Opinion of Ephiphone SG Custom?

Hey All,

Any one have one or played an Epiphone SG Custom? I've been thinking of tradeing my Strat and chatted a little with a guy on craigs list.

that is one sexy guitar bro. I played around with a couple before, and the neck is really the big difference. Going from a basic size Strat neck to that really caught me off guard at first. See if you can demo it and see if you like the feel of it or not. personally after getting used to the neck, I really liked the feel of the guitar, and I speak for epi sg's in general.

I played it when I was buying my guitar, Its darn cool looking and sounds good, quite thick sounding. But I didnt like the look as much as I like SG cherry, but choice was hard.

Well I'm now a proud owner of the Epiphone SG g-400 custom. It's really pretty odd but i think i'll like it.

That's my guitar and my proud baby :D it's amazing for near enough any style and the neck is brilliant. I'm grateful for it's shape, sets a great challenge to those new positions you're not used to.

Even though my comment is not necessary, I felt like sharing. :)

Had a little play on one a couple of weeks back. Very impressive. The only draw back for me is the rounded neck makes my thumb ache quite badly after a while. That's why I went back to Strat shaped guitars. If I ever get an SG it'll have to be a '61 re-issue with the thin neck.

I had some traders remorse at first but after playing her for a few day's I think i really like it. some of the weirdness with this guitar.

It's got 3 pickups and 3 volume and 1 tone. so the middle pickup is alway's on unless you turn down the volume.

I really like the neck, it works well for my hands and sausage like fingers. I'm finding that the higher notes are easier to play mainly because I don't feel all crowed. It's nice to have so much of the neck opened up. The neck widens some too where it meats the body, very nice and easy guitar to play.

The action is really low and the pickups are right there I'm finding that using a pick I'm hitting that middle pickup a lot and making a scratching noise. I could see how this could be annoying but I'll find a way around it.

The pickup's are are a little dark, and may look at tweaking that in the future. Over all I'm very happy with her.

Yeah. I found the same problem with that middle pickup when I played it. Unlike a strat with its single coils, those 3 'buckers crowded together in that manner don't give you any room for picking. The only thing I can suggest is to hold your pick in a way that exposes less of its area. In that way there will be less pick moving around under the strings (I understand that that is the way the really fast guitarists hold a pick anyway!)

I would take an SG over a strat anyday. SG's not only play better, but sound better as well...my own opinion of course. But if you are torn between the two, I should urge you to check out a Fender showmaster. It is basically a strat on steroids. Really brilliant guitars. Two humbuckers and great playability and tone.

That Strat sounds similar to the HH Strat I owned a couple of years back. Instead of the usual 3 sc's it sported 2 splitable 'buckers (a side-winder at the neck and a black cobra at the bridge if I remember it right). knock out sound with either p/up configuration but I have to agree with you, once I'd played a gibbo (Les Paul in my case) the strat had to go.
But then I discovered G&L and now nothing else gets a look in!

speaking of which, my dad's uncle owns a vintage 1961 SG w/ vibrato(bigsby) tailpiece in mint condition...

That'll be worth a bob or two now. Just as a matter of interest, has he had the opportunity to compare his original with the '61 reissue? I'd love to know just how 'authentic' the re-issue is!
