I understand Crunch but which one would you choose if it was the only guitar you would play for the rest of your life. I like Gibsons and think they are tonally superior to most Fenders but I couldnt imagine myself picking one up and start playing thrash or punk even. I think they are great for Hard rock, Jazz, and Blues. I know there are some cool Gibson shapes like the Flying V and Explorer but companies like Jackson, ESP, and Ibanez have made those guitars collectors items. |

LP: So you put the Gibson name above the quality of the instrument? |

One has to take evrything into consideration like tone, aesthetics, preice, quality, reputation, and comfort. When I bought my first guitar I actually wanted a Gibson LP but it was too expensive, and it was heavy. I also thoght the neck was too thick so I thought to myself " Damn I want a Gibson but maybe its just because my favorite musicians use Gibson. Maybe I'll get that Strat." I kind of got over the name. Although theres plenty thats in a name. I would definetely never hesitate to play an LP they are good guitars. |

@Doz: Not at all, out of all the guitars I have played I like my les paul the best. Gibson is a step up from an Epi les paul so in my personal preference I like a Gibson. I was just inputting my opinion to the topic. It may be different from everyone else but it's my opinion. |

LP: Oooh, it was because you said you didn't care if they were overpriced. If you don't actually think they're overpriced than that's fair enoug really, however, high end Epiphones have a reputation for being better than low end Gibsons - so it's not *always* a step up. |

Fender speaks electricity to me. Gibson speaks volume and deeper tone. You need both is you are doing more than one type of thing. Fenders are more versatile in that they're really cool for rhythm and fills. Gibson are great if you want to get a really nice creamy tone. If you want to scream, both will serve as that's a matter of effects and amplifier volume. A guy in my band has a 1957 re-issue Les Paul, among many other guitars and he can make i get this really nice creamy tone that a fender just cannot get. For some it depends on who you are and what you're doing. I want 'em all. As many good ones as I can get. |

Any guitar that feels comfortable will do. You can 'process' the sound you want. Clapton proved that in the Cream reunion. In the old days he was a Gibson man. His famous 'woman' tone was produced on Gibsons and their humbuckers. On the reunion he was using his famous 'Blackie' Strat (single coils)throughout the show, but he still retained the same tone!
edit:- And he wasn't using Marshall amps on the reunion either! |

I don't like either one, although I do like knock offs...
I have an Ibanez Prestige, love it, it has a great tone! And I can play it sitting easily.
Then I have a Griffion Lyon, crappy Beginners guitar, but it also has a great tone, and really high quality wood, it's actually a one piece, just one huge piece of wood... Once I changed the bridge to something that dosn't rust, by god it's awesome!
And then my pride and joy, a Jackson RR1, I love it so so much, although, I really need to get new pickups. They are okay, but very low bassy, you'd think that would be good, but I tune up and put my bass to 1 so ya... Hahahah
I really want a Esp V-500 though, or maybe one of the explorer types though, I was going to get one, but Instead they got me a Jackson... Not sure why but I love it none the less! |

Gibson! Fender has too much of a country twang but I like the neck on a fender better. Just depends on the music you play and your style I guess. |

Me either but I have heard both played and fender just has too much country twang. Now a Fender with a Humbucker in the bridge would be interesting especially if the pickup was an EMG 81. Wonder what that would sound like. |

Jim Root Telecaster
In fact, Fenders with Humbuckers are not that hard to find anymore. Check out "Fat Strats" or maybe a '72 Telecaster. Actually, just look around on Musicians Friend or any other guitar store site, you'll find plenty. |

I have played a Aria Pro two. It looked identical to a fender strat and had a humbucker in the bridge(cheapy), but I was just wondering about slapping an EMG 81 in it or perhaps a Dimebucker. |

You could get HSS Strat (which is not "so black" :D), and change the bridge pickup to an EMG.
Actually, I believe most modern strats have room for a humbucker in the bridge, but the pickguard only fits a single coil. You could swap out the pickguard for one that would fit and EMG in it.
EDIT: @Skold, I don't like the look of the Jim Root Tele much either. |

Bullshit. The Beatles, Johnny Cash, Oasis, etc. > Speed Metal.
Note: I am not doubting the musicians who play metal. I simply do not like it, and do not see it as a form of music that I can listen to. |

I had an American strat with an HH pickup configuration and 'splitter' switch so that, at least theoretically, I had the best of both worlds. It still had the clean strat sound but it never quite got that 'filthy' Gibson humbucker sound. |

I have herd that parkers were like PRS, and once you play one you'll never want to play anything else.
I voted strats. and i cannot think of a Gibson under $500, but i can get MIM strats or tele all day long. not to mention most dealers have replacement parts so i could bastardize it to my own liking.
I think you would be lucky to find a used Gibson LP studio for under $500.
Maybe get one of those revers flying v's (what where thy thinking) |

I HATE those Reverse V's SO MUCH!
They are one of the ugliest guitars I have ever seen.
Seriously what was Gibson thinking when they made those guitars.
You would probably get beat up if you were a heavy metal band playing them. |
