Gosh, rest in piece Les Paul. And thank you for starting some great guitars. At least he had a good long life, that I feel good about.

came w/in 15 minutes (NYC) of meeting this great man (my label-head knew him) in person... i hate those 15 minutes now more than ever!
few realize fully what Les, an ass though he could be, contributed to what we now, as guitarists, take for granted each time we pick the plank up.
Les freaking RAWK!-ed

his legendary 'one-ups' w/ Chet are the stuff of legend!

that thang that feels better than sex wjen ya spank it right?, well ole Les INVENTED it!

Les (look at old stock footage) may have been the first 'shredder'(though to pigeon-hole a man beyond man would be sacramental at best)

God i will miss this great man .. but he lives forever in that well worn spot on the neck of that old LP Standard .. it's a gold-top, much like Les's legacy

this is a moment in time worth the merit of musical inclusion and forgiveness/praise

we have only lost the MAN, as long as we speak his name, play his planks, and aspire to his genious , he LIVES.

Every time you pick up your guitar from now on try to do thease things...i will (and failing is but a try in the past)

Think about Les, and Leo
Think about what these men gave us
and the greats that elevated these instruments we cherish as kin
Page, Jimi, and all owe everything to these men yet pay US
so pay BACK
study harder
look higher
reach
and
listen ....and PLAY

thats what ole Les would want, God bless him.

another gone. sad , yet enviable; I'll miss you Mr Paul may you rest in RAWK! was gonna say 'peace', like folks always do , but figured you'd like to shake 'em on down instead.

there is a hole in the world where you should be, Les....

@ Carl
That was so well said! And damn true! I'm definitely pushing myself harder out of respect for this legend.

He'll be greatly missed. But I'm so pleased he's lived this long! RIP.

Les Paul lead a good long life, not only was an innovator as far a guitars go he also lead the way in recording, and should be credited as being the inverter of the 4 recording.

Are there any other guitarists who both designed and played their own guitars other than Les Paul and Brian May? I can't think of any more off the top of my head. I'm not talking people who have adapted existing guitars to their own requirements, I mean designed from the ground up.

He is talking more about people who built there own guitars.

like Les Paul with his log guitar(he didn't make the Gibson les paul just suggested a few things) and brain may with his red thingy(I'm guessing "red special") that he and his father made out of fire place mantle.
and to answer your question a lot of older players did due to money issues and just availability (no chain stores like Guitar center back in 1930s just small mom and pop places in the city). I can't think of any names but i remember reading that a lot did or to start off with any way.
