Who is the biggest influence to your music?

I would have to say Skynyrd, Slash, and Hendrix. I know these are common names that come up a lot but You can't help what motivates you right.

Paul Gilbert, Buckethead, Malmsteen, Batio, Jimmy Page guitar wise, for bass I'd say Wooten, Pastorius, Steve Harris, Geddy Lee & Flea, Then drumming my only 4 influences are My Dad, Nicko McBrain, Neil Peart & the guy from Dream Theater. Vocally I can only mach a couple people and those are Anthony Kiedis & the Bowling for Soup guy. Yeah those are only my influences not just my fav's

Well my vocals are mine pure and simple haha, I've been told I sound quite abit like Johnny Cash when I sing sometimes..

theres quiet a lot for me, but my mom i gotta give some credit to. if she didnt wake up at 6am and run and bike in the morning while blasting her 70s rock/pop i wouldnt know much bout it. most oif the bands i like i would have to say "influence me" but there is a certain sound of a guitar tht i absolutly love. the guitar sound is what influenced me. one band? pink floyd.

That the Bucket certainly is, it's especially impressive when he shows off his slap skills when playing live solo's on the guitar

i also have to say skynyrd. skynyrds tunes really influenced me to pick up the guitar.

The first real (or what I would consider real) rock band that I liked was the Red Hot Chili Peppers. I began listening to them when I was about 8, I think. Thus, John Frusciante has had a big impact on how I see, listen to, and play the guitar. A few years later I started listening to older bands, my favorite being Led Zeppelin. So, again, Jimmy Page has also been a big influence on me. I'm always torn between those two when people ask me who my favorite guitarist is, so I usually say both.

lol rhcp in my opinion is barely rock at all.

Their more recent music is leaning to side of "pop", but their older stuff is a lot different. If you compare their album "Mother's Milk" (1989, I think) to "Stadium Arcadium", the most recent one, it's like listening to two different bands.

In my opinion, their older stuff was much faster and in-your-face, (and also very funk-influenced) while the newer stuff seems to be more laid-back.

Yeah, i duno what EMB5490 is trying to say. It's either that their old stuff is funk rather than rock, or their new stuff is pop rather than rock. Either way, his opinion is wrong. I mean, come on! Have you heard anything by them other than Snow?!

I like there old stuff better, but that's my opinion. I tend to like anything from the 70's and 80's better than any of the new stuff coming out from any band. Rock from this era was alive and influenced more by the life experiences of the band and there overall mood and opinions, not by what the label feels is a good image for the band.

The peppers are definitely rock. I don't know what else you're going to classify them as. Prominent bass (funky at times), distorted guitar/solos, rock-style drumming... Other than Kiedis's vocals, which are starting to lean towards singing rather than rapping, they are definitely a rock band.

The guitar is not always mellow, very little in fact, especially prior to 99's Californication. And what has being mellow got to do with not being rock?

yes. i have... i h8 snow...they are a pop rock band, at least better then nickleback. and grx is right, theyr like 2 diff bands.

the tune as in sound of their music, like ther vocals, guitar, everything sounds similar. to me at least.

I am personally hurt that you would compare the peppers to nickelback. John Frusciante is a great guitarist, just as good of one as Flea is a bassist. Give a listen to songs like "Get on Top," "Around the World," and "Give it Away." Those songs have very aggressive guitar parts, much different than what one would expect from "pop rock." Even their newer, mellower stuff is much too complex to be labeled pop rock. There are also a few heavier songs on Stadium Arcadium (their newest album), listen to Readymade for an example.

In closing, I think that their music and their fans mean(s) a lot to them. They obviously put great amounts of effort and their feelings into their songs, which makes them a DEFINITIVE rock band to me.

I still wouldn't call them a pop rock band. Their music may incorporate a few pop elements such as Frusciante's backing vocals and occasional keyboard usage, but the vast majority of their recent music is still a lot better in a musical way than what bands like Nickelback are churning out. Stadium Arcadium may appeal to the casual listener, but when you look below the surface, you've still got an album that can also appeal to musicians as well. I don't know how many times I have played Stadium Arcadium in the two years since it came out, but everytime I do I always notice something new about the songs, because they have so many layers to them.

And about them sounding the same - surely that's a good thing to a certain extent? They have definately evolved in the 25 years they've been around though, largely because they have made albums with 4 different guitarists, and used 4 different producers, each one bringing their own slight change. There's no way you can listen to the layered funk metal of Mother's Milk and compare it to the floating melodies of By The Way or the stripped back "just strat and marshall" tone of Bloodsugarsexmagik and say it's all the same, cos it quite simply isn't.

Backing vocals are pop? I think Flea gives the band their signature sound. I think thats what EMB meant. I agree well said Crunch. At least real Rock because there is fake Rock.

Not all are, but Frusciante's are very much influenced by doo wop, and bands like the Beach Boys, who were pop.

"Pop" isn't necessarily a bad thing. Just providing the artist still maintains some artistic integrity.

It seems I may have offended you EMB5490 (I'm not really sure...). Terribly sorry if I did, but this is something I feel very passionately about.

To get on the same page you should really see them live. Even if you don't like them it will show you how much they really put into their performances. And as blackholesun said, their records are just painstakingly polished to the point of near perfection.

no...i was jk. i could understand if i upsetted u, i guess if someone insulted led zepp, or boston, or gnr id prob defend them. and yes, they put tons of energy into their preformances, and they do have talent. its not tht i dont like the band, i dont really like the singer, its like a rappish, popish, rockish sound when he "sings" he has a good voice, just dont like his style. i have all the respect in the world for flea, altho i still dont like his tats. hes a kik ass bass player, second or third to buckethead or steve harris.

I recently found some new inspiration from some old Gospel groups in my vinyl record collection. I was listening to a group called "Reality" (Reginald Dees & The Reality, if memory serves me, and I was amazed at how the simplicity absolutely made the music. So, in short, old Gospel groups are becoming an influence to my music.

Also, Jewish or not, I think we can all appreciate some classic hymn tunes.

lol im shameful to jews lol. i dont belive half the stuff in the book of jews of w/e its called, u guys call it the old testimony, i think we call it the torah. but if the song or rythm is good, ill listen to it. unless its like death metal or emo, i h8 tht stuff
