Whats your practice schedule? How often do you practice? How long? And what topics are your focussing on? How do you track your progress?
These are just some questions I started thinking about recently. |

Answer: None, whenever i want. Which is a lot. I find if i had a strict schedule on anything id start to not like doing it and not do it... So i leave it loose... Some days i dont even play, although those are rare... But its really whenever i want...
I focus on whatever i need to get better at... Right now i know how to solo over chords and how to solo over scales but i feel like i do too much of one or the other and repeate myself, so im working on not doing that...
I dont really track progress but i can just notice it. i guess... a great way to do this is to record yourself... |

Thanks for your replies guys!
I started to play with a schedule, and I think it has improved my playing so much. Even tough its a schedule, I still enjoy all of the exercises with scales, rhythm and picking exercises.
@Jazz: How many hours do you practice each day? |

I've started doing a practice routine that's about 2-3 hours long each day.
Really have gotten a lot better since I started(timing and knowledge are coming along nicely). |

Hmmm, depends on the day and what I'm doing. But I really do try a minimum of 5 hours every day - then I carry on with my three year plan (for my music career) and work or whatever else the day holds for me. But I'm almost always thinking about music one way or another, so I mentally practice a lot longer.
Obsessed is the right word I suppose - but that's just a simple word for passionate ;)
What's REALLY weird though, is that I STILL don't have calluses on my fingers! |

Lets see
Monday-Friday: 4th hour at school, theory and F-Horn for an hour (Band without strings allowed? WTF?)
At lunch i play my acoustic (just some chords) for half an hour (1 or 2 days a week)
Get home plug in my electric and play for about 4 hours.
Weekend/days off: Play electric all day.
Electric schedule:
5ths/Pwr chords: half hour
Riffs/scales: hour (day off: about 2 hrs)
Sweeping/Shredding: hour and half (day off: same, but more sets w/ breaks in between)
Fx/Non shredding lead:Hour

Oh dear, you guys have far too much time! at least 5 hours?? thats what i get on a sunday when i have not much to do ^^
Respect to so much discipline, also you domigian. Thats really a lot.
And case, i totally agree with you (I still envy you on the 2-3 hours btw :D) a routine helps so much i think.
I get to maybe 1,5 hours per day atm. But still, better than nothing! |

haha I hear you man, when I was in school I had at most maybe 1-2 hours per day that I could play since I had other things to do around the house, then homework, Senior project, and then I could play guitar haha.
I start usually within the first hour that I am awake though xD |

Sometimes it gets stupid... I'm willing to lose sleep and miss out on meals just to get something down pat. Simply because there's no way in hell I'm going to live my life doing a job I don't want to do. So even if I have to sacrafice a few hours or end up forgetting about the time; I'm willing to take it so I do what I love doing. Might sound weird, but that's just how much I wanna get somewhere with this. |

Haha, yeah, definitely! I think many musicians also "hide" behind their muse saying that a practicing routine would only destroy their creativity. However, I strongly believe that they compliment each other. Everytime i look deeper into some sort of scale i end up with some quite cool riffs in that scale just by knowing it across the fretboard! I actually found my desire to learn in music, and it helped me a lot in any kind of situation, |

Btw: Jazz, these are very wise words! I wish you the best of luck on your journey to achieve what you want. With this attitude I am sure that you will make it someday (and also with your 5h-per-day practicing routine :P ). Chapeau! |

hahaha true enough!! :D
But I also think that knowledge deserves to be shared. I really see no point in keeping such useful information to ourselves, when there are so many people in the world who can benefit from it. |

Monday to Friday 9-5. 1 hour lunch and as many coffee breaks as necessary. Really variable on topics. Split between just having fun beating something to death and working on stuff that I find hard. |

I try to learn one or two new songs a week. I play them over and over whenever I get the chance and it drives my wife crazy. Actually, she's kinda use to it now. I can probably get in 20 to 30 mins a day.
I work from 9 to 6 and I have a one and a four year old. They like music too. Lucy is four and plays random notes on a C Maj blues harmonica. I play appropriate chord progressions and it sounds like she knows what she's doing! It's so cool and always blows people away!
Sadie is one and plays the drums and the keyboard. She needs to practice though! |
