Robert Plant's own explanation of the lyrics was that " it was some cynical aside about a woman getting everything she wanted all the time without giving back any thought or consideration."
He is also mentioned that lyrics of the song reflects parts of the book called "Magic Arts in Celtic Britain"

Yeah I don't see Rob as much as I used to cuz I'm away @ uni these days, but when I was @ home I generally saw him at least once a week. He's a really cool guy!
I can't image what it would be like to see Robert Plant on a regular basis. I mean, he's just a human like all of the rest of us, but considering the body of work behind him... It's just insane to think about he's been playing music longer then some of us have been alive.

Something tells me it's not about drugs. I see more of what Emp posted. It also appears to me that there are some (fairly vague) references to the Lord of the Rings. In particular, the "When I look to the West and my spirit is crying for leaving." It sounds a lot like Tolkien's elves who always have a yearning for the western sea. The smoke rings and "those who stand long" parts also seem to be in the same group with me.
i dont buy into that backwards playing stuff. its open to suggestion. if someone would have flashed benign lyrics instead of satan, it would have sounded like they were saying whatever was being suggested.
yeah, led zeppelin is too mucho into the lord of the rings to my thought.. ramble on seems to me a clear reference. for those who read the books of tlotr and the hobbit.. you can see clearly how tolkien was just starting to write and when he became more mature at it

I think it's really cool that they are/were into Lord of the Rings. It's a great match for the mysticism and escapism that much of their music is about.
In addition, the difference between the narrative styles of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings is intentional. The Hobbit was essentially intended to be a "children's" book, whereas the latter was aimed at an older audience. The Silmarillion, much of which was written before The Hobbit, contains an almost textbook like style of writing.
