Here's the deal. I have some friends who recorded an album (on tape) in the 80's and want to realease it for sale online. I have copied it to digital media and I'm ready to release it, but first I would like to understand the minds of people who purchase music today. So......................
1) when you buy music where do you buy it? Stores or Internet.
2) when you buy online where do you buy it?
3) where do you hear about new songs? Radio, friends, online?
4) if you listen to music online where do you go? (give hyperlink please)
5) if you were going to sell your music online how would you go about it?
6) if you wanted to get the word out about your music how would you do it online? where?
I need to have some insight on these topics to pass on to my musician friends and you guys are the perfect group to ask.
Take your time answering and try to answer as many of these questions as possible.
Thanks very much for any ideas and information.

The younguns have come to your aid!
1) I would have to says primarily over the internet via places like "Amazon" but quite a few of my friends like to use Itunes for their music.
3) If you were to advertise, places like Myspace are a good start. Also radio is a good idea too! that way you get a broader audience.
4) I'm quite cheeky and use a program called limewire but youtube is good for music and just like the previous answer Myspace allows you to upload the bands music or what have you.
5) Probably via paypal and itunes, buti dont really have much experience with those.
I think that answers most of them for me, but the is an infinite way to do things like this! |

definitely go with youtube largest amount of viewers and your linked to other videos.
hear about music from all over the place so I'm no help there
i like many others don't buy music unless there independent and/or have meet them/are alive and still doing it(side note one of my biggest issues with copyright is people getting the money for things that ain't theirs just because they bought the rights **cough** Micheal Jackson **cough**
selling I'm not to sure how to get into things like itunes and such but I'd, to start off with anyway, make a website for the band and sell hard cds and digital albums/songs and link that web site to all the profiles on youtube, myspace, ect.
for the radio i don't know the capes radio stations or how they work
but any publicity is good so if you can get it go for it.
but most importantly make sure you go where this music is wanted and will be seen if you just posted some random purevolume profile no ones going to care or see it that whats good about youtube the videos are link together. on that note be smart on what you name the videos so they will get the most hits. hell it might be worth it to post one or two silly video ( for example wicked fast shredding) just to get some links then form there the people will see the real stuff and hopefully like it.
but like jcb said there are millions of ways to do this stuff and more keep popping up all the time it really is a new frontier the rules are far from written. |

I buy all of my cd's from the net simply because there is nowhere to get good music where I live. Wal-Mart is about it. I would go with myspace to advertise and maybe see if the admin will let you put a small ad on this site to direct people to your myspace page. You know just something small that everyone can see without being logged in. |

When I buy music, I buy it from f.y.e. or Best Buy. I usually hear about it from friends. |

1) I buy it from either store or internet. Usually if it's local band or a band I really like, I will buy the CD. If it's a band I kind of like, I'll buy it online. If it's a band I am interested in but don't know a lot about, I'll download it for free.
2) Usually iTunes if I purchase. If I free download, then rapidshare or megaupload.
3) Radio sometimes, but mostly friends and internet.
4) youtube.com or pandora.com
5) not sure
6) probably myspace and on forums and community sites (such as this) |

Okay Phip! :)
When I buy a CD it's usually online if I'm after an artist or a song in particular. Or if I want to just find anything I think will be interesting I love strolling along music sections in shops and looking through albums.
When I buy online I about always go on amazon.com, the only time I don't seems to be when I'm after a special edition album I can't get on any website (eg, when I got an autographed album of 'It's America' by Roney Atkins I went on his online store to get it.)
I hear about new songs mostly online on MySpace music accounts. Then next of all I usually hear about them on the radio.
And if I were trying to get my music aross to people again I'd sign up for a MySpace Music account, upload my songs and try to comment on popular music pages asking for them to check out my songs. That way, if they don't (which you shouldn't expect from some) I could get some of their fans snooping on my page.
Good luck, that's all I know so I hope it helped. |
