a 3 peice band best for.....i either want to do a 2 lead and a drummer or a rhythm lead and drummer.....maybe even rhythm and/or lead/singer and drummer

Don't try to play a certain way. Just play. Let the pieces fall where they may, and just act naturally. We spend so much time trying to be perfect and what we're told we're supposed to be that we can barely ever evolve and be who we are.

Sorry for getting philosophical and **, I'm in a mood. But seriously, don't pigeonhole yourself. Just play and see how the music will mesh.

Where's da bass?! I used to have a band (Called Berserker ha!) we were 3,Drums,Bass and guitar,and we rocked everywhere,instrumental neo prog rock.

Yeah, bass is crucial, but loads of musical styles can be played. I have seen 3-piece rock bands and also trios playing some jazz, just play whatever you enjoy playing man!

If you got someone on keys, you could cover the bass >.<

I think what Jeff is saying is that you could use the keys to play a lot of root notes and be the bottom layer of the music while the guitar plays melodies and/or chords. Could be vice versa too, really. I think the point is that you could still get that fullness in the music.

If you do get keys/guitar/drums or bass/guitar/drums I'd say do what you want. latin blues, prog rock, classic rock. You can do almost anything with 3 foundational instruments. I'd be pushing towards prog rock though. Just because of Rush.

@op if you set it up like that I could see jazzy or other progressive type things working out. In a rock context you run the risk of the bottom dropping out as one guitarist would really have to be picking up the slack but highly do able. I'm cynical in that i doubt really any modern rock guitarist has the chops to do it but still do able. the lead, lead wouldn't work; however, as it would have to function in a lead Melody and figure bass type thing and rock doesn't work that way. it(rock) needs a really solid simple grove.

@bass topic- you really don't need a base guitar (double bass) as it is in the contra bass level. the Guitar it self goes well into the bass level, that it is more then adequate. many classical piano pieces don't even play a contra note. or take a string quartet the cello's lowest note is C2 the end of the contra (the guitar is just a major 3rd up E2). what you need is arrangement and orchestration knowledge. That being said rock generally needs the contra but that's part of it's orchestration but can easily be arrange out. How would solo guitar work if it couldn't????

Being someone who has played bass in bands i think it's really important to have a bass player but find the right one.

The black keys and White Stripes have done pretty well with out a bass player. I've always thought the doors sounded wimpy and flimsy and too damn trebily because of the lack of bass.

but don't think too much about it, just get your jams going stuff will either fall into place or fall apart.

the reason i said no bass is because i wanted to go for either a neo/classical metal duet or a jazz band. for jazz i would rather have a bass than a rhythm though.

and the reason i asked is because i can only find a drummer and a rhythm guitarist and i want to get the "fullest" sound with a small amount of people....i can adapt to any stlye of music if i have to....it will only make me better

A highschool friend asked me last week if would sit in with his band at a 3 hr rehearsal this past Saturday. Bass, two guitars, and a drummer. My friend is a smoker and would leave the room every half hour or so. We sounded so much better with just one guitar. The drummer and i would play songs that he and I knew but without any bass it sounded weak. I think the minimum is Bass, Guitar, Drums.

i've fallen in love with a local band called sleepy kitty. the entire band is 1. guitar/keyboard+vocals and 2. drums+backup vocals. they get an insane amount of sound out of just those two members. their music breaks down to i'd say 2/3rds guitar+drums 1/3rd piano+drums. their piano+drum songs are very reminsicent of the dresden dolls (amanda palmer on keys + brian what'shisface on drums), but their guitar songs are surprisingly loud and full toned, considering the lack of a bass guitar. it feels like there is nothing missing.

granted she probably knows what she's doing with the guitar. if you don't know what you're doing (i don't know what i'm doing) then your results might not be as successful.

There are a lot off bands that don't use a bass and it's appropriate. However, Venom is speaking of a neo-classical metal or jazz band with full sound. Metal and jazz guitar is full of mids. Without a bass behind it this kind of music sounds flat.
