Who would have thought that the legend of Woodstock would live on like it has! I remember wanting to go, but alas; no gas money or reliable ride to put the gas in! haha I was 16 at the time. But as it was going on and the days following Woodstock we all knew then that something epic had happened and I wished like hell I had gone. You listen to the songs and artists from the soundtrack and try to imagine that those songs were fresh on the radio when I was in high school. Exciting times! And also nothing has changed. Just like today there were debates over who was great and who sucked (can you imagine thinking Jimi was just a lot of random noise?). Most of the footage you see from Woodstock I can assure you was happening not just there but all across the western world. I was there, it was great (except the Vietnam war) and it was ALIVE with energy and promise! It's so very hard to explain how much we wanted EVERYTHING to change; equality, freedom, Man's endless thirst for war, social values and the environment (even then). Well, we got off to a pretty exciting start and then found out if you want to survive you need MONEY and to get that you needed to play the game by the rules set down by those who had it. Soooooo poof; game over! Still there is a fascination with the whole experiment even today. Maybe you younguns can make an impact in your own way. Good luck with that! :)

Well, did everything change? At that time whole world was changing and morphing to state close we know today... but one thing didnt, thirst for war...so sad. Music was changing with all the pioneers of that time, music had a room to change and had a more borders to break than these days, so setup for the Woodstock legend couldnt been better.

Anyway I think it is and was biggest one event that changed world, but more other way than musically. Better way or no, im not actually sure.

Cheers!

Now before you all get to thinking that we were all sitting around listening to Janis and Jimi all day long take a look at this music survey (incomplete) for this week in 1969. I thought it is very interesting. It is quite a mixed bag. If you turned on the radio in the car this is what you were hearing. A little history; for the most part radio was "top 40" (a mix). We didn't have a large choice of specific stations like you do now (the hip hop station, country station, death metal station, classic rock etc). Some staions were "hipper" than others but this survey is from WABC in New York, perhaps the biggest "top 40" station in the country. You'd have to go and find these songs and take a listen to get a feel for what was on the air at the time but maybe just looking at the names will give you a clue. I must say I was surprised when i looked at this list.....Memory is selective for sure!

I often think about that. One would have to wonder if the WWII generation with the swing bands and crooners of the day (excellent music and musicians btw) would have guessed that Rock was just around the corner.
Something is always just over the horizon and though we sometimes think that generational music has lost it's "edge" and talented musicians I'd advise you to keep your ears open. This new generation is going to find something to say and a new way to say it! (they always do!)

Yeah I agree that Edge is never lost and new waves in music born and die, but I believe that even so vast that music is, it have its rules, and within these rules almost everything is used twice. (yeah I know that somebody will sure jump on me fling his/hers finger that Its not true)

Now, I believe that in music, mixing genres and producing new sounds are only way to create something revolutionary new to born. Also change in soundscenes and sounds are the key that will help to that goal. (oh my god, now I know that all the "gear purists" will cut my throat for that xD)

woodstock was pointless hippies need to realize that you can't have a society that just smokes weed all the time and have peace all the time it would be nice if it could be like that but it just isn't. But Richie Haven was really good i thought

before woodstock rock music wasnt mainstream. woodstock was the begginning and in a way the end of something. it wasnt just hippies and weed. it industrialized rock music, it was a proof that a generation could unite peacefully for a cause. a never done before and never will. that was the begginin of lucrative use of rock

Describing anything as "pointless" is, well, pointless. We do things for two general reasons: to survive and to experience joy. Doing something for your survival, such as eating, is surely "pointless" as you will, undoubtedly, die. Now, since you will surely die, why even try to experience joy or pleasure? It will not amass into anything tangible. Considering that my life no longer has a meaning and is entirely, utterly, and irrevocably pointless, I will just go die.

All things are pointless or nothing is pointless.

well, I think patleh made a valid point about that we will never have an all peaceful society, just not in the most user friendly sense.
My take on it, humans and their nature are a violent race, just naturally. This is how we've made it past the other types of species to the top of the food chain and have survived for so long. And think about when something happens that makes you angry, well, when that happens to the 'higher-ups'(govt. boys) they really might overreact and thus military coup's and such are abundant when world leaders don't like each other. so while world peace is always a nice goal to try to obtain, its probably not going to happen just due to man's flaw called anger. Russia gets upset with US, US builds warheads, Russia builds more warheads, Russia plants them in Cuba, US plants warheads in small eastern European country, both realize they have check mate on each other for placement, Kennedy acts, Krhuschrhev(spelling?) follows suit, onward with the lazy war!
Basically its like the jealous neighbor kid syndrome with the cold war, we had nuclear warheads, they wanted them too, they built them using our plans, and then that really set off the above plot.
Now that I have gone so far off topic I'm waving at Shatner and the USS Enterprise, humans couldn't live peacefully for too long without global meltdown, you know, like the Fallout video game plot, global catastrophe.
OR
a very peaceful society is doomed to be overrun in minutes... lack of military. And yes, a peaceful society would not have any military, that would not be peaceful. Thousands of years humans the civilizations they have started have needed frequent military use, really just to stay afloat in the hectic warring times.
Why can't I write like this for school papers? lol

you can't have peace because of people like hitler, stalin, hussein, binladen, they tried to be peaceful with hitler and we saw how that ended up so yeah you can't have peace. But Woddstock was all about getting high which there is nothing wrong with it's just that people can't do it all the time.

you guys are putting to much thought into Woodstock it was just a show, Just a show. you take away Woodstock does that mean Jimi would just vanish from all history in a poof of smoke NO. If anything change it would of change in the exact same way with or with out Woodstock.

@Phip someone actually telling the truth and saying they didn't go!!!I can't believe it. :)

@emp emp emp look around you all the rules of this world are being rewritten as we speak music as well. look up guys like philip glass and steve reich and your just hitting the tip of a ice burg(only 10% shows). and your right about no borders to be broking, as john cage said the generation before destroy all the walls that where left and he and peers set out to make the bricks and it's time to rebuild. Pop music(folk) reflects classical and classical reflects pop. i forget where I'm getting that I'm thinking Stravinsky.

i think peace is unatainable now because of the way peoples minds are now and the garbage theyre filled with. think of back in the stone age or long back, people killed for survival. and as crunch said theyd die without that. now honestly, people kill for joy. video killing games, government with waars spending billions and billions on better ways to blow up the human body? comon. id love peace, but that would give us nothing to do! (sarcasm.)

and im not saying be peaceful with hitler lol im saying be peaceful as a race, as in why cant everyone be peaceful. but tht wont happen.

well, due to the killing for survival instinct that has been with us all our existence, eventually a peaceful time will erupt into a warring time. While people may think that video games like Call of Duty or Halo are bad for people to play, it subconciously stimulates the more primal part of the mind. People love violence deep down, its just something that has become more of a need than a necessity, though modern day society forgets this. Violent video games are not good for children in that it may overdevelop that sense of need for violence, thus you have more angry children than normal, but, for teens(16+) and adults, it somehow manages to have a calming effect whilst watching these events unfold on a tv screen. We are a violent species, how else would the UFC or boxing ever exist. People like the violence, though it has toned down since the Romans invented public killings for sport.

Which leads me to say that because out of our need to kill back in the ancient times(cromagnons and such), it has really become a part of the human psyche, a part of us that needs to be fed. Much like guitar players want to play their guitar pretty much everyday, the mind has that subconcious need to see violence. Even if you are considered a peaceful person, you may find yourself enjoying playing violent games or watching (American) Football, maybe boxing gets it done, whatever the case society fixates on watching other people get beat to a pulp; while they themselves frown upon any fighting outside these types of sports. I played football my freshman year and it is a pretty nasty thing, but, I found myself less jumpy to want to kill the annoying kid in the class though it did almost happen, but thats a different story ;)
so in short, society needs to have their urges met, whether it be sexual or violent, and that is why peace isn't really going to a fully attainable part of society. Violence is in human nature, and thats not going to change tomorrow, it may never change.

@crunch
I like the philosophical touch there, pretty awesome :)

Hahahaha YOUZ GUYZ!
I have to admit that my first thoughts were with you guys 100%.
But the dude is entitled to his opinion. I feel that sometimes Pat's opinions are a bit rash, based on short video clips he saw on TV or something he read once.
Pat if you think the whole 60's movement was about getting stoned you are dead wrong. Read a bit more about it and then form an opinion.
I don't agree with you half the time.
the other half of the time i absolutely don't agree with you! LOL
Most of the time I get the feeling you are just trying to stir things up.
A Person ought to have the right to voice his opinions on this forum and a person ought to have the right to oppose that opinion on this forum.
But if this is again an attempt to instigate bad vibes just so you can get your kicks.................

FEED HIM TO THE VOLCANO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the 60s was def more then drugs, ( nd throwing people in volcanos lol) to my understanding, people were united for a just cause. against the goverenmt. much more freedoms, one being drugs, nativity which i feel shouldnt be looked on as disgusting. for g@ds sake its the human natural body. why cover it with 5 layers of clothes (well cept when skiing but ive been know to skii topless :)) anyway to be united and free and love like that is somthing that will NEVER happen again. and i missed it. honestly if theres anything i could have 1 wish, its to go to '68. at the age im at now. ok mayeb '67 at 14 but still. ok '66 at 13. * it just put me back at birth in '53 or '52 tht works fine. but im being honest here. not only the music. everything seemed right back then, not in terms of politics but in beliefs. ik theres always people with damagd beliefs but to stand up for a cause tht u feel is just and everything is so much harder now. i mean everything. the protesting in front of the white house, swimming in the lake there (lol) the san fran ** rights movment( yes i believe that **s are people too. and they are last time i checked. i cut one in hlf and counted the rings. no wires there. just 2 lungs, pancreas, yes even a heart and brain) and now i feel everything is controlled by money, government and yes RELIGION, shoot me if you dare, for i only to hope to come back being born in '52 or '53. but all 3 of those +more is cause for prob 99% of the worlds problems. and frankly im sick of it. if i thought people had minds and hearts now id lead a protest right up to the white house of it all. not to tax the wealthy more, but to not let money control or corrupt. wow i went off a bit there. \

POINT: 60s 70s and yes even the 80s were awsome. however id prob cry a lot in the 80s bc thts when a lot of the modern ** started.

anyway thts about 5% of me. meet me in real life. i get very mad about it all.
