My dad on the piano

i dont know if i told you guys about my dad but hes pretty amazing, this is a video my sister took at his concert on the barge. its in a memorial to sept 11. this is just a small segment of it.



hes been playing basicly his whole life. for about 60+ years. he started on a really bad piano back in the 40s. he wasnt too wealthy so he played what he could, would go down to the piano store and just play there somtimes. hes loosing his hearing, so he cant play as well as he used to. he used to be able to hear somthing and play it perfect, kinda like me, but now he can barley hear himself play.

His playing is beautiful, though i'm sure he already knows that. Years of experience have definitely payed off.

Wow...so THIS is where you get IT from eh? It's in your dna! He's great man! Very very sorry about his hearing. That's gotta be one of the worse things that could happen to a musician. Also nice to hear a son say good things about his dad! Tell the old man the gang at the forum says "Hey! Wazzup!"

hah yeh hes really really good. hes not the type for forums, and doesnt have time for piano, hes a money manager so uk... he used to be much better. but thats basicly not playing for months or seriously for years. he used to practice much more. doesnt have the time. ill record a first hand vid of him playing at home. our piano is a bit better

Gosh. You know I'm probably going to feel a little daft for being the only one to say this, but his playing actually made my cry a little. In a good sort of way, don't get me wrong, I'm certainly not saying his playing is bad! It's just I actually got lost listening to it, I was actually thinknig of September the 11th listening to him and I got a little upset. His playing is just magnificent. Sorry about his hearing.

yeah thanks. the only piano that i know better then that one is my dads home piano. his steinway concert grand. from 1925. it sings.

however that is the most beautiful thing. i love it. its just perfection. absolutly gorgeous

I can play that :D It's EPIC. But I've never had the chance to play it on an Organ like that... that's awesome. I'm jealous.

i can kinda play that. not really though. i think its the most beautiful thing, to think that someone thought of that is beyond concievable, the brilliance of it.

i don't mean to be a whinny *, but a piano and a organ are two very different instruments.

and bach is amazing and left us with tons of material to learn like his books and chorals

yeah, in additionto hearing he also has arthritis... he was brilliant when i was younger...

@RA, I dunno who that comment was aimed at... Eliott's Dad, right? Either way - it's down to versitility. The difference is similar to a guitar and a bass. The only major difference is the octaves being above instead of all on one keyboard and that there's a delay when you play.

I dunno why you guys are so sad though... there are deaf musicians out there and they play with the vibrations of the notes. Naturally you won't be able to enjoy the sounds but he can still be a part of music - think positive! :D

he can, its harder for him to play though, espec with authrits. but he really loved playing forhimself.

the comment had nothing to do with his dad. EMB was talking about good pianos then mentioned a really good organ. I don't know if he was saying there the same instrument but he seem to implied it to me. so unfortunately it seems, as much as i hate it, i have a pet peeve. it make me feel like a whinny ** i hate it. but just because two instruments share the same controlling device(here a keyboard) doesn't make them the same. now i will debate to death that a piano and a Rhodes are completely different but here it is easy. A piano is a Chordophone while a organ is a Aerophone there in to different families. Hell originally they(organs) only had holes on a pipe you covered. Then later they(I don't know) developed the wonderful device we called the musical keyboard and it was then and still is being applied to many different instruments. There is a huge misconception going on now that says if it has a keyboard there the same just different timbres which in my opinion is killing instruments with a keyboard controller(along with a even bigger problem "digital simulation"). But Rhodes pianos maybe leading the comeback(new ones coming out) with bands such a medeski martin and wood, and many others calling bull*** on that myth maybe we can get other Moog(in the seance of musical exploration) out there one can hope(and yes I'm aware things are coming out i search all the time but who has thousands to throw around)



also i have been know to piss off people with the hole Beethoven was deaf thing too, but come on this is not joking around time losing ones hearing when in it for sounds(many reasons to do music, maybe for the girls? ;)] is just down right horrible. if i was told i could no longer hear the wind blow or the rain fall i would cry. and any musician would too. not meant to be a shot in any way. hell if god took away my Mingus or Monk well i don't know what I'd do

I, too, would be devastated if I lost my hearing... HOWEVER - music is and always will be my obsession, even if I go deaf (and I know this isn't the case for everyone) I would still use what I can feel and see as a source to create music... e.g. watching rain fall - each drop creates a note and a beat, and with that it can lead into a busy and exciting composition... even as I'm thinking of it my mind is making melodies this very second. Of course I'll feel more than depressed I can't hear - but I could hear, and I'll use that to my advantage. Unlike those being born deaf (I do often wonder what it's like for them... since they use other senses) I have the luxury of remembering those notes and I'll then be able to hear it that way.

I know that paragraph had nothing to do with EMB's dad and it is a shame he's losing his hearing, but perhaps he won't lose it all.

Also, about the organ... I completely understand what you mean there RA, but I think he was satisfied with the response to his first video (that first one being the reason for this topic) and decided to add on another random video just for the sake of showing people other things his dad can play - and not to say that it's the same as a piano. (I might be wrong - but this is my assumption)
