I quite dislike malmsteen, because i believe that he has a great potential, a great technique but he always destroys the whole sound of his playing by throwing in faaaar to many notes. If I had to choose, I would pick the second one. But also the second video wasnt overwhelming in most parts. I think that there was just the melody missing, like in most neoclassical shredding pieces. I dont want to flame or anything, but I just wanted to express my opinion on this ;)

I think malmsteen is such a great blues player sometimes, his licks are amazing but then he starts to go for the fancy playing again and it all starts to fade out.

Which one do you prefer?

i actually prefer al di meola bcuz he is my currrrent hero XD,but yngwie also has haf a huge influence on my playing,so i have a tremendous respect for him,and i wont abandon liking him just bcuz people.flame him

I have no clue who is more technically skilled. But malmsteen means nothing to me while al means a great deal.

I rather have yngwie :D

Actually, after listening to far beyond the sun a couple of time I'm starting to quite like the song. Album version is pretty cool. Thanks for sharing!

I tend to like Fusion Players over Neoclassical. There are two main reasons:

1. I prefer the tone of most fussion players over the Neoclassical

2. Fussion players tend to have better phasing.

yes,holdsworth does have killer phrasingg,but maestro tone is superb

I like both but given only one choice I would listen to fusion.

Well, since I haven't voted on any of the vids yet I say

I've never like Govan really. He bores me. I just feel like there's no emotion in his playing. Plus his tone is very generic. Honestly, I can't tell the difference between Guthrie Govan and John Petrucci.

So far jazz fusion is winning! IMO

@ DarkRiff, that's cool, you're entitled to your opinion and it's good that you have a reason to back up why you don't like his style. But in truth, there will probably be another musician like you out there saying similar things about your playing some day.

It's true, you can't please them all, but to even get to his stage of playing ability requires A LOT of dedication, blood, sweat & life opportunities passed by just to do what he's passionate about. There is far more emotion in his playing than you understand dude. Even though he's not your thing - imagine how amazing it would be just to play at his ability and have his knowledge? He passes through the guitar so quickly because it's second memory to him - that's amazing.

Yngwie, Al Di Meola, Shawn Lane, Cacophony and anyone else mentioned or ever to be mentioned have that exact same, brilliant, passion inside of them. That pure talent and ambition. But if we all had that similar emotion in our playing that you're thinking of - we'd all be boring, we'd all be the same. That's why variety is so important.

Yeah, I don't like people like Slash or bands like Iron Maiden, but I honestly do not recommend passing their knowledge by... even if we don't like them their talent contains a lot of useful information inside! I hope you will understand that some day dude :) It could help you to become an amazing musician one day.

I did not say I didn't respect his playing or knowledge of music. It's just not a style of playing that interests me.
Emotion can be expressed in many ways, I know that. But to me, when someone's playing is so "scheduled" (for lack of a better term), It seems like there is no emotion to me. (I like a wee bit of sloppyness in playing)
I guess I was a little harsh on the tone remark. A lot of people have a "generic" tone. Not just Govan
I know there is someone out there that plays like me. I've been told many times that I play almost exactly like Frank Zappa.
I respect all good players out there. But it doesn't necessarily mean I have to like their playing.

That's cool dude, I never said not to dislike anything :) Just thought I'd let you know that even though he's not amazing in your books, or others for that matter, you could benefit from their knowledge if you wanted. That's all. But disliking him is cool man. :)

aww man so hard to choose!!!

the neoclassical part of me loves the harmonic minor scales, chord progressions, the use of Maj, Min, and Dim arps. and the SPEED

the jazz part of me loves the "exotic" scales, the super crazy arpeggios, the killer chromatics, wholetones, and all the "weird stuff". jazz players are so clean and swift too.

these two styles combined is basically what makes V3N0M

When i started,I was a thrasher,so that helped develop my
speed alot.But then i got on this neoclassical kick,i was an
yngwie clone basically,until i discoved al di meola,the I
leaned toward a more fusion style of shredding.I dont play both of
those too much anymore,im more into a more classic jazz
style.of shredding(not fusion)But along the way i ventured into reggae,country,even techon,and flamenco.

But right now my main focus is 50's rock.and indian raga,which
is an extremely difficult genre,shredwise.

Not at the momentk....well actuall check the videos of your playing thread,
theres a recent one there,and some old jazz vid.

Here's another thread with a list of guitarists that I wouldn't put up against each other. Each one of these guys are different. They are all leaders in their class! I will say, however, that DiMeola is the first to alternate pick at blazing speeds on an electric guitar in the jazz fusion style. He was only 19 years old when he joined RTF in the early 70's.
