How Do *I* Shred Like 80's Guitarists?

In a response to GuitarSlinger124 in my thread "80's Music" where he mentioned that 80's guitarists had so much talent and it was all about shred. How can I play that amazingly too?

Do not say practice. I know I need to practice. But I do not know WHAT to practice. Any certain types of scales I should learn? Skills to develop?

man its all about what your style of playing is. you cant be what you're not. music cant be forced. ask yourself this, am i an 80's shredder?

Gotta a agree with Tilikidis. You have to know what kind of guitar player you are.

well one good scale is the penatonic (i think i spelled rong) used in tons of 70s-80s rock, but it all matters what your styles are. some bands tht use it in solos are: scorpians rock u like a hurricane, led zeppelin in goodtimes badtimes, acdc u shook me all nite long, err wow thers many more 2 many 2 list tho those just a few.

I can do it. I can shred and play it. I am all over the 80's man. I play a lot of metal, punk, grunge, and forms of rock, and I like blues too. I mainly incorporate a lot of punk metal and grunge into my solos though, and a lot of punk and grunge and metal into the rhythms.
I will try the pentatonic's though

Listen to thrash metal or Van Halen, Iron Maiden. Learn pentatonics and minor scales. Get yourself a guitar with jumbo frets.

I don't know what you guys are smoking but if you want to shred like a 80's metal rock star then learn your scales but most importantly listen to the 80's metal.

The 80's is my life man. I listen to every band you can think of! I am on a mission with my boys in my band to bring the 80's sound back!
And I am learning scales as we speak man, I learned D Pentatonic Minor and B Pentatonic Minor. If you're interested I could record and send you something (a solo bit, not just a scale going up & down)

LOL at that! Yeah, GB666 if you've learnt any minor pentatonic in a box shape, you can transpose it into any key instantly, that's the whole point of box shapes.

i mainly use the diatonic scales... or random chromatics.

Southernguy: just keep at it until you find what coes to you easiest... and even then, there's no harm practicing in things until you get better in other styles. I don't believe that you either have it or you don't in genres - if you put the practice in, you'll get the result in time.
