In response to the ongoing post about the abysmal selection of modern music, or more to the point, the inability to uncover good new music: I thought it might be fun to share any good new music out there to expand our horizons.
Guidelines:
1. Music has to have been released in the last 5 years.
2. Has to be someone/some band you think the majority of people on the forum don't know about.
I got two: Matt Nathanson (hear some of his songs on Scrubs) and Rhett Miller (lead singer of the Old 97's).

Good music isn't necessarily underground though.
I agree, but the point of creating this thread is to open up new avenues for people to try out. Everyone out here already has their opinions made up on mainstream bands.
When I get time, I'm going to search every artist suggested just to broaden my horizons.

Ok, if you want genres then both of mine are rooted in the prog rock genres. Porcupine Tree also combine elements of psychedelic rock, pop rock and metal, and Opeth combine a lot of jazz and metal elements, switching between clean and death vocals, heavy riffs and mellow acoustic passages. If you're not a fan of death vocals, then their 2003 album Damnation is purely 70s style prog rock. Not a growl or double kick in sight! There are other songs by Opeth that don't contain growled vocals, "Burden" from their new album "Watershed" is hauntingly beautiful.

I'm not a massive fan of The Mars Volta, they always seem a bit too chaotic for me! I've got a couple of their albums though, I should really give them another listen!
I saw Streetlight Manifesto live a couple of months ago, they were supporting Reel Big Fish.

I liked Wolfmother. They put out an album a few years back, in 2006 I think. It wasn't anything spectacularly original, but it was kind of like Classic Rock. I think they've disbanded though.
I also like Tool, who are like Prog. Rock. They're quite cool. Their last album was 10,000 days which came out a few years back.

Heh, cool, I just found out Buddy Guy made a new album. He's been around for ages though, so I'm not sure he qualifies as "new" music, but he's damn good. The blues will never die! :D
I haven't posted in this thread for a while, but anywho.
Imagine my amazement when I first heard The Mars Volta-live, opening for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It was about 2 hours of "...woah, I think I just came out of an epileptic seizure."
Also, I recommend John Frusciante's solo work. It's a huge mish-mash of genres. All different kinds of rock (surf, funk, even some metalish stuff), electronica, folk (I call it folk because it's just him playing an acoustic guitar and singing), etc.
I bought one of Incubus's albums a while back, I'm going to look it up on wikipedia... "A Crow Left of the Murder." That's a cool name for an album, but I never really listened to it too much. Maybe I'll go find it today.
