So I was playing my 1979 american strat and my friend brought over his 2006. They both play amazingly well but it got me thinking. what would you all prefer.

Neither. I seriously dislike strats, though not as much as I thouroughly despise telecasters!

I'd have to have the '79 just for the vintage factor. You can get a new one at anytime. New ones aren't as hard to come by. |

I used to hate Teles too, but man, some guys can get such a great tone from those things. |

I own a '78 and I have to say I have yet to play a guitar that plays as smooth as mine. Not even brand new $2000 Strats feel as good to me as the 78 does. |

Try a G&L Legacy, S-500 or Comanche. I can almost guarantee the old Fender Strats will just become a memory in about 10 minuets flat!
Same can be said for the G&L ASAT compared with the Telecaster.
And just before I here the first "How dare you!", every guitar I've just named was designed by Leo Fender and George Fullerton (George & Leo hence 'G&L') to be better than the original 'branded' Fenders! |

Know what... my local guitar shop only caries G&L ... i have tried most of them and disagree. I dont have much experience with newer strats except for the occational guitar center visit and when a friend brings one along but the G&L's dont do it for me really.
It might be because I have only played new ones not setup etc but.... just my opinion

@dsesh
I think you might have a point about the G&L's in your music shop needing a setup. I have an S-500 and an ASAT and they are the finest instruments I've ever played and yes, in the past I've owned both an American Fender Strat and a Gibson Les Paul. After discovering G&L It didn't break my heart to part with either of them. Tell the boss in your music store he's missing out on some good sales! |

Definitely 1979. Great year for cars and girls.
Anybody can own a new Strat...but only a chosen few should have the honor of driving a 79 Trans Am or playing a 79 Strat. Not only cars and guitars were great back then...you should have known the girls...halter tops were the dress code. |

@raptorclaws
hahaha, "smokey and the bandit", eh? lol
I wish halter tops were the dress code again ;) but the cheerleaders skirts are really really short at my school...
I'm roughly 6'0" tall, and when I walk behind some 5'1" little cheerleader and I can almost see her underwear under the actual skirt just by walking behind her... haha yeah, very short... there's probably about 3 inches of actual skirt now!
but I digress, I would love to have a vintage 79 strat by Fender, as well as the Trans Am. |

@ soy.el.che It was not a choice between getting them.. I own a 79 and I love it more then any new strat... plus its worn to perfection and plays like a dream...
