what got you started playing guitar?
before i started playing guitar i was a guitar hero freak for about 2 years. i owned an acoustic, but i only used to do a bunch of bs acting like i can play....it was actually very boring and i would rather play the game. but then 1 day i was talking to my cousin about how honored some people(slash, tom morello, other ppl on gh3) must have felt to be asked to be on a game about guitars.....from then on i decided i wanted to be so good on real guitar that i would be asked to be featured on a gh game and i asked my father to teach me
thats not my motivation to play guitar anymore but it would still be cool. now i want to get in the top 10 list of the fastest guitarist in the world

My mom bought me Blizzard of Ozz and I listened to it for like 2 weeks straight. Randy's playing blew me away, and I told my parents I wanted to start playing guitar.

@emp: exactly! lol.
no I was bored one day and realized that I wasnt good at anything other than video games so I thought I'd try music. And when it came to choosing the instrument, my sister started guitar lessons in school so my mom got her one and she dropped the class and gave the guitar to me.
I had this friend...we were algaing competing against eachother to be better in everything,he was better @ school,i was a cooler guy,then he got a guitar,and i HAD to be better than him,so i got mine,the rest is history x)

When I was 10 my dad bought my first guitar. It was a cheap Yamaha classical git; cost $50. I didn't take it too seriously. But when I was 13 all my friends started playing guitar. So, naturally, I picked up playing bass. A few years later I picked up the git again.

Freshman year of college. Impulse buy. Made really good friends with this girl who played violin and she offered to help teach me guitar. Bought a used Epiphone and loved it.
From there, I saw a few videos of guys like Andy McKee, Don Ross, Michael Hedges, and Chet Atkins, and I just took off with fingerstyle music.
Bottom line, the only reason why I'm still here is because it's fun.

cool, jeff.
do you play classical music too? cuz thats the only time i use finger style but i really kinda suck at it so i just try to learn the "lead part" of classical songs. also, do you use your pinky??
the standard technique is to not use your pinky but there no rules against it and many techniques require it. The issue with it is that the pinky is small and requires a repositioning of the hand into less then Ideal positions especially in timbre terms. The most obvious and easily understood need, would be; what if a five voiced chord showed up, your going to be needing that pinky now wont you.
as for flamenco, they aggressively use all digits. plucking aside, any decent rasgueado technique requires it, and rasqueado is the corner stone of flamenco.
as for why I got started, just kind of happened. lame answer I know but I really don't know why I started ( i thought real hard about too) it just kind of ended up in my hand and I went with it.
