Well, before I joined I wasn't really interested in school. I was focusing on my music stuff. I did take a couple basic programming classes while I was in college, but it was mostly visual basic/studio and html stuff.
As far as what inspired me to join the army; it was kind of a spontaneous decision. I was working two jobs and going to school. I wasn't making a whole lot of money - I could barely pay my bills - and school wasn't really driving me. A couple buddies of mine had joined the Marine corps and another joined the army. All said they didn't regret their decision. So I went first to a Marine recruiter, but when I asked him about job opportunities, all I got back was, "I can make you a United States Marine! Hoorah!". Yea... needless to say, that didn't entice me one bit. So I went to the army recruiter office. Basically a cool job offer to go along with a nice signing bonus and I was sold... Quite literally hehe.
I don't regret the decision one bit. I love my job, I got to travel to Germany where I met an awesome girl, I'm in Iraq, I've learned a whole lot of cool and useful information and I met some good friends. While I wouldn't really push anyone to join the military, I will say that any military you join will be a huge learning experience.

I do calculations to estimate the dose received to the public and to employees in the event of an accident. I also calculate doses with various types of shielding used for when various activities need to be performed in the plant. It's actually incredibly boring. lol We must abide by regulations dictated by the regulating body, which is to be expected, but it limits an engineer's creativity. :-) I expect to do something different in the future, but stay with my company as I think it is an excellent company and they promote moving around within the company, so long as we are obviously qualified.
I'm still in my last year of high school, but i just got accepted to the U of C, and i'm planning on majoring in biomedical sciences. Ideally, i'd go to med school, but we'll see. I haven't really ever entertained any other career. so lets hope that works out...

Thanks Jazz! Wow I'm amazed you got back everyone like that. I could only imagine the amount of karma you'd have by now if this was one of thoses forums where you could give karma to someone more than once. It look slike you're actually the one encourageing people on here :P I've got my eye on a AS level sports and science course now. I think I'll wait until I at least get some of my AM qualifications from this past year before I join it I think. And I'm seeing that modeling agency next weekend so I'll see how that goes.

That's a fine career path, and a lot of good possibilities even with this credit crunch. There's a lot of math required for both fields - I'd suck at it! haha. Work hard my friend; it'll pay of in the end :)

There is a HUGE difference between CS majors and CpE majors (at least at most schools).
If you want to do software design, GUI applications, front-end programming, and a lot of math/theory of algorithms, take Computer Science. This includes AI, Software design, Game Theory, etc.
If you want to do hardware design, embedded systems, microprocessor design, and low-level programming (assembly, hdl, etc.) as well as an introduction to Electrical Engineering, be a CpE. This includes Computer Networks, Electronic design, robotics, etc.
Don't make the mistake of thinking the are the same. Of course, some of the things you can do in one is also done in the other, but they have a completely different focus.
Thanks for the input, man. Yes, you're right, they're quite different but the thing is it's not the same things that they have to offer in all universities. I'll probably going to the local University (of Prishtina) so I have to see what they have and don't have and than make up my mind. I'm between those two.

i meant to say jack lemmon btw, not "paul lemmon" who, if such a person exists, did not star in any hollywood movies. for some reason i combined paul newman and jack lemmon into one single, totally awesome actor. the movie was also before my time, but they played it on a movie channel a lot.
the three mile island incident was an "accident" don't get me wrong, i just think that the public has a very skewed view on nuclear energy and in all seroiusness, the 3MI incident is an example of everything with nuclear power going RIGHT, not WRONG. both the incidents at 3MI and chernobyl were caused to improper operation of the reactor, except chernobyl did not have the same safety provisions built in that the 3MI plant had. in one case, a disasterous amount of radioactive material was released. in the other case, the automatic fail-safes activated and prevented any real harm to the ecosystem.
i think it's stupid that the US hasn't converted over to nuclear power, but on the other hand i work for a company who designs components for natural gas power plants. so as long as nuclear power is prohibitively expensive (thanks to beaurocracy and red tape), people will turn to CCNG plants and i will be employed. yay!

Yeah gx, I agree with you there for sure. You can take it a step further though for Chernobyl. Not only did they not have passive safety systems in place at the plant, but the management there was notified of the dangers of the testing they were doing and proceeded anyways. It was more than not having safety systems, it was a blatant disrespect for safety altogether. Pretty disgusting if you ask me.

I still have a year left to choose my career. I want to study in europe, maybe in france or england. good thing is im getting my spanish nationality in a year so i can get a job in europe. Ive been thinking, im gonna really try it hard with my actual band, weve already won a best song award in a contest, so i really see future in it. Im puttin lotso of effort, see if we can get a record in a year or two, and if we get signed, i might take a sabatic year before moving on to europe. All ive ever seen or worked in my life the last sector of a company, selling the product, or being the one in touch with the people. I think forward to having my own company in maybe 10 or 15 years, and an enterpreneur related career would really help me out. But all the managing careers i think they are just tools that you can get to know without studying them officially. So i want to study something that has to do with sciences, something that you cant do if you dont study it, like maybe chemistry or some engineering. the problem is that all the people i know that have money are owners of their own company, maybe a little company, but still it. So i dont really know how could i get money from studying a science without being a teacher.
