost no one talks about Thayil's skillset. It boggles my mind. |

@ Domigan_Lefty - WOW i didn't know, Thank you for telling me that I made that mistake. I was talking to a friend who looks like Chris Cornell, that and I was thinking audioslave (soundgarden) all got mixed up lol. Some of the song that come out of his act the Nightwatchman are amazing.
@btimm I can't find any videos with Thayil's skillset. If you can show me some tabs or wiki or something that would be great. |

@league - Thank you for the post, fun stuff! Found some more videos after looking some more (and fixing my spelling). I hate it when you hear someone for years and you could have taken the time to look into them and find out more. Then some years later you like "crap I know these songs... F%^K that's a great solo why didn't I think that before the first time..."
So of the sounds he uses on his guitar remind me of Ben Moody a bit only with a faster playing style. |

Those solos are okay to me. But honestly, it is the main riffs and not the music that I like from Thayil. I think it is more his creativeness in writing music and not his shredding that inspire me and amaze me. Although the solo in "Like Suicide" is pretty bad ass. |

Laugh in my face with your shredders - but simply Luther from Johnny Cash's original band. I'm encouraged by him, because he was a simple guitarist who could be slow and apparently took a while to learn anything - yet his mistakes created a unique playing style so many people wanted to get right. I'm not a fast learner - honestly I can be a dope and take forever to pick up new skills. So that's a great inspiration for me to look at. |

Hey Emp! I know - didn't play for quite a wee while and so it didn't feel right visiting the forum. The shame! Haha. But, I've come back on the fretboard after quitting animal care! You'll be seeing more of me again :-)
I should add Luther's surname was Perkins. He plucked in a certain 'Boom chika boom-boom' way. Lemme know how you get on with searching him. If you still don't quite get his style I'll get my Cash autobiography and quote it in Johnny's words (which better than mine - I even highlighted them to remember! lol) |
