What makes metal?

what comes to Guns N Roses, how you can say that its Classic Rock, Hard Rock or Glam Metal because its all of that and also Included with Sleaze Rock... thing is that Guns N Roses, like many bands are mixtures of different genres...(alright, I know this is a bit vain, but if we have or speak of music genres, we have to be exact with them)

In Guns N Roses music there is also styles from Country if you listen songs You Ain't the First" and "Dead Horse" forexample... well also in Illusions albums their songs turned to more progressive also so again we can have new speculations what genre that is.

I can hear GNR as mixture of Sleaze rock and Glam metal that they are more close to Glam metal for me. Anyway... its music. Not that I like, but anyway... Cheers!

I would say they are hard rock with glam aesthetics.

Yes it can easily consider as hard rock. also roots of glam metal is in Hard Rock and Glam Rock so I think that is very close to it. All these can be found in GnR songs and stage presence thats why its pretty hard to "categorize" it to any "pure" genre or subgenre...

To me, Metals just an attitude...not caring bout how people see you, just wantin to have fun..
But i gotta agree with Ozzfan486...Slipknot is pop, marketed towards 13 year olds tryin to look badass...in my opinion anyways, its how i see alot of bands in that area...Ax&, Bullet etc...

leather jackets and jeans are metal, long hair ect.

Children of bodom is metal, but i would say that Metallica is metal aswell, but still these to bands are totally different because Children Of Bodom is melodic metal and Metallica is thrash and heavy metal.

So asking what metal are is hard to answer, however if you devide it into underbranches its kinda easy:

Metal:
Neo-classical metal
Melodic metal
Heavy metal
Power metal
Thrash metal
And this list will keep on going for a whilexD

Metal is the darker side of music more brutal with the guitar bass a type of music that helps a few let the rage out like the crowd of people fans

hmm, blues and jazz have very many subgenres aswell, i think even more than in metal if we include groove and soul and RnB and their subgenres to Blues and Jazz... anyway metal have many.

makes metal is how the artists play on stage , you listen to screamo you hear more than the screaming but a kind of rythm to it
