careful with those blanket-statements, JO5H;
I don't listen to "70's and 80's classic metal".
(wherever that is)
Just as, I doubt, you listen to much Bill Frissel,
but variety, as they say, is the spice of life ..certainly this is also true of the musics we each enjoy.
try some of the stuff ya see folks listening too, ya may think its crap, but ya just might find a new love....ya never know.

Um... I don't listen to any "Classic Metal" or metal for that matter. I could care less about it.
I listen to 80's pop, 90's pop, Classic Rock, modern rock, classical, folk, blues, and a bit of jazz
Metal is not my style. If it has distortion or lots of crazy effects... I usually don't like it. |

But is that necessary in order to learn to play, prob not, but nice to have friends with similar interests i guess? ok, well sorry to disapoint you......
I listen to mostly chamber music (you know, those three piece quartets) and rap, I can't get enough rap! And showtunes too. LOL
I think you can see a wide variety of musical taste here in this forum. I have been stuck in the sixties and early seventies rock. But i also dig blues, jazz (some styles) and soul. And lately with the suggestions of some members I have opened up my ears to some new and fantastic artists of quite a few genre's that i never tried before.
(never too old to learn, unless you're dead)

Sure there are some Metal fans Like Me,league, ozzfan Etc.. And lots of us also enjoy 70's and 60's music, but dont generalize,as much as i like 80's hard rock or heavy Metal,i love fusion, jazz, blues, latin, electronic etc...Jazz Likes Soundtrack Music,Jazz,Prog Metal ( I Think..) etc etc.. Carl Enjoys RAWK!!
The point is,just because most of us dont like Your Metalcore and post hardcore, doesn't Mean you've got to critizice what we like or what we should listen to,Just my point of view
Oh and. No,i dont like Metalcore or Extreme Hardocre Screaming Bands, they, for me,Are the decadence of modern metal Music |

You know what I discovered while being here for more than a year now?? NO ONE HERE LIKES GUITAR!!! :O
Pretty please keep an open mind and take a look at every topic/post and you'll find that we do infact like other stuff.
Phip says: I listen to mostly chamber music (you know, those three piece quartets) and rap, I can't get enough rap! And showtunes too. LOL
hahaha Phip you're my hero :D
But I agree with both Phip and Carl on this... why are you so dissapointed that most members don't listen to the same stuff as you? We're all students of music and if we all liked the same thing we'd be boring!

HELL YES :D

lmao. I pretty much agree with AlexB. I myself like stuff from the 60's to the current. And I like Johnny Cash whom was biggest in the 50's. Current stuff though very rarely produces anything good though. For current I can dig the new Megadeth, Alice In Chains, and for a band that was formed in the 00's Protest the Hero. And most people your age DO like all those "core" bands. And most people who have a mind that opens a bit wider than Suicide Silence, Lamb of God, and Slipknot do not like the "core" bands. There is a reason for that, but I already know how bad I'll get bashed if I post it. Take a wild guess...

Ozz, you are very intuitive and I like that. I'm in the same boat, I don't care for the screamo bs that is called 'metal', I've always called it screamo. My drummer loves slipknot and all that 'core' stuff too, whereas I am more in the 80's and before type of music. Not to bash on the music genre(core), they are making music in a studio and being paid millions for record sales, to which I am not, I just prefer to not listen to that type of stuff. I like to hear more singing, like Journey, or hell, Pat Benatar :) over the 'screaming' type of stuff which doesn't really mean you hit notes(or at least to my ears). I have taken a liking to more indie rock stuff from today(though they may sound generic sometimes) merely because the more rocking stuff now sounds pretty much the same to me, guitar tone and all.
in short: I don't particularly enjoy metal(with a few exceptions), the heaviest I usually go is hard heavy rock n' roll(think Ozzy).
My two cents |

think about it Josh....
I listen almost everykind of music. Through classical to metalcore through Hardrock to Japanese court music... ofcourse there are genres that I dont listen much like some Britney spears alikestuff, but I cant even count the different genres I like to listen every week.
Some genres I like more, some genres less... but heck, its not matter, because every song is an invidual work of art. no matter what genre it is...if you know what I mean...
so what genre Im listening Josh? In here are many people that enjoy similar music genres, but what is common for people here... almost everybody is open for every type of music. That is an fortune my friend.
Why people should walk on narrow path just looking at the things on their feet, because there is an vast wonderworld around? Yeah, bonds. Invisible chains that binds a soul to not flee to feel all different kind of things... learn my friend, and you will find, that after that you can get much more off your favorite genre of music.
Cheers!

haha I like all types of music to tell you the truth, its just that I happen to dislike certain bands or groups.
Most genres will have one artist that is respectable. After all, it is human expression and we can relate to many types of music.
My favorite sub-genre of metal's golden age happened to exist in the 80's. So I may be one of those people you speak aboot. However, I enjoy other types of music as well.
That aside, throw any music my way and I'll try to digest it with pleasure, especially if it has guitar solos, I do discriminate heavily on that aspect, lolz. |

It's sometimes not common to like certain generes Josh. I mean, I have a feeling I could well be the only teenager in my town (if not in the whole country) who listens to american and some irish country and jazz/blues. Sure, there are times when I talk to an older person I discover they like Jazz and Blues too, but I never get to meet a live perosn here who also likes country. Not one. Just some people I've met online. But I think that adds up to why I like it, I never have to worry about hearing good songs on a loop on the radio or anywhere else until I end up hating them.
Of course I am open minded and listen to whatever moves me, but I think it's great that everyone typically likes different generes. I mean, could you imagine meeting loads of people who only listened to the same thing? It wouldn't take long for it to drive me insane! |

i think his point was that he was surprised that he didn't find more people who dug the same bands he dug. i mean yeah 'im trying to learn the guitar and i'm obviously going to try to emulate my favorite guitarists regardless of what other people listen to, but it would be weird if you liked x and you couldnt' find anyone else who liked x |
