hi, i come to you on a very serious note. when i first started playing guitar, like the first time id pick it up to a couple months or so, when i went to a guitar shop, thered be the awsome indescribible smell that id have. it really was like a high to the brain. i dont have that anymore. it was such a great feeling, i got it a couple other times, but its just fantastic. when i was trying to figure out a song, especially stairway to heaven, this feeling would come, this insane indescribable feeling and smell, of guitars, anyway, i dont have that anymore, anyone have this feeling? i feel like an idiot right now, but i really miss it, just a really great smell/feeling, now that i play i think i look at music differently. and the feeling is gone. well anyway tell me if you guys ever had it before and whatever b/c i miss it, its such a great feeling, id think of excuses just to go to sam ash or some music store just to smell it. im gona write a song about it. but yeah.

Sure.

As musicians, we sometimes just get bored with it. We lose that certain "I don't know what".

Haha, I know what you mean. It's not so much a smell to me, but more of a tingling feeling. I think it is a feeling of possibilities, of things that you can do. Simply playing used to give me that feeling.

I don't get it so much anymore, but I think it is more common when you are first starting, since there are so many new things to learn. I get it mostly when I am trying something new, and I finally nail it. The feeling is sweeter if it is a thing that I really struggled to get down, since I had to fight for it.

It is a great feeling. :D

You sure its not writer's block? Sometimes when I get that it really brings me down, and music kind of loses that mystique for a while. I'd say try something new, but that you've heard is REALLY good. A new band, a ew style of playing, some new lyrical stuff. Anything to make you inspired.

its both for me, smell in a music store or by any guitar, along with a feelling, an indescribable joy or feeling. yeh i get it when i start things also, but when i started guitar, it was just insane. like id quit guitar and learn it over just to get it again. i lost it when i was playing about 3 or 4 months or so. and miss it so.

I think what you and GRX are feeling is either a sense of accomplishment or curiosity.

nah... it was a feeling, i get it i guess when i try somthing new, kinda when i started to just play a few songs i liked on piano, or w/e but NOTHING even close to what it was in guitar or hearing that music. just beautiful. soo writing a song about it.

i acctually feel that about a lot of things, the first time i listened to a song, or skiing, its just an indescribable joy, but with guitars it was different, like i coulda just spent my life sitting in there listening to the music i listen to, and if that feeling had stayed, id be happy.

I Know exactly what you are saying. My friend from the music shop called me today to let me know they just got a used Gibson Les Paul in on trade. I just got back from the shop and it was the first time in a while that I got that feeling. The guitar was flawless, sounded great with a cherry sunburst finish. He said he would hold it until I get my Tax return.

sweet.but its not only like the joy of getting somthing new, i mean mix that feeling with lets say over the hills and far away, especially the end, with the feeling of starting somthing new, the feeling of complete unknowing to somthing you know you will love, with the happiest thing in your life, and the best smell ever, and you get what i felt going to a music shop. i was in a world of my own. just complete bliss. it was beautiful. i just hope i can get it back.

@lp: nows the time to buy, with the economy as bad as it is. when i get the money im gona be buyin myself a gibson les paul i know it will go up in value or stay the same as the economy rises and i know ill play it.

I get it as a burst of excitement rather than smell.

You just need to find the things you want to do on guitar. Naturally playing guitar is going to take a lot of work, and it's not always going to be fun and games but keep at it and see where it takes you.

It's called "THE BUZZ". Music is like a drug, it can take you to different places in your mind.

Hehe, sounds like Guitar Center. But at GC, they keep the expensive guitars behind the counter, up high on hangars, so I can't get at them :P

I don't know if you would know this, but isn't there a street in the UK (London I think), where there's just loads of music shops? Like one right after another? If I'm not imagining that, I think that it would be a great place!

Dude, happened to me when I first picked up a guitar
And, even though Im 7 years into it I got it again when I started picking up soloing (you see, Ive been a fingerpicker all these years)
Its incredible

What I recommend:
Try learning a new style
Or, if you dont want to, take a break or stop learning stuff by the book, just play around with it

i dont know how it was on you guys but man, its incredible, maybe its from just doing somthing new, but i think that you have to love it. deep down or somthing know that your gona love it and always do it. i guess for me only 2 things that that may ever happen on is guitar and a girl. maybe playing giggs or somthing, but what i felt in those stores is just insane, i did some kinda search or somthing, it may have been the cause of endorphins being released into the brain, causing massive happyness and a high. very cool.

Yeah I usually get that feeling still evenif I get new instrumentle gear of any sort or if I learn something new about guitar and start being able to play a song really well after practiceing hard. I like it, whenever I'm in town centres I'll make up something like 'I think I need new plectrum# or something silly like that just to get te nice satisfying smell of new equipment. I don't know it just makes me feel good.

My advice? Stop playing whatever you're playing now, and play something different. Looking for a different band is a good way to start.

Hey EMB, why don't you write a song about it? Kind of like Tenacious D "Tribute". Could be pretty cool man!

That and just mess around, go back a few steps if it's not fun anymore, recap until it's a piece of cake... (mmmmmm cake)...

Make jokes about it, find something to make it fun again. You should see the lyrics I wrote when I lost my touch... *shudder* BUT it worked! So give it a go!

I'd go back and learn your first chords you ever learned again, straight from the book. I did it, ended up getting some really good riffs and progressions and it actually affected my overall technique I'd say.

I get that in town a lot. Some of the best times in my younger childhood was with my uncle...in town. So whenever I smell cigarettes and gasoline burning it's like euphoria.

Yeah I know that tingling down your spine, and shivers your bone, you get the chills...then splat! No jk that was terrible...um...anywho I use to get chills when I listened to steve vai play, mainly thinking of what it would be like seeing him live. Well I saw him live finally and now that feeling is gone. However whenever a new guitarist or band comes up I think of seeing them in concert and feel a euphoria almost like when I "puff-puff"...anyways ha...
