Best Guitars For Shredding and Metal

I have Jackson and Charvel at the top of my list.And thats my list.

ESP \m/^o^\m/ or Washburn...i the ibanez RG series are also some serious shred machines...

Schecters are metal guitars, and yeah - you missed out the most obvious (Ibanez).

There are names that are brought to mind like the one's metioned but you can drop a action ,replace a neck,change a bridge add hot non hot pick ups ,shave your frets,alter your strings,add pre amps,switches,buttons and knobs and if you do all this with one of those guitars mentioned what would you call it ? YOURS?

Ibanez is one of the best, Schecter, ooh the best one ever: BC RICH !! WOOO.. no, don't get a BC Rich they suck donkey balls..

But I find my Godin is really good for shredding. Don't forget amps too, some amps are crap for shredding.

Strats don't suck, do they? I'd get a fat strat over an Ibanez or Schecter. I agree with B.C. Rich though - not my thing.

Strats, are great guitars...but the single coil sound doesnt usually cut it for metal heads, and even if you get the humbuckers on your strat...unless youre yngwie malmsteen-strats are not shred machines at all...

How can you all say that about Strats,the shredder to the Gods! It was good enough for JH, the man you where all doffing your caps to in another thread!

I'll say it again: STRATS ARE GREAT GUITARS! jimi hendrix was incredible. however, it wasnt so much his playing that made him famous. it was the fact that he was so innovative, original and out going with his music. sadly enough though, Jimi himself said, before his last show, that he didnt know what else he could give to the world. Jimi was a blues/rock player and his playing was an inspiration to thousands of guitar players. Also, he did not use strat's exclusively. he had a beloved fender jaguar and gibson flying V which he used often enough. Jimi had a rare talent for creating new ideas and a knack for getting heard; that deefa, was the extent of Jimi Hendrix. I should also add, the biggest factor in a guitarist's sound, is the guitar player him/herself. No one can sound like Eddie van halen, except ed. also...if you're a shitty guitarist, you're still a shitty guitarist even if you are playing a thousand dollar instrument.

It sounds almost cliche to say this these days, but anything with active EMG's in it will do just fine. I even played a steinberger once, which was fully outfitted with EMG's and despite it's strangely un-metal appearance, it sounded brutal. But it really is all in the hardware... and Rockfield pickups are a joke (they come standard in most BC Rich guitars).

Guitarboy, I wasn't saying they're good for metal... but I was just denying that they suck. With a humbucker in I bet they can handle metal. Some of nice necks that I reckon I could play fast on.

I'd have to agree with mattmurray. The hardware on a guitar is pretty much everything. And to all the B.C. Rich bashers: only the low end B.C. Rich guitars suck.Also, has everyone forgotten Charvel guitars? They are pretty much Strats with Humbuckers and jumbo frets.

I don't really agree that Strats are great guitars. Of course there are some great ones but that does really vary from guitar to guitar.

Generally they are bad, but you can get your hands on good ones.

I don't think it really matters what you play it on, just that you play.

If you can really shred, then you should be able to pick up old piece of junk guitar guitar and make it sing. I love my start. there are lots of people who can really shred on a start, single coil, or not.

I think I know why most people don't consider a Strat a Metal guitar. It depends what subgenre of metal you play on it.Like Calvin pointed out. Dave murray uses a Strat almost exclusively.However his Strat has a Floyd Rose and jumbo frets.I dont believe a regular strat would be perfect for metal, but it could handle it. Most modern metal uses a lot of power chords and heavy riffs, which a Strat wouldnt be ideal for.

Yeah it is mainly in the hardware, humbuckers are the best ones cause they have no noise or anything, EMG's are brutal, as Murray said.

Oh yeah and Steinburger's are freakin' ugly lol I hate those damn Square shaped bodies.. They can NOT be comfortable to play on : /

You know, it really doesn't matter. I actually use a Les Paul black Beauty (of course, my friends Fender works like a charm). I think that by playing on an instrument that is difficult to play fast and fluently, but yet still being able to play fast and fluently on, can make the better guitarist. Shredding on a Les Paul is really hard because the bottom frets have to be hit with control because your thumb literally slides underneath the guitar. Fender strats, Ibanez, Schetner, and pretty much anything that advertizes fast playing is a good "shred" guitar. I still recomend playing with the most difficult guitar out there, cause when even when you move to another guitar that is already designed to be easier to play, it is not even funny how fast you can go. I will admit, the fastest I have ever gone has been with a fender strat. So yes, they diffinately count for something.

Guitarboy, fat strats have a humbucker in the bridge - so I reckon they could handle heavier styles.

Yeah i use my les Paul Special II just for like punk songs and stuff. Not for heavy stuff or shredding because it doesn't have the right feel or sound.
I see how a harder to play guitar can improve you, because going from hard to easy is a breeze. My friend told me to learn on acoustic because it's supposedly harder, I think he has a point. But I did the electric thing :)

I mainly just mean the sound, like if it doesn't sound good then well you can't shred with it. As my topic says, looks don't always matter, it's all about the feel and sound of the guitar.

And yeah Dinkys are nice. If I went for a Jackson though, I'd probably get a Kelly. And Ever see the Ibanez EX series? SICK guitars man.

EDIT - Personally though, for full blown shredding, I'd go with Dean. I mean look at who uses them Dimebag [DID use them], Dave Mustaine, and Michael Angelo Batio. Either a Dean, or an Ibanez since they look/play awsome and Steve Vai, Paul Gilbert, and Satch use 'em. All three of which are shred geniuses.

id have to say ibanez, but only cause i have 2 of them, i tried a few jackson and i wasnt sure they were metal, there was just something about them.

i have the xpt700, its a great guitar but standing up, its unbalenced. so the neck goes down if ur left hand isnt holding it

the only thing i like about steve vai's guitar is the fret board inlays...

what about it being one of the best ibanez guitars and having many a great feature? Gems are known for being a little more than just fancy looking. My brother has a gem from the 80s that he has autographed by Vai And Satriani.
