Dang, I don't even thought the diffrence. Lesson request!!!! what the heck is the diffrence between Brutal death, grindcore and slam meta.

Back when i was a youngster, there was glam metal(really more rock/pop), heavy metal, thrash metal, and death metal.

I'd really like to know...Killswitch Engage, what the heck would they be called.

i can't see how anyone can listen to country music. shudder...

some forms of metal i can rock out to. others are just noise to me. ironically, one of my favorite metal bands is a satire that makes fun of metal bands, but it's still one of the rockingest and downright "best" metal bands i've heard in a long time. i'm talking about dethklok.

Dethklok are legendary.

I don't like your classes of "sub-genres" - they're crap, it's so pointless coming up with all of these extra sub genres. So I'm going to list every form of metal I love! :D

Necrophagist
Symphony X
Opeth
Amon Amarth
To-Mera (BRUTALLLLLL EPICNESS)
Arch Enemy
Blind Guardian
Tyr
Wintersun
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum
Bal-Sagoth
Fair To Midland
Dream Theater
Hammerfall
Linkin Park
Arkona
Firewind
Power Quest
Turisas
Children of Bodom
Lamb of God
Lacuna Coil
Archeon
SIKTH
Soul Source
Mercenary
Sonica
Scar Symmetry
Therion
Seven Mary Three
Daath
Death
Neurothing
Unexpect
Sonata Artica
Limp Bizkit

Ok that's pretty much all I can remember right now... -_- haha

ENJOY! :D

Grindcore was named by Napalm death, but its roots are in 80' hardcore punk.

Slam metal... well... I heard sentence before, but I dont have a clue. Wiggers maybe :)

We live in the categorized world, we eat categorized food and listen categorized music... and play categorized instruments with categorized effects and pedals, amps... and so on... Its meaning is to get your attention away from meaning.

Categorized Cheers!

yeah i agree with the "categorization". i think it can be useful when describing a band's style to someone who hasn't heard them, but i would just classify a band as this type of metal as opposed to another type of metal.

less than jake was a legendary punk ska band, and hot stove jimmy was an old psychobilly-carnival ska band, but they are both "ska bands"...

wow, what's with the whining about categories? Look, If you think bands like Devourment are the same as bands like Necrophagist, more power to ya; but I like to be able to define what kind of music I listen to is all.

I don't typically care for the whole categorization thing either. However, it does give me an idea of what NOT to listen too. When I hear death, grindcoe, guttural or anything like that I typically avoid it. But if I hear progressive or symphonic I'll take a listen.

How would y'all categorize Caninus or Hate Beak. You gotta listen to theses bands just for fun! The lead singer for Caninus is a Pit Bull and for Hate Beak a Parrot. I kid you not!

I dont think Caninus is pure grindcore, I could say its deathgrind that is bit more technical than hardcore-punk based grindcore.

And hatebeak is death metal.

But, these are just not my cup of tea anyway so i could be wrong. Doh well...

Less Than Jake is awesome gx! It is some of the best music to party to for sure. Because I am a big nerd, I used to always put on Liquor Store when I went out to buy alcohol in college. hehehe

As for categorization of metal, I think it is worthwhile to a degree. I really like metalcore and older stuff like Pantera and Down (although I am not sure Down is actually metal). I like a little Hatebreed, which I guess is hardcore, but I generally don't even give anything a listen in the really dark stuff, because I don't care for it.
