I cant stress enough how hip hop should not even be regarded as music unless the artist has some understanding of music theory.Someone on this forum said that hip hop was nothing without the copyrights .Totally agree.Whats up with Mtv they should change their name to crapvision.Theres not even any music videos that they play.

Haha, Rap/hip hop all crap? Most of it is, especially mainstream's, which are just for money, although, if you dig deep enough, you'll find some great rap with true heart and talent.
I'll admit, I don't know the full history, but the similarities between spoken word and rap are uncanny. There's rhythm, there's imagery, it more than just poetry, it's art!
I feel ashamed that I do not own these real rap artists' albums, although the holidays are hear...
One rapper I can think of is Immortal Technique he has it all, especially the conspiracy theories, he's nut's, but has such amazing control over language. |

Yeah, some Hip Hop and rap is quality stuff. Some of the rhyming in rap music mesmorizes me. Have a listen to Ill Bill - he's brilliant.
Lol, might be a bit of guilty pleasure - but I like some mainstream gangster rap (The Game, 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg etc). |

Yeah, I kinda like some Eminem that realy mean something, also like the way words sound when 50 cent keeps his teth in the same position during the whole song.
There are really some great hip-hop and rap songs, but mostly it's just materialistinc crap.
BTW, has anyone heard this son "Remember The Name" from Fort Minor, I really like that song. U should give it a listen. |

I personally think that Rap is the biggest rip off of music that has ever happened since the caveman! But the sample thing i am not into at all period anyway. If you want to write a poem write one!dont still samples of guitarist and basist, keyboards, drummers,STEAL there sound ,talent, therory, flip a few buttons mix them, smile with the gold teeth and act like a someone that know anything.Dont get me wrong there rich, but so are the crack dealers,i think they still turn it there way and make money off it .....sorry this subject pisses me off!
Where is the Talent? My momma left me when i was young had to go out side and get the shit done! COME ON!Again sry this gets me HOT! |

Well... I think the talent is in the lyrics. Of course you can't just take any old lyric and use it as an example (you do get shit hip hop, just like you get shit metal). As with samples... it doesn't bother me. They are not musicians in the same way as people like us so they're just adapting I suppose.
Also, samples are just backing to them. Sort of like a modern day version of blues guitarists using 12 bar blues and other blues progressions, except they use various different sources. |

I have nothing against samples either. Maybe it's because when i mess around with my friends, we make our own, or incorporate ours with some sound bite.
Has anyone checked JoJo Mayer's group Nerve? once you open your mind and ears, the sounds the whole band makes are amazing. Then again, JoJo is a beast at drumming. Definitely someone to checkout.

I think with the rap thing and the sample thing is my age cause I was playing for sometime before that happened and remember when it started gettin around and I thought gee this is shit.To me it was and still is cheating I dont know why i feel this way but I allways have.I do agree Doz tho I guess with rap the talent is the lyrics but the samples sry bro's I just do not get.Why sample it why not play it?I have prgrams with the loop things and I played with it once and thought a moron can do this?wheres the talent?is it in selecting the loops or something or phasing in or out?I just didnt get.Mabe I am just Old.....lol |

wow, jojo mayer's stuff sounds awesome. im listening to him on myspace at the moment. i really dig it. does he have any albums?
im not sure where i stand on the whole hip hop/rnb issue. yeah, like doz said, some is shit, but the shit stuff seems to be what is popular. the hip hop band The Roots, however, use live instruments rather than relying on samples. I guess using samples as the main basis of a song is kinda unimaginative, even if it is an interpolation, although it could be seen as an artist paying tribute to another artist, rather than just trying to rip them off. for example, when playing live, RHCP often play part of "You're Gonna Get Yours" by Public Enemy before "Give It Away", and the intro to "London Calling" by The Clash before "Right On Time". Anthony's vocals are very much influenced by rappers such as Chuck D, and Flea is a massive punk fan. I suppose that this is just covering a song though. In Oasis's hit Don't Look Back In Anger, the piano intro is a nod to "Imagine" by John Lennon, although again this is an interpolation rather than a sample.
Going back to PE though, "You're Gonna Get Yours" features samples from Dennis Coffey and Captain Skyy. However, often the main feature of hip hop music are the vocals - as doz pointed out, the samples are just there as a backing, a vehicle to the rhymes and rhythms of the vocalist. in the vast majority of cases, no non-musician would focus on what the band/samples behind the vocalist is doing.
at the end of the day, rapping is just a more rhythmic, less melodic alternative to singing. and it isn't just hip hop which uses samples. loads of different pop artists incorperate samples into their music, and not wanting to criticise anyone here (because people not criticising other people is an awesome thing about this forum), but saying that it is only hip hop which uses samples and criticising the genre for using them is possibly being a little bit narrow-minded. |

Lots of Mainstream music seems to be similar to what we percieve as "not real music." If you really want to argue that music has to have talent, is it the talent to sell enough records to go gold? or is it the talent to sell out and know how to play the game? Or is it talent of focusing on technicality and sounding "robotic?" Talent could be just the creativity it self.
All music is "good," it is some form of expression, whether it is masked or not by greed, or hunger, etc. Well I believe it...
Ah blackholesun (Nice name by the way), I think we're on the same Ave. I use to argue that rap, pop etc isn't real if they don't play, but with the day and age we're in, I feel ignorant saying that, It feels to narrow. As of right now, we are using technology to communicate, to "write" (Typing), yes this soudns far fetched, but I like to try and understand all sides before having to choose a side. I'm glad you enjoyed JoJo's work. I don't mean to brag but seeing him do a guitar clinic at Five Towns College made me really begin to enjoy his newest technique of simulating electronic drums.
Notim, if you really appreciate people playing with "talent," check out JoJo Mayer's Nerve, brings a whole new meaning to techno, or what ever genre you wish to call it.
Has anyone heard of Screaming Headless torsos? (Yes, Mayer joined them for the 1995 album) I forget the singer, but his vocals turn to a very heavy focus on rhymes and rhythm, a lot of his influence actual comes from poets, and spoekenword. Amazing work. |

this is an old forum but i still want to post in it.
i love most rock except death metal and some heavy metal. prob with some of those is i dont want to listen to grunting and grouching and then have to listen to a guitar solo for the last 7 mins..just not my style.
i like all other rock, some pop, some punk, little country (although theres a fine line between country and rock...lynyrd skynyrd comes to mind)err i dont like a lot of jazz, same with rap/hip hop, and blues but some is o.k.
now to my anger on rap:i just dont get it... i mean i could be a rap star. all i have 2 do it paint my teeth gold get about 500 fake chains, get a couple ho's, and flash money down the screen like it rain...through a couple swears in there and i got a gold record. theres no talent in rap, no musical intruments, and i just dont get it. i guess anything with money, gurls, and shiny things is popular now...and im only 13.
i also got a soft spot for classical music. piano, violins...my dad plays piano and hes gr8. i grew up with classical music and still kinda like it.(its tourcher after 3 hours straight tho)
basicly im saying i like most music where the bands/people have talent cept emo, death metal, and jazz |

No, no... you couldn't be a rap star. Lol... but let's look at hip hop in general. You know rap comes from people interacting over breakbeats from old funk songs (just the drum parts, sometimes with bass) whilst breakdancers did their thing. I understand that it was originally just to give the audience someone to follow and be lead by. Obviously, this gradually grew into lyrics... but with hip hop the real talent is finding breakbeats that others hadn't used and quick mixing them really accurately live using two (sometimes more) turntables.
Then the MC got more important, so I guess the talent is in the rhyming skills. Writing can be a talent, and I really enjoy early hip hop (which was originally against gang crime and gang violence). When NWA brought gangster rap onto the table is where all the bad imagery comes from. Gangster rap still has some good rhyming I guess, but I prefer the non violent hip hop by artists like Kanye West and Jay Z. |

some hip hop is good but most is about people havin ho's and spankin ther biothches and making $$$.the djs and mcs do have a skill, it takes a skill to mix the beats in some cases, its the singers tht dont, especially those who dont dance. my family knew som1 who was in the music buissness and theres a fat old lady(lol) at home tht writes all the new pop, rap and hip hop stuff. the acctuall singers besides theyr dancing have basicly no skill. im not saying i dont like rap/hip hop, i kinda have to, lots of my friends do and thts all i hear nowadays, but its not my kinda music.
ever seen the movie fame? how bout highskool musical. ive seen fame but not highskool musical, which im shure u guys heard of. fame was made in 1980 and thats what all these dumb disney channel musicals are based on. and fame is actually a good movie for a musical. thats where the dancing came from. before tht in the 70s ther was disco which i dont like but also has a good beat and rythm. i guess u combine the 2 and sing about money, gurls, ex.. u get rap |

wow what an interesting discussion.
I pretty much hate a lot of 80's music, for the same reason there is so much anger for rap. it's all image and not content.
but on the other hand when you really listen to the music of some rap/hip hop it is well done. give a listen to the music Dr. Dre produces. well done, not my style but well done.
I'm working on a new musical genre call country-grunge, think it will work? |

NWA is violent music, but It has a lot of expression. I am pretty impressed by how angry Easy-E sounds. BTW DOZ Jay-Z is a satanist. Look up his backmasking in youtube. You may all ready be under his control. Do you have the sudden urge to buy his records? Lol. |

EMB: I'm talking breakdances, which would be hard to do whilst MCing at the same time, lol. And I may be mistaken, but original Hip Hop came at about the same time as Disco. I don't think breakdancing has much in common with disco dancing really. The Bronx (where Hip Hop originates from), had a secluded culture.
League: did you know the true definition of a Satanist doesn't mean someone who worships the devil? It's just someone who places their own interests above others and live under an alternative belief system (which is non religious). |

Just looking at all the differing opinions on this thread ,it's obvious that music means different things to different people. I suppose in the end, if you can play a guitar to it, it has a place on this site!

Agh, music I fail at backing up my musical sense just for me I tend to listen to the guitar more then the lyrical motion of the song so I prefer instrumental songs such as: Anastasia(Pulling Teeth) & Master of Puppets by Metallica, I don't mind a few classical tracks either if I'm in the right mood.
The only music I can say is Dance music with the exception of some Trance, R'n'B, Pop, The now common MTV Rap and boy/girl bands (shudders). To be honest I dislike a lot of modern bands (Dragonforce, Bullet for my Valentine this are the two mostly talked about in my school) as well mostly due to there music seeming to lack the emotional value of pre 2000's mid 90's which causes my real life 'friends' to think I'm fucked up.. |

This is a good thread. I agree, some metal vocals I can't bear, but then the same band turns around and does one of the best songs I could ever hear. For example, Opeth. When he's destroying his vocal chords, I mean, it sounds cool and all, and the guitars are amazing, but I can't understand what the hell he's say. Then he turns around and does some of the most beautiful vocals ever. I think every artist and band has they're ups and downs. I'm not going to like every song by every band, but I may like a song from a band I would have normally hated until I heard another song. I dont really hate bands much anymore, it just takes me a long time to get into them. There's so many bands out there that it's hard to like them all, but that doesnt mean I have to hate all their music. |

Nah, disco didn't end so abruptly... and rap didn't actually start because of disco. Rap started because of cut breakbeats from songs which occured at parties in New York. Both genres (hip hop and disco) were influences by funk though... but you're wrong in thinking rap started as a follow up to disco I'm afraid. |

Rap started at the very end of the 70s. Rapper's Delight by The Sugarhill Gang is often credited as being the first hip hop song, and I think it was released in 1979. Disco left mainstream popularity at around that time, although the two genres are not connected, except for their roots being in funk/soul. |
