Both are good! And in the old days they borrowed from each other a lot.
Led Zeppelin was a British band, but they were influenced a lot by American blues as well as early Rock n Roll like Elvis and Chuck Berry. However, the American rock bands that followed LZ (such as Boston, Heart, Billy Squier) often played covers of Led Zeppelin songs at their concerts. |

I actually like British Rock better. I'm talking Classic Rock though.
Zeppelin, Sabbath,Floyd,The Who, Priest, Beatles, Stones,Diamond Head, Motorhead, lets not forget Punk and British overdrive. For some reason I feel British rock has greater emotion and energy. For example Anarchy in the UK has more anger than Blitzkrieg Bop. I think the British had more inpiration to write good songs. Some of the new bands in both sides of the Atlantic arent too good though. |

Depends on what you mean by rock. For me, rock is The Beatles, The Kinks, Oasis, The Who, etc.

Oh shoot. I accidentally voted for American :( I wanted to vote for British, considering that my three "indispensable" bands are Led Zeppelin, Radiohead, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Two of which are "British" staples, and my other, less obsessive, tastes lean towards overseas artists like U2 (Irish...), The Who, Rolling Stones, Oasis, Coldplay (yes, I like Coldplay), The Kinks, and many more only for 4 easy payments of 14.9... wait.
I forgot The Beatles, double you tea eff. |

oh god the choices. I guess I wont vote because im more into metal.
but lets see if this were for metal...
AMERICA- Megadeth, Metallica (c. 80), uhh cant think of more right now...
BRITISH- Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin (some people consider it metal), Judas Priest.
i would vote Britain |

I do not consider Led Zeppelin heavy metal, especially taking into account the band's hate of that label. |

Mici From Kosovo
look at zeppelins first disc (records back in those days) all a bunch of cover songs from American black (African American if you will) artists.
Look at Cream who got Eric Clapton god status by covering a song by Robert Johnson (crossroads anybody).
If you trace back who inspired who it all goes back to Africa.
(Shhhhh.....I cheated and voted twice)

i love all forms of rock and quite honestly could care less where
they originated from
zeppelin in my opinion is nothing more than a classic hard blues rock band
and couldn't possibly even be considered metal by any means. |

Yeah, Led Zep was never metal. Damn metal players trying to claim one of ours (Rock & Blues players) as their own. |

@ telecrater:-
I think you'll find Clapton had acquired God like status before Cream & Crossroads. Think Yardbirds.
Incidently, it just proves how important it is to be in the right place at the right time. Blackmore, Paige and Beck (not forgetting Hendrix)were all much better than Clapton around that time, but who turned out to be the blue eyed boy? |

I like Page better :) All of his songs just move exactly how I think they should, to the point where I can usually tell if it's Page playing just by listening. |

I'm surprised that no one's mentioned the bands that gave us (arguably) two of the finest rock singles of all time, that is " All right now" and "Smoke on the water" (incidentally, both British!). |

Yes Deefa, Free and Deep Purple, there are far more British rock bands than there are American ones, and when rock hit its prime the vast majority was from England |

Isnt Metal originally British?(Sabbath) The only good Metal bands to come out of the U.S. are Thrash bands. African Rock? Blues inspired rock, which inpired Metal, but if youre talking about pentatonics, it wasnt just in Africa that it was used. |

Hey, I am brand new to this place and figured this is as good of thread as any to begin to contribute. Gotta say there's a lot of depth to this site. I've picked up a bunch of new ideas in the week since I stumbled upon it. Great work all.
With that preamble out of the way...I'd have to go with both American and Brits. So many great acts on both sides of the pond!
By the way, Dave Matthews is from South Africa. You gotta give Robert Johnson, Son House, etc to the American Delta region. They were born (and created their music) in the U.S. |
