Should we have just one backing track? Or a bunch? Because none of us are similar in style - some are requesting jazz, some blues, and some more mellow stuff.

I personally vote to have number of backing tracks for you all.

What does it take to be a judge? I can offer my $0.02 as a judge if you like. I am not sure I have enough experience as far as guitar specifically, but I have some background and know what sounds good. :-D

I'll judge. I can't do backing tracks due to my lack of recording equipment and crap mic on my laptop.

I'm fairly neutral on backing tracks at this point, so it doesn't matter too much for what I'm given to work with as far as that goes.

I don't know if I would be a credible judge, so I'm going to just give my best on the competition side :)

I'll pass on judging then, since there seem to be enough people interested in judging who would do better than me. :-)

Hahhah, but if there's a less than one backing track...its really hard to be a judge XD. Well, anyway... heres my take.

*emp messing and jumping all around the house with airguitar*

allright, allright... I took my medicines...
with all this wait I think when someone do a backing, I have no idea how to play to it XD...

Cheers!

@ Empirism - dude you're a nutter! :D hahaha

@ Alex, you can't compete if you're going to be a judge.

Well, I personally don't think it'll be more of a challenge, but if you're all comfortable playing with just one track for all of you then go for it. :)

when i offered a back-track i was semi-serious, was gonna shoot out an old hunk of score that didn't make it to the show it was aimed at, and now, thinking again, i DO actually have a non-Snarky opinion(if you'll forgive my earlier uber-snark)

my idea?
-no back tracks
-no covers
just the participants in this "competition" playing the guitar. period.

that way Creativity comes more to the forefront, imnsho, and each 'competitor' will have to rely solely on his/her un-aided skills.
i've heard a few of you play some pretty interesting stuff and would hate to see this turn into a "look how fast i am" type thang.

the thought came to me upon realizing that this is one big way i ascertain the improvement my students make weekly, monthly, yearly-etc etc...

does ___ have a good sense:
- of rhythm
- of chordal structures & voicing
- of melody and melody lines
- of improvisation
- of creativity
- of originality (not the same as creativity)
- of exploration and risk
- of basic technical ability
and so forth and so on.

this lead me to believe that any backing track not made by the 'competitor' his or herself would serve only as a hindrance to their OWN unique style...thus taking much of the room for personal creativity away.

I would also suggest that you all judge yourselves; as most of you are quite young in playing years and thus would be better served by a group-vote.

2-cents sans-snark(this time lol)

RAWK!

I actually really like Cs's idea, a lot actually. What if someone were to make a backing track/drum loop and share it, and someone were to do the same but with a different feel(like someone did a bluesy back track, someone did jazzy, someone did hard rock/metal, etc.)

OR

If people could say what they wanted to have for their backing track if they could not provide their own... then have a few different ones that users could choose from :D

Just a few thoughts ;)

Eh. Carl is still right. It could be a bluesy backing tack for instance, but being made by someone else would still take away from whoevers playing it's original feel. I mean, it's not a rhythm and lead whom are experienced with working together, so it'd be pretty weird feeling.

yeah, agreed...

In that case, I'll just use a drum track and do my own backing track :D
