other bands
Foals
Sufjan Stevens-genius...
Iron and Wine- the album Shepard's Dog blew my mind
Dr.Dog
The Dodos - a drummer and acoustic guitarist. I dig how the drummer plays some really heavy beats over the acoustic. The Lyrics are really good too.
Andrew Bird
Arcade Fire- Epic,This performance inspires me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jq6M4PWKvq4
Band of Horses
Manchester Orchestra
These United States -http://www.myspace.com/theseunited

Conor Oberst and The Mystic Valley Band - the self titled album is great stuff.
Fleet Foxes - amazing vocal harmonies.
Rodrigo y Gabriela, two crazy mexicans playing acoustic music with crazy techniques and percussion on the guitars! Metal Flamenco rock funk alternative and so on! ^_^
@ neildo
I saw Fleet Foxes on SNL a few months ago. I liked them. I usually don't listen to the bands they have on there, but they caught my attention. Very different.
wow this is one of those posts that just keeps on giving, keep em coming guys and gals.
while I'm here I'd like to invite you all to listen to my band The Sonotists (experimental hard rock, i think) the guitarist kicks ass (I'm not the guitarist :( i do the vocals). recently got the websites set up :
oh ' The Dead Weather' Jack White from the white stripes the singer from The Kills a guitarist from the Queens of the Stone-age and the bassist from The Raconteurs
its funny that i just read the 10 posts above mine and all my bands are mentioned... after some thinking..
30 seconds later
3 bands I think would not be on this whole list
1. gregory and the hawk ... have not listened to them in like 4 years and that was before they even had a release but I think the e.p. I had was called boats and birds... just 5-6 amazing songs
2. lulu berilium ... dont even know if she releases anything but I know her personally (or did about 5 years ago and she is **ing amazing... just toys, piano guitar and a tape recorder really and she made amazing stuff (I have a feeling you should be able to find a few things online...
3. bind man's colour PLEASE CHECK THIS BAND OUT ... just got signed to a friends label. 2 19 year old kids that are making music like animal collective with mostly guitars.... really just **ing will blow your mind..
sorta metal: a day to remember, the fall of troy, killswitch engage, escape the fate
indie rock: barcelona, vampire weekend, as tall as lions, the shins
rock: the mars volta
awesome screamo: bring me the horizon, emery, parkway drive.
to name a few. check em out :O
most of em are progressive metal types of bands. if you look at any I highly suggest animals as leaders and the /iambulb! Any guitarist would appreciate it I think
most of this is copied and pasted from something i just wrote in the "favorite solos" thread. but it is also a band that nobody has heard of, but they should.
okay so a few years ago i was watching the MTV europe music video awards on MHD (now called palladia). i don't remember when but it was the year they were hosted in copenhagen. i saw a 15 second clip from a song and thought "man, that is awesome, i have to check them out". the band is called "kashmir" and i fell instantly in love with them. from what i can gather, they are HUGE in their native denmark. i mean like coldplay huge. but i cannot find any recognition of their music in the states. none of their albums have been printed in the states (you can get an import off of amazon for upwards of $30), although i think their newest at least is available on itunes.
from the grunge rock (i've heard some of it but can't find any albums online) they sort of progressed into this OK Computer-meets-Kid A radiohead bliss. it's a mix of eclectic, odd timed rythyms, synthesizers, and folksy guitar songs.
i highly recommend checking out "zitilites". also "no balance palace" and "trespassers" (which came out this year). before zitilites they were still a little grungier, sort of how like when you compare pre-OK computer radiohead to post-OK computer radiohead. if i was going to try to get you to like radiohead, i'm not going to recommend you listen to pablo honey first. but PH and the bends are also both excellent albums...
"surfing the warm indusrty" off Zitilites
"the curse of being a girl" off No Balance Palace (one of my all time favorite videos. i watched it 4-5 times before i realized what was going on.)
"pursuit of misery" off Trespassers (i wish i knew danish, judging from the audience laughter the lead singer is quite a cutup! don't worry though they sing in english)
the newest album isn't the greatest, kind of boring, but i am really digging that last song. it really reminds me of Absolution-era MUSE
passion pit are awesome. so are doves. metric is okay. the music is pretty good, but that chick has zero stage presence (try watching karen O perform live, then watch the chick from metric perform live and try not to get bored)
