How many people here can sing and play guitar at the same time?
I tried this a few times but a few problems
1 - I cant sing
2 - The timing is tough and to get the rythm. |

I can, but I could definitely be better.
I think a better question is who can sing and play LEAD at the same time. |

i can play rhythm and sing, and if the lead is simple and repetitive, i can sing through that too. |

The only song I can sing (well) and play to is Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton |

I have trouble singing and playing because usually my rhythms and chords tend towards being more complex. Usually if the words fit well into the rhythm and the notes that I'm playing I can do it, otherwise it's an uphill battle. |

Depends on what the lead is on guitar, but I'm not half bad, performed a number of times doing that.
A legend lead player and vocalist is Muhamid from Necrophagist (Death Metal) Not everyone's thing, but I'm so impressed with his immense playing ontop of his vocals. |

Biologically impossible to do both well at the same time! If you're concentrating on the vocals, your guitar playing will be on auto-pilot and vice-versa. You can only actually concentrate on one thing at a time, and if you don't believe me, ask any psychologist.
Check out Hendrix, if he's singing he's playing rhythm, when he inserts a break he stops singing. |

Yeah, I picked up on that pretty quickly with Hendrix. Another trick he uses is singing along with the guitar lead (ie. Voodoo Child). |

Not really Deefa, it just takes more practice, and patience. Works fine with me, and you can check out my reference in my previous comment. |

With respect JM, I find it impossible to differentiate between vocal capabilities and belching in the example you have cited. Anyway, I still maintain that whatever he is doing in the u-tube clip I've just watched, he will be in some way 'splitting' or 'separating' his attention in order to appear to be 'multi-tasking' in much the same way as a computer does when it runs two pieces of software at the same time. |

it doesn't matter if something is on auto-pilot.
if you practice doing it enough, you will be able to play a piece - even a lead - perfectly on autopilot. or be able to sing perfectly on autopilot.
for that matter, you can do both on autopilot at the same time.
a performing band is most likely going on auto on all levels, if they've practiced enough. unless they are improvising. they're attention can then be devoted to stage presence. |

Unfortunately I don't have any video recording equipment to show real proof that it's possible to sing and play lead at the same time. If I was to record audio, I have no real proof that I did it at the same time.
Did think the word belching was hilarious for Necrophagist. I thought near enough the same when I first heard them.
I'm sure you'll be able to do it anyway, just have the ambition and will to push yourself past what you thought was possible, and with that, you can do wonders.
It's down to breaking that wall of "I can't do it" in anyway possible. It's definitely possible to break it, you just need to have the mental strength to destroy those fake limits. |

Huh? Chill man, there's no threat here. What's your point with me being a teenager? I'm learning and I'm proud of it. I'm grateful I'm young and I'm going to use my youth to shove as much information in my brain as I desire. I enjoy pushing my limits, therefore, my previous comment speaks of experience. I was merely encouraging you to try it out. |

its probly hard to actually sing well and play guitar at once, but if the point is to have a growl type voice, it doesnt really matter if it sounds good lol |

@ JM:-
My point is, I can't be bothered to argue! I've heard it all a million times before from a thousand 'wannabe' guitar Gods. Get back to me in ten years time and tell me what's going on in your life.
To my older and wiser friends on the site, please accept my most sincere apologies. I'm bowing out now because I don't like the turn this site's been taking over the past few months. Too many 'gob-shites' and 'great Iams' for my taste! Farewell and may which ever God you support go with you. |

If you're still on here in ten years time, I'll be sure to jam with you sometime.
I realise you have a different opinion. I have no intention of changing that. I'd also like to think you'd stick around, this place is pretty helpful. People are friendly and full of helpful ideas.
You'll also find pleanty of 'gob-shites' and so on where ever you go.
But I think the good thing about this place is that people aren't afraid to voice their opinion. |

@deefa,
Don't go away deefa! This site is constantly in a state of flux. We need variety and by the way you are not alone it's just that some members are a bit more "vocal". Stick around.

"Dang it why do all the good people leave? It's turning us into UG.com" I've been gone a while, does that mean that was also aimed at me? :P |

I have to agree that you can't, take Iron Maden Number of the Beast I can play it and I can sing it but not at the same time, its impossible ,but there are simple songs that it can be done on, dont ask me which songs I stay away from them. |

@ Heather,
No, I dont' think that was aimed at you. there is a "old guard" here that has been absent for some time (before you got here). One by one they have shown up much less. Things change but maybe they'll pop in again. I miss them and i'll miss Deefa if he doesn't come back. It's been a weird summer here on the forum.

P.S. could be they are out trading in their SUV's cause you scared the crap out of 'em! JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!!! |

I can sing and play only with the simplest of songs but I'm a beginner and most of my effort is on playing correctly so it's hard to do both at the same time. Maybe when i get a bit more competent with the guitar it will fall into place. |

Not everyone can though.
It does also depend on how early you practice the two together. If you just play guitar for years it'll be a lot harder to play both of them together. Basically the mind is already ingrained to focus on that one thing you're doing, it's too much of a challenge. |
