Well in the history books, evh is believed to have invented the two handed-tapping technique. In 1979 the public got its first exposure to two handed after the realease of Vh1.But it is believed that randy rhoades used this technique b4 vh during his time with queit riot, which was a band a few years before vanhalen. When vanhalen was first starting they played a few shows with quiet riot,so the accusation is that either randy picked up the technique from eddie during those shows,or that eddie picked up the technique from randy during those shows.I encourage more research into this subject, because you may be able to dig up more insight on the matter. But with the facts i have presented,Who do you think created it?
I've always seen Eddie do it more.
Plus he is the greatest of all time.
If he was the first to record and present it, I say he automatically gets credit.
The first rock guitarist that used that tehnique was probably Steve Hackett...but usage of tapping tehniques wasn't that uncommon among the flamenco and classical guitarists so it was probably used even before Roy Smeck did.
For example. Who was the first to play really low notes and really high notes on the piano and then decided they can play something in the middle using thier nose all at the same time.
EVH took it to a whole new level but Hendrix was doing this in the 60's. Ritche Blackmore and Steve Hackett did it too in the early 70's. But I think like others eluded to, it probably goes back to when people first started playing multi-stringed instruments.
