What comes to mind is either another C or a F#dim (followed by C/G - G7 - C), that'd be a classic. But... anything that sounds good is good. You could try a Db or Ab or something else...
You'll probably get just about every chord possible on a guitar suggested if people keep responding to this topic. :) |

Mr gshredder has a nice one (sorry Shreadhead, go drink some creator fluid), just roll it over 3 or 4 times keep it slow and it is bluesy but sooner or later you gotta go guitargeorge's route cause you set it in C.
(Mr nullnaught, if that is in F, my butt is a cherry pie)
[Sorry also to JustJeff but neither Dm7 or Bb are gonna work UNLESS yer using them as steps to another key]
Consider hopping on the cycle of fifths
-make mine Jack Daniels please, and a Bud to make the boiler.
Take the II, to V7 and home again, home again. Jiggity Jig.
With yours you get C C7 F D G7 C.
Dull but effectual.
Embrace MoshZilla's approach, I just did and I dig this the most
C C7 F Fm
C G(2bars) Bb(2bars also)
Am G F Eb C

your not right Bb is the next chord following circle progression. its in F not C.
since what you got so far cadences. you can go alot of places( Bb is really square). i like jeffs dm suggestion. i really like I - vi progressions. you could also do F7 to Bb if you wanted to switch keys to Bb. your tonal options are Bb, dm, C, gm, am. it looks like your butt is cherry pie. :) |

In a private email with nullnaught, I make the argument that if the C and C7(so-called Dominant 7th) are played as an intro, which they could, then the keynote is absolutely F.
My apologies to nullnaught and JustJeff for my haughtiness, for not considering that.
I figured our friend was starting without an intro hence he is in the key of C.
I take the C7 to be essentially still the first chord - the root didn't change.
The next chord could have been ANYTHING besides F because the I chord progresses normally to any chord, in any key.
That is not the case here but it demonstrates the point that the second chord root DOES NOT determine the key.
I've been writing (yes on staff) for over 30 years and I sometimes feel stuck.
That's why I joined this group.
I'm not a beginner/intermediate but I am inheriting my old man's arthritis so my playing improvements hereon will be few.
That will slow one down -
so
I write more.
Screw the theory.
Screw the key.
If it sounds good it is good.
That's some things I've learned lately.
(no longer in a band otherwise I better know the key)
BTW I always respond or comment with a guitar on lap.

It could be in either C or F...
It sounds more like C to me though.
In the key of C, the C7 is just a secondary dominant leading to the subdominant (F). |

Hmm, yeah maybe you're right, but the question was about what would sound cool after those first three chords. Starting a chord progression with the V-chord sounds kind of misleading (at least to me). Therefore (not knowing what type of music, or what part of a song we're talking about) I'd say it's in C.
If you go with a Dm after the F I'd think of it as the start of a ii-V-I in C.
I guess it's simply my point of view on these chords... |

Either Dm7, Bm7b5 or a C7 (the last one working as a sub for F over which you could use the Lydian Dominant scale..I think that one of these are the way to go but why bother sence the Threadmaker screw the theory and scales. In that case there isnt any logical answer and just anything will go. |

What do we know about the key of C? It has no sharps or flats. What note is in C7 which therefore does not belong? Bb.
C7 is C-E-G-Bb
C exists in these scales: C, Db, Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb
E exists in these scales: C, D, E, F, G, A, B
G exists in these scales: C, D, Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb
Bb exists in these scales: Db, Eb, F, F#, Ab, Bb, B
The only scale which has all four of those notes is F. |
