whats the point of pedals

whats the point of having a distortion pedal if ur amp alrdy has distortion?? and wuts the point of having an overdrive pedal if ur amp is alrdy a tube?


if u use a distortion pedal and u alrdy have so muc hdist on ur amp will u make ur guitar tone suck and same thing for the overdrive pedal on a overdriven tube?

okay, the point of using a distortion pedal in addition to your amp is that you can easily stomp the effect on or off. The other part of that is that with Tube amps you don't get sick drive until your up the volume scale. If you're trying to practice quietly (hard to believe anyone would want to) you're best off with a stomp box.

The other deal is that if you double (or triple) up on the distortion you can get some very different tones. Every box is going to produce a little different sound/waveform.

Still you can get a footswitch, I guess that's wts it's called I forget, which also can help u stomp the effect on and off using ur amp effect, but your amp must have jacks for that and some amp doesn't support it. There are a wide varity of different effect that u can find in pedals, but also sometimes pedals aren't only used for effects only.

right. my amp has some distortion effects but i have to twist a knob and readjust the gain and volume to switch between a clean acoustic sound and a distorted metal sound. the whole process takes maybe 15-30 seconds to switch from one sound to a different sound that i want. i could imagine an audience getting tired of this if i were playing on a stage...

i have a line 6 with distortion and i have a ds-1 boss distortion pedal and it sounded cool then got annoyed of it ..

why would u need more distortion then a line 6 has?

lol I once read that Dime would hook up 3 distortion pedals in a row just to get that chunky sound he was looking for, so sometimes you need more than most

I use distortion pedal to switch between clean/OD.

You can also hook up different effects(wah, flanger, echo, etc) and easily switch on/off

If your amp has these already, you can get a better deeper tone.

exactly my amp has flanger, reverb, chorus, and even tremolo effects but you still have to bend down and twist a knob to select them...

there are many reason for or not to have pedals and not just because you can turn then of and on with a foot switch(really silly if you ask me but a practical choice if you think about it but not the major reason). also a distortion pedal, distorts the signal it gets form the guitar, while an overdrive pedal does just what it says it ups the amps(?) of the signal from the guitar causing the amplifier to distort or in other word it overdrive the amp's speakers

when i first read this i got all excited thinking we were going to talk about pedal tones, but just gear talk :(

Is there no jack in the back of your amp for a stompbox?

Pedals are made to give you exactly the sound you want.

Hmm, every stompbox ive seen plugs from the guitar to the box to the "guitar" plug.

I think he means an effects loop, for Time FX mainly though, all I've ever done is plug into my pedals and then into the amp.

He's talking about a "footswitch". My amp came with one to control the tremolo and reverb. It just plugs in with a quarter inch. However, i almost never use it.
