in easier terms it's just a part of a song where the tempo gets cut waaaay down(usually to half time) so it will sound "heavier" or something or other... For good examples I wouldn't look up any -core genre, since you won't see a proper breakdown but rather a whole song as a breakdown. Or you could take the example of Van Halen's "Unchained" from Fair Warning--the song on the album has a breakdown in it where all the instruments slow/quiet down for a short duration and then build back up to the original riff. It's really just another part of a song--think of it like a bridge, since it doesn't get used(usually) more than one time in a song. |

So play a fast riff, slow it down to ½ speed
and then break back into the original tempo
of it? seems simple enough.
I needed to know cause im auditioning for
a Deathcore/fusion/reggae band and they said
can you play breakdowns, and i said yes .o

Yes and no, it doesn't have to be the same riff, it's just played over drums that typically are doing something at a half time feel(usually). Most metal core stuff is going to use just low C chugging usually involving triplets. Breakdowns are really just a slow bridge that just sort of hits, no real build up it just sort of sneaks in there and works it's magic(or annoyance). Listen to "Damage Inc." by Metallica and you'll hear the breakdown in the middle of the song(also just straight up badass thrash). Doesn't have to be a slow riff, but you'll note the big difference with how they present it and how the drums go to a really cool 16th high hat thing while slowing down the snare hits to what feels like half time. |

Usually when a song goes from one tempo to a much slower or more groove oriented tempo. I'm not sure if tempo is the right word for it or not. I'm guessing you joined a "core" band? lol. |

I note that most half-time feels are really driven by the drummer. |

You never hear metal bands singing about rainbows or birds with unusual plumage, like the Quetzal.

I write recipes. Then my kids sing them in character as Dio or Man-o-War. "Food Metal".
I also have written tounge in cheek stuff about Druids and Mighty Wing-ed Beasts. Many great metal songs have pretty silly lyrics.
Actually..do any not? |

HA! We used to call Dio the weatherman. There's was always something in his lyrics about the wind and the snow and the rain. |
