So i was at the music store today, wearing my favorite nirvana t-shirt ,so i went to go try out one of them kerry king V's and these
guys started pointing and laughing at me,so i look at em and go What?
Then one guy says"shouldnt you be playing a mustang, thats a man's guitar you got right there".I said oh really, care to.play me something? I handed the guitar and he started playing Ac/dc and the crazy train riff, and he handed me the guitar with yhis look
on his face like he just played the most awsomest thing ever.
I turned it up.and started ripping through holdsworth and di meola
licks, with metal distortion, the looked at me, said nothing and walked away...

"If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough." - Albert Einstein

Boasters will always fall hard once they realise what they're up against.

You're a good player GShred, but what I just said also goes out to you. By all means feel good about yourself, because you should. But there is so much to learn in music that there is rarely enough time to credit yourself. No matter what we go through - or how much effort we all put in, (or how little to that guy you played against) there will always be someone better - that's the challenge we should happily accept and hopefully it'll be one of those targets that will help us all to improve.

Very insightful words jazzmaverick. I know i'll never
be the best in other peoples minds. But my
actions yesterday showed someone else that
lesson that obviously needed to be learned too.

Furthermore,it was for fun, just getting to show
off a bit, silence a heckler or two.You have to feel
confident in your abilities,or your audience will pick
up on it that your not,and shun you away. Not confidence
in a smug sort of way, just enough were you feel you can
do what need to do when you have too,and still
be humble.

gs2112: Good point about the confidence being telegraphed to the audience. I'd rather see someone soldier on, even if they are screwing up, than give up mid-song. I saw an opening act the other night, one person with their guitar, and I was feeling almost uncomfortable during certain parts where there was apparent low confidence.

this might sound a little weird but when i used to go to the music store when i first started playing i used to turn the amp up loud and play a bunch of bs....now my playing is more sophisticated and yet i keep the amp so low at music stores that i can barely hear myself....im gettin over it though....i keep the volume at 3 now :)

when people walk by while im playing ill turn away from the amp so they can look at me play though...does that count for anything?

When im practicing or playing,i never play loud,i find it obnoxious.
If im with drummer,i turn up all the way.But i prefer
a low volume,to hear my playing more accurately.

Thats because distortion has a natural tendency
to make things go sharp, thats why most metal.guitarists
tune down a half step.

I barely play at music stores anymore. The only time I go to play is when I actually have some sort of intent to buy... or a new guitar the store got catches my eye.

Other than that, I walk in to buy strings or a new capo or something... and that's even getting pretty slim since I'm starting to buy everything online cause it's cheaper.

@jeff do you go to musiciansfriend.com?, zzounds.com?, or is there something cheaper?

i go to music stores because my current guitar sucks and my level of playing is above what the guitar was made for...no excuse though....its still an ibanez....its still the best brand :)...still has a sick ass tone

I tend to do Amazon.com just cause I have a prime account so everything gets free 2-day shipping. Ends up being a lot nicer that way :)

I prefer to go to the music store, its fun!
you get to test out the new gadgets without
buying, and play guitars you couldnt normally afford.
Tell me how your gonna do that online? Though stuff
maybe cheaper online, its worth the extra $1 or so
to me to get to test out all the goodies,plus....
idont have to wait for the crap to get shipped to my house. xp

Since I already dropped a grand on a guitar and I don't have that kind of money lying around, I have no urge to go check out new gadgets and electronics. My setup is perfectly fine as is right now.

Though I would like to show off my guitar skills... at a shop is no place to do it. Save that for the stage.

You should probably keep in mind that wearing a Nirvana shirt will NEVER get you any "up front" cred with any guitarist anywhere XD

This has been bothering me since I read it yesterday. Being humble is good, (unlike the boastful kids on here :) but lots of us who would be considered terrible get up and do it. You don't feel like playing out yet...that's cool..but you are good enough to entertain people. We at AGC at certainly entertained by your playing.

If I had to be better than you are now to play in front of people, it might never happen.

@Jeff

dude, you are an amazing guitarist!
mix in the fact that when you play live, you may notice the mistakes, but nobody really will since they're usually going to be mesmerized :)

Do it! ...and tell us when you get signed haha

I should start doing that now.

For some reason, about 99% of Marines hate the Navy.
I practically live in retired Marineville, and EVERYTHING I own has a Navy Reference.
I don't know why it's such a big deal to them.

I'd MUCH rather piss off a little know-it-all guitar kid with a Dream Theatre t-shirt than an ex-marine who's killed men before. JUST sayin'. lol.

Good for you mate. Just don't get cocky.

The guys at the guitar centre I go to don't talk any $hit. Customers and Salesmen.
The salesmen have actually stood around me and watched me play. I've also had 4 customers (all at once) stand around and watch me play. Also, when in music stores. I don't wear any bands on my clothing. Cause the licks I'm playing tell what kind of music I like. ;)
