Who is your favorite guitar player of all time?

I would have to say Gary Rossington from Lynyrd Skynyrd. They are my favorite band and Rossington is an awesome guitarist with a very laid back approach to the guitar.

hhhhmmm....hard to say. but i can name a few....Steve Vai, Dimebag Darrell, Eddie Van Halen, Dave Mustaine and John Sykes.

Albert Collins...the master of the telecaster...The iceman!!!

He have a very cool approach to the blues. His attack to the leads were great, he was not afraid of experimenting, and his tone was unmatched. He was also a great songwriter. one of the greats!

Eddie Van Halen is one of my favorites also. I don't know if you read guitar world magazine, but they had a good interview with him and his son Wolf in this months issue.

I do read the magazine...but my subscription ended in december and i havent picked one up since...i think the magazine has gone down hill...its rare to see a worth while article in there anymore :(

When you say the greatest player of all time, are you being genre specific or are you talking about the best all rounder?

Apologies. I misread the question. Favorites being, of cause, a matter of personal choice.

My favorite player must be Michael Hedges or Chet Atkins. They really paved the road for the music I listen to today. They are a huge influence on so many people, and myself, that I don't think there could be any other wya of putting it.

My vote = Michael Hedges.

As I've moved through the years, my taste in music has changed quite a bit. My first recollections are like, late 50's early 60's when (as a child of about 6-7 I wanted to play like Eddie Cochrane and Bert Weedon.Then E.C came along and blew everyone away. Then Beck,Paige Blackmore and Hendrix. All taking guitarmanship to new heights. I think that anyones favourite guitarist is going to be the one that, not only inspires you the most over the most number of years, but also the one you most enjoy listening to, which is not necessarily the same thing.
I consider myself really lucky 'cause the one who inspired me the most is also the one I love listening to the most and, the icing on the cake, he's been 'doing his thing' for nearly 50 years now, and thats Richie Blackmore. Electric or acoustic, he's the guvnor as far as I'm concerned!

I don't have a favorite guitarist. I listen to lots of different guitarists and other instrumentalists and try to incorporate their playing styles into my own playing.

Beethoven

Tom Morello for most of my lead style stuff, James Hetfield for Rhythm. Chris Profit & Jeff Nelson are also a pretty strong influence to me at the moment as I'm learning a few of there band's songs.

Some of the local boys around my parts are Slipknot, Index Case, 39 parallel. not sure if they are any good but i thought i would trow it out becuase it has nothig to do with this forum.

i like james taylor, like the sound, nice soft easy going music behind a gr8 voice, but u cant consider them the best when u have slash and joe satriani and srv, and jimmy page. but thts my opinion

I can see what you are saying but I don't think slash could sell out night after night with just a him and his guitar. While James Dave and Paul could stand and play all night long to packed houses. Lead guitarists are very talented but most need a band to fill out the sound. But that's why there is always an acoustic room in guitar shops. We scare easily.

prob not but they play diff kinds of music. u dont need a band 4 campfire music but 4 rock ye. also its ur fav guitar player not the best. my fav or the charicteristics of my fav has 2 be som 1 who can play clean fast with emotion, and feeling, if u can play like tht ur my fav

Mattias IA Eklundh is brilliant. Other than that, I like the obvious guitarists (Hendrix, Page, Clapton). Oh, and I like some Wes Montgomery stuff (mainly off the album The Incredible Jazz Guitar).

ive got to agree with telecrater on Albert Collins. you dont see his name pop up often, but he was absolutely amazing and produced i sound that has gone unduplicated.

Onya mattmurray for voting Tommy Emmanuel. Have a look on Youtube for Andrew White. Sensational (Fingering Style) guitar playing. Rodrigo and Gabriella. Their version of Stairway to Heaven has to be seen to be believed. Paul Kelly for combining guitar with story telling. Ben Harper, Jack Johnson for his cruzy attitude. Ian Moss of Cold Chisel

As for a second, but close first, Stevie Ray Vaughan... He did the Blues rock thing with so much soul, my speakers bleed every time I crank him up, which reminds me, I need to replace those damn speakers again!

Some of his songs really SUCK, but he has a few that I like.

can't really say i have a favorite because of the variety of music i listen too.
just a few off the top of my head are Eddie V.H,Stevie ray,Eric Johnson,Zakk W,Aungus Y,Steve Vai,Randy Rhodes and don't hate me for this one but Joe Perry. i only have him there for influencial purposes
because i lived 3 blocks from Aerosmith's Studio throughout my entire childhood.

My favorites would be Ritchie Blackmore for Rock
Stevie Ray Vaughan for Blues
But everyone knows Jimi was the Best i hope!!!!
