I tune mine like:
e--------------0------
B-----------0-5--------
G--------0-4-----------
D-----0-5--------------
A--0-5-----------------
E-5-------------------
That's Unison I believe.
And then when it sounds good I play D, Dsus4, Cadd9, G
And if it sounds good then I just keep on going.
I combine them both cause I can't play the string open then turn the key, my ear isn't trained. |

I used to do it like GuitarBoy666, but then I got a tuner, but I still use that method when I can't be bothered to get out my tuner. |

I use a tuner most of the time, but when I want to quickly check if I'm in tune, I do unison. |

I do tuner if I'm doing a change in standards like Stand-E to Stand-D, but for going into drops or checking im atleast close to in-tune unison and open strings. |

^ I never did understand how tuning by harmonics worked.
Anyone care to tell me?
@GRX
I do that too to check if I'm in tune.
And I also remembered another way I tune it (if I just put new strings on it I always use this)
If I have another guitar in tune, I pluck the 1st or 6th string on it then I tune that string so it matches, then just do unison for all the rest. |

I try by ear first, then unison, then a tuner.
My ear does me well most the time but after being aroudn noisy computers all day they just cannot focus.
I alwasys use a tuner if i'm recording. nothing is like a back track that's out of tune |

i use the unison mostly with my electric because my tuner sucks and it doesn't pick up the sound even with the cord in and about 50/50 when im using my accoustic |

I tune it by tuning the high e string, then playing the 7th fret on that string and tune the next lowest string to that pitch.
Basically, it's the same as tuning by the fifth fret, except I do it at the seventh fret and I descend. |

I always use the Unison, can't do it by ear and have no idea what a tuner is... I mean, I know what it's used for, but could someone tell me more...
And I don't understant how that Harmonics tuning works, never heard of it before...
@Skold
If you tune your guitar like that you would need completely different chord patterns, right? |

I don't think he would, Mici. I think it's sorta the same as how I do it but it's kinda diff. Idk.
I didn't tune my whole guitar like that. More like "checking to make sure it's in tune"
But i think he might mean he tunes a string to a certain pitch then he gets the 7th fret to match the string lower than it. I don't know I am not an expert.
And in regards to the tuner:
The one I used to have had something like
-500 -400 -300 -200 -100 0 +100 +200 +300 +400 +500
Something like that. And what you do is switch this little button to what string your tuning, then pluck the string open and make it land PERFECTLY on zero.
On my RP70 I have a tuner, what that does is it has a bunch of lights on it. What you do there is there are 5 negative lights and 5 positive lights (5 on each side) and then in the middle there is a green light. Again, you're trying to get the pitch to land on the "zero" or the green light. |

Your tab was almost right, but you forgot to tab it out to where it descends. |

if im at my CPU ill put on a song and play along with it. i can tell right away obviously if im flat/sharp. otherwise, usually by ear, if im playing with someone else, definitely a tuner. |

If a tuner isn't near, or at the house I am at, I just think of Enter Sandman. The first note is low E open, and I compare. That is just me. |

Use a bunch of stuff myself depending on the situation and intonation status of the guitar. Mostly harmonics though. One thing I never do is top to bottom. I tune my E's then work towards the center. If just one string is out I can usually just strum 2 strings then tune the interval. I never use a tuner I find my ear does a way better job. |

I used to tune by ear but now usually use a tuner. A lot of us males don't have hearing as good as we might think we do...especially as we get older.
Re effort. I've always found a tuner the least effort. Perhaps it's the different ways we string guitars but my guitar is rarely out of tune even after playing it for a couple of hours...unless I use an alternative tuning |
