naah, cant give any vote. Slash is incredibly cool melodical player I know... Santana? How you even dare... Kobain, dunno if he is noted more the performer and musican rather than guitarist.... I kinda like how Edge approach, even thou he is mayb not so technical...

naah... I give Joe Perry a vote... and I dont have an idea why.

I think Slash made some pretty cool music over the years so I'm didn't choose him.

I choose Cobain (Because he's not even a mediocre guitarist)
and Edge (because every riff sounds the same)

And putting Santana on there, well, that's just f***ing stupid.

Saying that Kurt cobain is an overrated guiatrist is
wrong.Like emp said,he is not known for the guiatr playing
more for his songwriting. And i dont often hear people
say that "Man,kurt cobain.is the baddest GUITARIST 3VER!
i hear"he writes good songs" You could call an overrated
musician,but not guitarist,cause noone
rates him high.Furthermore,Id just like t say
again,thaaat,Santana is underrated..

As a poll it could do with an option to add our own guitarists.

For example the one in biffy clyro I would put in that poll

I voted santana. He is one of the few 'good guitarists' that hasn't shown one bit of growth in his entire career. Who wants to listen to the same thing for twenty-plus albums? Not I.

Rock on!

Mon the Biff!! :o)
I am surprised by your comment there. I was introduced to their music by one of my friends from Scotland. I wouldn't call their music great by any stretch, but I do enjoy it. Do people over in the UK think he is a great guitarist??

We had a total guitar issue with the headline "This man will change how YOU play GUITAR"

I just find their music pretty boring, in fact they were supporting the foo fighters last night and I saw them and from what I could discern from the over the top distortion the majority of their songs have a quirky intro then a standard boring verse. IMO.

A lot of people like them I just can't get into them.

On a side not Seasick Steve and John Paul Jones joined Dave Grohl for a song during the gig. It's nice to see JPJ is still rocking :P

lol @ THAT. There is a big difference between making exceptional music and making enjoyable music imo. There is some music out there that I enjoy that isn't what I would call amazing musicianship - and that's okay. But call a spade a spade - Biffy Clyro is music that I enjoy that doesn't particularly overwhelm me when it comes to quality of the songs.

Maamlsteen is an exceptional Guitarist! Not very
many of todays top technical musicians
can come close to his tone, knowledge, phrasing, vibrato
feeling, and speed. And those who can more than likely
imitated him.

You call hime overrated,I call
him The guy who inspired millions to not be a afraid
to show a little technique,or speed,regardless
of what people who called him a"smug souless **
say.He is a true artist,playing the music.he wishes
to.play regardless of what trends have befallen
the music scene.

He earned his spot in history,He was one
one the first musicians to merge classical and rock(beside
ritchie blackmore),to break the world from "blues box"
and did it all without succumbing to the lastest
trends,He is a true guitar hero..imo.

It doesn't sound like noise because it is muddied, it sounds like noise, because it doesn't sound like music. The songs I have heard sound like shredding for the sake of shredding.

Most of his musical inspiration(as i have read from his interviews)
Comes from classical violin,Which happens to be
a very virtuosistic style of playing.Would you scold an
orchestra violinist for playing a difficult peice by calling him
A * smug shredder*?

Also if you look on youtube, you will see some
covers of some classical pieces, that are played exactly as theywere written for the violin.
He uses a scalloped fretboard,(like
that of an oud) to add more of a classical tone to.his music
And as for the distortion,he only uses that to add sustain
to his guitar to make it more like a violin(because clean guitars
dont have alot of sustain compared to a violin).

Furthermore,People cannot grasp the fact of a rigid classical
musician,with virtuosistic chops,up on stage
jumping around,doing kicks,and spinning his guiatr,why?
Because there jealous that someone is actually talented enough
too be able too play both parts.

Reasons why slash is the most overrated.
1) GH3 (Need I say more? SELLOUT PIECE OF...)
2) Sweet Child o Mine. (Has become so overused I want to slap him for writing it)

Reasons why Cobain is Not Overrated Guitarist
1) Who remembers him for guitar? Everyone remembers him as a songwriter.

Never heard Edge or Perry.
And Why would anyone ever vote Santana!!!!????

Actually scratch the biffy vote, I'd go with Angus Young. AC/DC are probably the only band to make money releasing the same song with different words again and again.

Okay that's a bit extreme but the point stands they sound samey.

Also I find Malmsteen boring, and just cause it's wrote like classical violin doesn't mean it's good. The amount of shredders that play Paganini's 24th caprice and none of them have made a version greater or anywhere near equal to the original imo

Interesting. What I think, keeping own style and spesific sound is not a bad thing. Like, "hey, that must be santana playing" how many guitarist you can say the same? SRV did his own style and be recognized almost immediately... and I think you are also wrong about Santana growth, his later career, he did many projects away from his "natural" style say from oye como va... to smooth and so on... he did many different style of music on his later career..

@ 2112, I have no problem with Malmsteen jumping around on stage and doing kicks or whatever. I really enjoy the music/performances of Vai, who probably shows off more than Malmsteen does. It's just a preference for people really. He is obviously a good player and there is no reason for you or me to not like him. My preference is for more melody in the music and I don't like that style really. I don't care for violin shredding either really. I just don't think Malmsteen comes even close to the legends of guitar, which is where many people put him.

Another guy that could be overrated is the dude who "can give YOU the keys to the lambhourgini." More shredding for the sake of shredding.

I put Santana because I wasn't sure who else I should put. But Surprisingly Slash didn't win this poll (yet). Everyone on youtube says how good he is yet most of them are little kids who discovered him from Guitar hero.

p.s. Why are Slash's signature guitar models $11,000 on Guitar Center!? WTF.

Malmsteen has no feeling. And if his music comes from "virtuoso" violin, then he's listening to the wrong people. There's a difference between shredding "for the sake of shredding" and shredding for a musical purpose.

I've yet to hear a song where Malmsteen doesn't go overboard on his "technique". This is sorta what I mean... there is no melodic feeling to anything he does in this song... he even screws over the EVH solo... how you can say that there is any feeling in this besides him just setting his metronome to 180bpm and throwing out sixteenth notes. I'm sorry... that's not music in my eyes.

Fair enough guys,I can respect that. But ftw
I wasn't trying to persuade you,I was just trying
to make you more informed about him,and the style of
music he plays.(since he is one of my hero's)

* yngwie fun fact#23*
He came to america With nothing but Two shirts, tdo
pairs of pants, and a fender strat. Now he is a god amongst
shredders, has an impressive reptoire of collaborations
(especiall witH DIO) and is now excepted as a
contemporary composer in the modern classical scene.
