Well I had to think twice, but I thought about it and thought I'd prefer if someone who dislikes it says they like me playing it. It'd feel good to know you were good enough for someone like that tobe capeable of likeing it when you play. |

Well, with the way you phrased it: I would rather have a masterful guitarist say that I'm good at guitar.
I would rather someone who dislikes guitar music to say they like my music. |

I'd just say all points are good. Personally I'd like either one to happen. |

Honestly speaking same to me, if one who dislike guitarmusic but like my guitar playing, its done its job to listener. Im pleased if even one fellow likes the song or playing.
Also its possible, that good guitarist points the technical ability and dislikes it, but one who dont like guitar music, but like music very much likes your theme, "touch" or "soul" and so on... its quite line drawn on water...

yeah i suppose i didnt phrase it too well, thats what i get for posting first thing in the morning!
Me, not being a "shredder" I dont really care that much about technical skill. Altho i feel really good when my guitar teacher says i do a good job on something, i think its more satisfying to reach someone who generally doesnt enjoy the instrument or the music. |

Someone who dislikes guitar music obviously won't know what's good and what isn't - come on guys! You should know that the master is the greater reward because it's what you're trying to achieve, right?
I'm with Jeff on this one. |

But all the 'master' guitarists who've told me I've played good was honestly said half-heartedly by them. They don't always really truely mean it when they tell me, and I'm aware of that. I've always felt awesome when someone who hated guitar would tell me whatever I was doing sounded nice.
Also, does it not feel more rewarding to feel like you've influenced and altered someone's opinion on guitar? Someone who hated would be more likely to appreciate hearing you play. Also something to encourage you to keep playing, even if like me, you're a pretty ammatuar guitarist. A skilled guitarist would be less likely to remember your playing and really think it was powerful, which making the listner feel that impact is what being a musician is all about in my opinion. |

I like Heather's honesty on this one.
When master guitarists tell you they think you're good at it mostly they don't really mean it, but when somebody who doesn't like guitar (NOT someone that doesn't know anything about guitar but somebody that just doesn't like it) tell you you're good, it means that you've influenced them (Heather's words) and made them give it another thought. BUT, they obviously don't know much about music, so the question arises: how much is their opinion worth?
I'd sure like Jimmy Page to tell me I'm good if he meant it but I like Jimmy Page because of his musical abilities, not his technical skills. So, since MANY (not all) Pros would rather look at your technical skills and the rest would give a good listen to the actual MUSIC I think it's hard to decide.
That's why I've quit asking people for their opinions about the way I play guitar. Some people just like to play very fast and to see others doing the same thing. Some don't care about the technical part, they just want the music in it so it's obviously up to the taste and since nobody's taste on guitar playing is the same with the taste of anybody else (including me) I just decide myself if I'm good at it or not. I sure have a taste on music, be it "good" or "bad" and I have a picture of what I would like to play so if I achieve on getting out the sound that satisfies me I'm surely better than I was before I did that. I call it MY STYLE. :P
There you go.
Oh, and I respect YOU answers and opinions, this is just MY point of view on the whole thing. |

I don't mean to be rude guys, but who exactly are you two considering masters?
Your highschool teachers, or your true "on screen" inspirations? Because I'm pretty sure they'd be honest with you. Also, we wouldn't have a chance to find out what they think until we're good enough anyway...
In reality - it's down to ourselves to decide what's good and what's not. I'm personally making music for myself - if I like it, that's all that matters. Sure it's nice to hear other people saying they really enjoyed your music, but their kindness won't exactly get you anywhere. If you keep telling yourself what's realistically good and what you need to improve on; then surely that's all you need to push forward? |

If anybody says I'm good, I take the complement and immediately think it to be not true. That way I push forward to always try to better myself in every way possible(technical ability, timing, etc., you know every way possible? lol)
To me it doesn't matter so much Who says I'm good(other experienced musician, guitarist, regular kid my age, whatever), I take the complement and forget it pretty quickly just to keep moving forward and not let myself get a "big head" and stop thinking that I need to better. Since I want to be better no matter what ;)
Just my 2 cents on which is better, I'm neutral because of: see above.

I always feel better when my grandmother tells me I'm doing good...
*shrugs*
I agree with Mici and JazzMaverick, though. I get enough encouragement when I learn a song by ear and nail the chords all on my own. I don't play for anyone but my wife anyway, and she calls me her "Personal Guitar Hero".
Good enough for me. |

Non taken, Jazzy. :P Hahahah! Kiddin'.
I have so much to say about this because I've been thinking about it a lot lately so I don't know if I'll be able to write it all here.

I said "When master guitarists tell you they think you're good at it mostly they don't really mean it" and I meant people who are really good at it but not necessarily masters, so yes, calling them 'masters' was a bit too much but just to fit the question. If I was so good that my true on-screen inspirations would listen to me, I'd probably be so good that I wouldn't really worry about my skill (I'm sure Jimmy Page doesn't listen to Thee Jonas Brothers)

And THAT my dear is what I meant. (LOL. I always wanted to say 'my dear' to somebody in that way. :P Sorry if it sounds rude.)
I wrote a lot of non-sense so it's probably very normal you thought I meant something else (and I only SUPPOSE you did).
I was kinda trying to tell how I did care a little about both but not VERY MUCH for either of them but I guess I got lost on the way. |
