i like standard. But tabs are findable on the internet and free.
Unless theres a website like ultimate guitar or songster that has standard that i dont know about. |

Tab but only because I can't read standard. If I could I would possibly never use tab again. Since most tabs are not 100% correct I rely a lot on the ears. |

I find it odd how people always say this, but notation is all done by ear too. |

Notation has the timing. Like how long to play the notes. |

Tabs and standard are both set by ear, so if a tab Can be wrong, then standard can be wrong too...
I prefer tab, because I just need a quick glance to pick up on where I left off if I get lost. With standard you need to read the note, find them on the neck, and decide which string to play on. |

I'm trying to learn standard notation because unless you play a fretted stringed instrument tabs mean nothing. i actually think using tabs too much can be detrimental to developing good musical practice in the sense that it forces you to think of fret numbers before note names which muddies the water when your trying to explain a melody to another musician.
Also I just want to say that 1000 posts in less than a year is ridiculous, can you honestly tell me that each one of those was a pertinent question or a relevant comment? |

@BBT You are correct. I should have explained more why I gave that answer. I DO USE TAB but if I could read standard I would use it since standard has more info (rest, note values..etc). Tab is just numbers on a line no feel for the passage being played. That's why I rely on the ears. For ME tab and standard do nothing without ME first hearing the song to get the rhythm, melody, leads and everything else in my head to have the ability to play it correctly. The licks section on this site would be much better if all licks would include a sound file. Without it I have no idea how the lick is to be played,it's just numbers on lines.
I use tab when I find a piece that's above my playing level. But relying on tab alone would leave me lost. As far as tab not being 100% correct, that sounds stronger than I intended. Most of a single tab will be right but you may find just a few notes that are off. That's when the ears kick in to identify the wrong notes.
This is just my feelings on the subject. |

@ Harley, so true man! Because tabs are numbers it becomes even more difficult for that learner to understand theory. They have such a hard time trying to understand the complete basics like What notes go into a certain key, scale or even a chord! That's exactly why notation is soooo important. And people who are learning tabs are completely and utterly limited!
As for the 1000th post thing, most of my posts weren't exactly necessary, or educational, too. We become a family on here, so talking about random crap is occasionally nice! :)
I'm a 100% notation fan! :) |

Exactly! Can you sight read fluently Coleman?
It's hard work when you're self taught, but sooo damn important.
Most of the books I have are in notation, so I forced myself to learn it. Hard stuff - I could play to an averaged tempo piece, but not as fluently on a fast piece as I would like to. (I'm only human!) |

People who preffer tabs usually arent good at sight reading notation. But the big plus about tabs is that they are findable on the internet while notation is not. |

Tab all the way. I have to think when I look at standard notation. And I dont like to think when I play. It makes me sound like a noob. |

I have used tab long enough now that standard notation has become unusable for me. I never had the time or a real desire to learn notation. However, if it got in the way of me being personally successful as a musician, I would have taken the time. And no, I am not limited because I can't read notation. There are plenty of successful blind musicians who can't read either.
Also, gshredder2112 keeps this forum lively and fun to be a part of. I like his questions and thoughts AND he always has POSOTIVE things to say. So what if he says them a lot! |

@ jazzy
You wrote on some post about the English language. I wanted to share a story I find amusing with you (and the site). It may be a common expression in the UK, I am not sure, but it was hilarious to me nevertheless. A good friend of mine, from Derbyshire, once told me that I speak a ***ized version of English called American. I am not sure why that was so funny to me, but it still makes me laugh to this day. :o) |

it depends on how fast the piece is and how complex rhythmically and harmonically it is. but i can read pretty simple stuff fluently, it still takes me a min or so to figure out most real book tunes. |

i can actually site read better on piano. although im not much of a pianist, its just the way the notes are laid out simpler than a fretboard. |

Strangely enough I can play guitar better than I can on piano! I see the positions better on guitar. o.O
BTimm - haha! I know dude, I have some cousins who are American, and he came over here and said something about a story then said "That's because we speak American." I died of laughter :) The language is called English - but even in England there are multiple variations of how you say certain things!
"ain't that true" = "init"
"that's great" = "that's sick!"
"I thought you held a good fight" = "I fout you beefed 'im up well good blad"
:)

I liked what jazz said, by were kinda like a family here.....and I put some stupid things up and I'm still here, I guess I'm like the stupid cousin sometimes....lol but at least I dont try and be something I not and I dont think Shred does either so......I think if you want to post something that seems important to you then go ahead.....who are we to judge anyone, and I say Tabs all the way, but notation is the best, I wish I would have taken the time to learn notation, but getting old and senile like phip(lol)(jokin buddie), I would forget what I learned anyway. |
