Looks like I found some drums :) and a drummer to help me get back into the groove (I havent played drums fro about 5years O.o) and recording wise..I might be able to cook something up.

and do like begin vs. begin and adv vs. adv in each...

I mean no offence here guys, but some of you aren't intermediate. It'd be pretty bad if you guys told a professional that while trying to get into college or come in to record something for someone. It'd be more embarrassing on your part.

@ Jazzy - What or how would you judge yourself of intermediate/beginner/advanced. Its above me lol. Like techniques or what?

Analyse yourself. Look at the greats, compare yourself to Jazz musicians for example... then realise how insanely far you have left to go.

Theory. How much do you know? Are you able to answer every question right in my lesson "Test Your Knowledge?" Are you able to solo without messing up all the time? Are you able to solo without making it sound like a scale?

Are you able to play songs like "Guardian Angels" by John McLaughlin? "Into Town" from Diablo? Are you able to play a song, and understand exactly everything that makes that song?

Things like that.

Well, I have everything cept theory and the songs you mentioned. If I'm not into that kind of music I just can't learn it very well. I can learn what to play, but my heart just isn't set on jazz. I'm more into harder stuff. Say, you give me a Megadeth song like my gutar teacher did, and I learned it in a week. I just have to like the song. And even know its contrary to most belief, I know how to make a whole song, I just don't have a band to do it. Theory? I hate it. Sorry. I use what I like/need and go on. I can make a scale sound like an actually song though most of the time [depending on what scale it is].

I think this can be blown out of proportion.

Wikipeda defines Intermediate means "occurring between two extremes, or in the middle of a range"

so...anything in between to things is a sandwitch...um i mean intermediate.

But also many professionals don't have the skills of John McLaughlin or Joe Pass. Yet I don't suspect that Joe Pass could play well with megadeath, maybe musically he could shred with the best of them but i think is clean hollow body guitar may be a bit off.

I don't think you should ever stop learning but don't let your skills stop you. Kurt Cobain had a limited abilities on the guitar and yet hew was extremely successful.

but Ozzfan486, your ignorant into thinking's that you don't need theory. The sooner you learn theory and have a basic understand the sooner the rest of it will start making more sense.

I'm only using Jazz as an example, Ozz. My point is that their knowledge is far greater than half the genres out here. It's exactly why I'm studying it.

You need to know theory in order to get anywhere (unless you're McFly) Sorry to burst your bubble, but it's better you understand that now rather than spending years trying to get somewhere and fail.

@ Lance, I wasn't here 6 months ago. And that's also why I only said some, instead of everyone. I'm observing those who are improving, and I'm noticing a few who aren't, and a few who's ego's will destroy them.

@ Jazz/Tele - Okay. I said that wrong. I know theory is important, I just know that its basically infinite and therefore unconquerable. I'm not trying to be "ignorant" or egotistical, it just bores me. I would like to know the basics though, so that later on I could kind of piece two and two together. And saying that the knowledge of Jazz as a genre is greater than most other genres is complete opinion. It is the knowledge of the player. So is there anything [that I don't have to buy] that you would recommend for basic music theory? sites? lessons of the forum?

You're not persuing it because there's no end to it? But you'd become one of the greats, if you studied enough at least. Give it time I suppose, see how you feel then.

It's not really opinion to be honest, Jazz ventured off from Classical - which is insane theory in itself, then Jazz spiced things up and broke some rules, and created new and innovative ideas. Jazz is nothing but intelligent musicians.

let me tell you, learining music theory will bring everything together. it will allow you to create music with ease. it really helps. hey, whats the worst of it? you waste a few hours of your precious life?

Jazz, while I enjoy your passion, not everyone studies music for the same reasons. Not everyone needs to study theory.
Ease up a little, it's just a fun competition. Intermediate is a large concept and can mean different things to different people.
I get you, but sometimes take a note from the Beatles and let it be eh?
You are right, to become a great musician it takes a lot more, but not everyone wants to make it their dayjob.

I'm pretty sure Ozzfan wants to make it his career though.

I'm not forcing him to learn it, I'm only encouraging him. I did say give it time and see how he feels, I'd rather people didn't do it if they weren't enjoying it, naturally. I've also said that in my lessons.

Uhhmmm...Okay. I'll give it a shot. I have a book with a bunch of chords and basically basic theory and beginner stuff.

take music theory at ur school if they have it.

I only know a little theory, but I'm trying to learn by reading a book and lessons on this site. So far I've only gotten up to intervals and the major scale. In my book, next comes minor scales (which I sort of know about) and then modes, then chords. I'm not sure what's after that. :P


I don't really plan on making music my career (unless I work as a salesman at a guitar store, since I read lots about guitar gear... almost too much). But I enjoy studying theory in small doses. I'm kind of in a rut musically right now, so I'm looking at theory for a change of pace.

Well first it depends on what style you want to make.

Start with the major scale and modes and find a link between the chords.

Make a song or phrase every time you learn something, that way you're always able to apply what you know on your instrument.

Unfortunately for me, I went ahead and learnt crap loads of theory and never spent the time to apply it. So I struggled a lot, and still do when the pressure is on from time to time. So I'm saying it out of my own experience that it'll benifit you.
