Yup. Unfortunately, whiny little white kids from the suburbs have taken Emo, and raped what it meant. Why? To fit in with the latest (and dumbest) trend. |

i like emo because the kids have found a way to do next to nothing in exchange for lots of sex, drugs, and fun. brilliant, absolutely brilliant. genius, really. |

I put NIN in as in "Industrial" music. NIN was around before Emo was ever coined. I don't mind emo but I have trouble differentiating one band from another. Trent R. is unbelievably talented by the way (vox, lead, bass, keyboard, drums).
I always liked rap too. I can see your points, but if you ever give Twista a chance (especially some of his early stuff) he's rapping @ ~120 words a minute and everything is pretty clear. Most new rap does suck though.
I've always held disdain for country music. |

Like foogered, I usually like music that would, if personified, be like me. Led Zeppelin: I enjoy partying, I enjoy sex... I enjoy the occult? Radiohead: Most of the time I don't say a whole lot, but tend to be "contemplative" (I've had lots of people call me that, which is weird). A lot of people would consider Radiohead to be something like Smart Rock, which I really dig (the music, not the title).
I also like to listen to music based on my current mental or emotional state. Right now I've been listening to Videotape by Radiohead for the last half hour because of how "sad" it is. A close friend of mine died two nights ago in a traffic accident, and I've tried to listen to music to help me feel better (what I normally do) and happy songs make me feel like I'm going to puke. Hopefully I don't sound emo or... I don't know, self-pitying. Hell, I don't know if it's right to talk about that in this sense. I'm sure Chris wouldn't care, so that helps. |

Crunch, I'm sorry to hear that... It's a tough thing to deal with (especially the first time you lose a friend). And if Radiohead helps you through this, all the better.
At least you are not so uncomfortable w/ death that you use inappropriate dark humor as a defense mechanism. |

don't know. Idon't really hate any genre of music. I might prefer some genres to others and I might strongly dislike some particular bands, but I kind of realised that I can find something to listen to and learn from in pretty much any genre of music. With some genres one just has to dig deeper to get to the good stuff.

erm, not really.Phrase Emo/emocore(short for emotional hardcore) was coined in the mid to late 80s. It was just used to describe different kind of music back then and wasn't abused by the mainstream media yet. Since you're from Chicago you might remember local bands like Cap'n Jazz or early Joan of Arc.Now that's how emo sounded in the early 90s.:) Or you might have heard of a second wave emo band Braid from Champaign, Ill(my geography isn't what it used to be, but I'm pretty sure that should be somewhere near Chicago area :P ). I heard they enjoyed some minor success on a national level before they broke up in the late 90s. |

Crunch i know how you feel. one of my best friends died and then same week my cousin passed away. i just didnt know what to do with myself but listening to some music help quite a bit :) just dont go onto the sad stuff. doesnt lead you anywhere good. and baud you stupid SOB, that highly insensitive. i bet you wouldnt be saying that if your close mate died.
anyways back onto the music side of things, i really dont like rap and emo as they just sing about the most pointless crap which either makes you want to cut yourself or as some of them say "bust a cap in yo ass." a bit of contradiction here with myself though but it does sort of go into steriotypes like your typical rapper wears shit loads of "bling" and emos slit themselves, yet thats not the case. my girlfriend used to be well regarded an emo, although she just dress a little bit like them, and yet she doesnt do all that emotional bollocks, she has rather an awesome taste in music such as the who. |

Thank you Calvin...I never heard of any of those bands before, so it gives me something new to take a listen to.
I guess I missed the first two waves of Emo music and the bands I did know, I called "Alternative Punk." I never heard the term until circa 2000. |

I thank many of you for your kind words which, with the great anonymity of the internet, tend to be more sincere than words which are otherwise.
We had the funeral this morning at 10:30 and near the end the minister announced that one of Chris's favorite songs would be played. I expected Dr. Hook, but instantly recognized "Dust in the Wind." I'll probably cry like a baby every time I hear that song, again illustrating music's powerful grip on my psyche.
Anyway, I just read on the "Caring Bridge" website that his girlfriend, who was driving the car, is doing much better after reconstructing surgery on her jaw. |

Everyone's entitled to their own opinions... but these comments are all very narrow minded. Just because you guys "hate" a certain genre doesn't mean it's going to fail - there is such a large fanbase for every genre listed here and there isn't anything our "hate" can do about it. So you may as well stop wasting time complaining and do something/anything to achieve your goals. |

i don't like the name "emo" because technically ALL music is emotional. i don't like the "emo" genre, i think it's a little too whiney. there is a way to write a song and have it be badass, and there is a way to write a song and it sounds like you are whiney.
for instance, radiohead's "creep". what is the difference between that and an emo song?
as for "poser"... yeah i think that is if you care too much about showing off. you know what i hate? PBR. all the "cool" kids drink PBR because it's ironic. but PBR is gross. so you drink a PBR tallboy at the bar and wear your skinny jeans because you like attention. do you get what i'm saying?
drinking PBR doesn't make you cool.
oh yeah, and i HATE country music. the twangy guitars, the twangy singing, it drives me insane!!!!
another thing i hate: bands like paramore. that chick is what 16 years old? and she's singing about her heart getting broken oh boo hoo. the lyrics lack sincerity. they didn't really do anything particularly original. i saw them open for no doubt's reunion tour this summer. you know, no doubt PAID their dues. no doubt worked their ass off and forced their way onto mainstream radio on their 3rd album. paramore is, to me, just some band who a record label ad wizard saw that he could make marketable and they were just handed a record deal with radio airplay. |

well, dead topic revived, so since i haven't posted on a while, i might as well comment on a post i put up in the first place.
there's a lot of music and artists that can get on my nerves. however, im not going to blast them outright. i dont look down on a whole genre because i can't stand a few songs. speaking of paramore, i wouldn't put them down. yeah, they may not have much substance, and got catapulted into the limelight, but they still had to work to get there. it's not as easy to get into the business as a lot of people seem to think, even for those who get seemingly lucky. a lot of people seem to overlook a simple fact as well; theyre just jealous its not them.
oh
and i LOVE pabst blue ribbon. i dont wear girl jeans though. so im good. |

I don't exactly hate one genre, but the genre that I listen to the least is probably pop and mainstream hip hop. Each genre has something different to offer, but the music I mostly listen to is progressive metal(between the buried and me and dream theater), Jazz(hiromi uehara max roach quintet, art blakey, cliff jordan, to many to name) and classical/baroque music like Bach, Chopin, but I also love modern day compositions like Yasunori Mitsuda's work. Oh, on a side note im also a drummer, that's one of the reasons I listen to jazz and progressive music since they're the hardest, cause they have a lot of time signature changes. |
