What do you use to record ?

How do you guys record your music if you do?

I am currently using Garageband and recording through the microphone. I'd like to know if there are are any ways to get clearer sounds like maybe a direct line into the computer or something?

I record with a PC using Cubase SX3 through an EMU 0404 PCI card. I have a little Peavey 6 Channel mixer, and a johnson j-station and a Vox AC 30 amp to record. I do also have a mike but i like to direct record when i can.

I pretty much record very little but get distracted by the pretty lights....

I have a bunch of quick ideas recorded on my phone, but I have never really recorded myself playing a song all the way through before

I am using Garageband as well since it came with my computer, and the built in mic on my comp as well. It works ok but it is not always very clear.

I am also having a hard time getting my recordings onto a site to host them. I was finally able to convert my recording to a 4 MB or so mp3, but I have tried 3 file/music sharing sites, and it doesn't work on any of them. It's pissin' me off! (One of these sites said the file had to be 44.1 kHz or something, which it was not, so this could be the problem. I don't know how to fix though).

I'll probably just start video taping myself playing and putting it on youtube, or figuring out a DI kind of thing, or maybe even trying a new program. I think a new mic might be a quick fix though.

Depends on what I'm recording really. But mainly Cubase SX 3. Then occasionally Audacity when I want to do something quick.

GRX, have you tried myspace? That place isn't half bad.

I Use Garageband also but I use a line 6 POD XT as my audio interface. It works pretty good.

I use PC with m-audio soundcard and cubase SX 3. I have POD or Zoom G1X connected to soundcard. For keyboards I have Roland PC-180A midi keyboard and many virtual instruments (VSTi). For mastering I use T-racks. For vocals i have couple quite reqular microphones.

Can anyone recommend a good "cheap" or free VST compressor for bass?

Sorry, the ones I got I had to pay for and it came with a load of others. There are sites which pirate them though if you want to take a look at those before you buy it.

Well, tele. this is not a cheap, but this is the best for every vst bass demands, but Im sure you can find it cheaper if you know where to look :).

But i think every "compressor" work sameway to bass and another instruments, if you know how compressor work? Im sure you do. So its a same what compressor you use.

I use a Zoom H4 and upload it to Audacity because I cant get Cubase LE to work right.

last thing i used to record was thru my RP pedal. im probably gonna get a Stealthplug soon though

hey is garageband compatible with pcs?

I don't think there's a PC version, but there may be. I've heard that MicroSoft is coming out with an equivalent program very similar to it called Monaco, but that could just be a rumor.

There are some video on YouTube about how to get it on PC, but I'm not sure if they work or not.

no, Reaper i think it a great program for the little money, and if you don't mind being harassed you can use if for free. check out crystal audio or something like that and n-track both are free and pretty good

Is it worth it? Anything other than this which is cheaper or better quality?

We used that when we tested our band recordings, I dont got fascinated by its effects, when you record, then you must convert the file which is very very slow. User interface or usability was little confusing.

It does its job, but I didnt was satisfied to it. Anyway, I think it is one of the cheapest recorders and it might be good choice for record some home stuff, but I personally have little doubts of it.

The only recording I do is at school to be honest. there i get to use a mac pro with logic pro, AKG 414s, SM57s, so some pretty good stuff.

I use protools with my M-box as an audio interface.

Logic Express through a Firebox. Definitely use an audio interface of some kind to get the best sound.

I use rubbish mixcraft 3 :( but i prefer to use video cameras i find them easier to perform with :P

i didnt wanted to create another topic coz is related to this...but how can i do some sequences for drums and bass??? of course i dont have the instruments...so i would like to make them in a program and it must sound good and be not so hard to work with

First, I suggest you to choose your sequencer carefully, support for VST is a must imo. Good free software could be http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/
If you want quality, get cubase.

Then learn how to use VST instruments and you will find huge amount of free drum machines and usefull effects and other instruments on this site: http://www.kvraudio.com/

Same thing works for bass too. If you need some help with VST stuff feel free to pm me.

If drum machines are not good enough, I suggest some of those VST samplers. There u can get or even rip sound from somewhere and use them to your sequence.
