I use a PC at work and a Mac at home. I have had 8 PCs and 3 Macs since 1999. The PCs that I've had that died were trashed. I have sold each Mac to put towards the purchase of a new one. I have had countless viruses on my PCs. I have had 0 on my Macs. Macs are more expensive but they last longer and can be sold. I can sell my current iMac from 2005 for about $200. There aren't any PCs from 2005! My wife has had several PCs as well that total above what I've paid for my Mac.

Trust me, I'm not a Mac guy, I'm not a brand loyal person, and I don't have Apple stock, although I wish I did today! I have a graphic design degree and that's what we learned on in the late 90's.

PM me if you have any more questions!

One more thing! I use my PODXT as an audi interface between my guitar and Mac. I've used Garageband, cubase, Logic and Cakewalk. I stick to Garageband mostly now cause it's so easy to use.

It does'nt have a usb out? Any mic input on a computer is gonna suck outloud. What you're doing in analog to digital to analog. With USB it's analog to digital to digital.

While in general this is true, I want to point out that it isn't always true. Last year I sold a Dell laptop from 2004 for $200 on eBay. Even dead computers from that series were selling for about $100 or so. So this isn't always the case if you know how to resell your computers. I am certain that macandkanga knows how to resell his computers; but many knuckleheads out there don't know how to sell things.

Yeah, you can always sell computers, or even their parts - I know this 'cause I build them quite a lot.

There are pros and cons for everything - especially PCs and Macs... they're both good for something, they're both bad for something.

Personally - I LOVE Macs! But I have also been dealing with PCs my whole life.

PCs are better for animation, designing - filming software, etc.

Macs are AMAZING for music, cubase was heartbroken I left him for Logic Studio and called for a divorce, but we have a fling every now and then. ;)

They're both amazing - but Macs are definitely more reliable... I've never had a virus on my mac. But this might also be because less people use them!

the mac that I deal with has no viruses on it but that could be because I refuse to do anything on it that may give it one. it gets slowed down a lot by other things like spam and stuff but that could just be safari. I hate safari. I have had no problems with the computer so far. lets hope i never do.

That's true Btimm. I should have been more specific about the PCs I have used. They are the ones that I've used at work. My company keeps all of the good parts and trashes the rest. They use the parts to build back up PCs or for contractors to use.

I love the PC that I'm using now! It's a Dell Optiplex running Windows 7 with dual 20in monitors. Windows 7 is great! Jazzy is right. There are pros and cons with both. But as a consumer, I prefer Macs.

Yeah, I agree. I think it is just preferences for people. I am old dog, so I prefer to use a PC. I have a friend who swears by Macs and he used them often for video purposes. He used to do some filming as a second job and just said it was so much easier to do and better for a Mac.

I imagine laptops (which is what I sold) also sell better for both brands than desktops nowdays too.

i use a PC because i bought a brand new, completely state of the art beast for $290 worth of individual parts from newegg.

i don't see how video can be "easier" with a mac. i make movies with adobe preimere, and the last time i checked that software was available for both mac and PC. same with my digital photos. my PC has a USB port, i plug it into my camera, i download the pictures, and i open them with adobe photoshop. macs also have USB ports and adobe photoshop. how is that any easier?

Interesting anecdote I know of a graphic designer who has a mac-book but installed windows 7 on it because he got a lot of flak off colleagues and it got tiring.

There does seem to be a certain level of mac elitism among designers but then again apple developed the software first and therefore all graphic design uni courses first started teaching people on macs and I think it's reached the point where people cba to change their ways

The Mac vs. PC debate is stupid, and has always been stupid. They are all personal preference. If you are completely computer ignorant and stupid (no offense), go use a mac. You will have nothing to worry about and it will do everything for you. However, you have to buy into everything with an Apple logo.

For do-it-yourselfers, get a PC.

For us nerds/engineers/people who actually use computers to further the development of new computers and electronics, there's linux.

How is this not offensive? It's no different than saying: If you're a virgin, have no friends and spend all your time on a computer (no offense), get a PC.

For gettin laid, get a Mac.

@mac as I mentioned in the other thread apple tends to be more closed off from a developers standpoint. You don't really get to paly with the inner workings as much.

Meanwhile with windows you get more chance to fiddle, although certain things are closed off.

Then there is linux where you can see every single scrap of code that went into it. You can reprogram sections of your operating system play with distros even make your own operating system from scratch. Everything is free. Everything is completely open.

So based on the complexity of what it gives the user to access mac is least complex, linux most and windows somewhere in the middle.

I do admit however the point could have been better phrased by Jeff, but it is an opinion that is shared among more technical people

Your average tech user has no idea how many watts their laptop/pc/portable device uses. On top of this, most don't even know the difference between a gigabyte and a gigabit (You have 2 gigabytes of space, you have a 2 gigabit connection). So, what I failed to eloquently say in my previous post is that if you are not "in" with computers and don't know the inner workings of a computer, nor do you ever want to know, go get a Mac.

Of course, even if you are, you can still get a Mac. I wouldn't. Most of the reasons why computers get viruses or die is because of stupidity. Whenever I work with GUI's or other interfaces for the enduser, I have to think "What could be the dumbest thing someone would try to do with my code... and would it break it?"

It's a legitimate question we have to ask ourselves when designing these kinds of devices for people.

i can't buy apple products because they are too... invasive. in a way that most people don't realize.

for instance, itunes does a lot of "fiddling" with your computer behind your back. you can't use an ipod without installing itunes. you can't use an iphone without installing itunes, and giving personal information to apple. i'm not about that.

apple TV works great to stream video and audio to your TV and home theater, but apple TV will ONLY stream video and audio played through itunes. this came at great dismay to my friend who bought it, because he couldn't run audio from other sources (for instance, a video game) through the same speaker.

why not? because that's just how apple does things.

now at the time that apple TV thing he bought was a few hundred dollars. at home i have an S-video cable and RCA audio cables connecting my PC to my TV and stereo. total cost: less than $5 and i can stream anything and everything.

i just can't deal with all the caveats in apple's systems. i also have a hard time putting up with their snooty "holier than thou" attitude. and i'm not talking about mac users, i'm talking about their commercials. shut up already.

(i actually refuse to patronize any business with terrible commercials, or commercials that are innacurate/annoying in any way)

Last check I did, getting the same components on a Mac and on a PC had about a $600-$700 difference... so you're paying mainly for the OS

And do you want a laptop or a desktop gs?

Winamp is a free music player that takes no person information and can rip music onto an ipod or iphone.

You can't use itunes store but I've actually seen instances were it is cheaper to get a physical copy of a CD than buying it on itunes.

@gshred if you want the cheaper get a pc, and I'm pretty sure you can always buy a new wifi card and upgrade it yourself!

Most of the reasons why computers get viruses or die is because of stupidity.

So here ya go again calling people stupid. The eight computers I've used here at work died or underperformed for reasons other than misuse. I had hard drives freeze up and die, laptop screens burn out, and mostly because the devices would not perform due to upgrades in software, and changes in processes that require more memory and faster CPUs. PCs for power use, as I do at work, are outdated fast. I use only the software that my work allows me to use. I don't visit harmful websites and I keep my PC clean of potentially harmful data. My job requires that I am careful with what and how I do things.

However, with my Mac at home, I click on whatever I want, go wherever I want and do whatever I want without worrying about getting a virus or causing it to underperform. Why should I buy a device that I have to be so careful with so I don’t break it? Maybe it’s cheap and stupid to buy a PC? Furthermore, a user shouldn’t be able to break your code. That's why people buy Macs. Not cause they're cool or because they are dumb sheep that succumb to their mass marketing but because they are easy to use and don't break as easily.

This isn’t an emotional response to pro PC users or Mac haters but just the facts. For the everyday user, which is most of us by the way, we want to pay for something we don’t have to keep upgrading or replacing to get it to do what we want. I bought my townhouse in 2001 for 263,000 when the comps were $240,000. Why? Because the previous owner upgraded the whole thing with new tile, cabinets and paint, etc. I’ve been it for 10 years and haven’t had to do a thing to it and I haven't lost a dime in equity still in this market. My neighbor bought the same unit for $223,000 a year before as a fixer upper. He got a home equity loan in the 2005 bubble for $75,000 to make all the upgrades I have. Who made the smarter move?

I don't think JustJeff was calling people stupid necessarily with that comment. At least, that isn't the way I took it. I think he meant that most issues with PCs occur to stupid decisions. I think this is accurate. I mean, if some goes and looks at porn for an hour a day or whatever, then that is a stupid decision and you should expect problems with your computer. This doesn't mean a person is stupid, but rather than an action is stupid. Or maybe a person (rare these days I would think) fails to update their virus protection. Stupid decision (or lack thereof), not necessarily a stupid person.

I guess what I am saying is that I don't think Jeff is trying to call people stupid, but he just thinks (and I agree) that most issues with PCs are caused by things that are completely avoidable.

I'm sorry guys but these arguments aren't necessary. And it's definitely not a good way to attract new members, should some randomly come across this topic.

Please stop the arguing now.

I agree with Btimm and to add -

@ JustJeff,

Some people just don't know certain things on the computer, it isn't always their fault... e.g. they would watch a video and a popup comes up with the play button picture and it could lead to a virus - some people who aren't used to these things wouldn't know any better. There are absolutely loads of reasons for viruses.

Personally, I think everyone should learn how to trace the people who make these viruses back to their homes and give them enough viruses so all of their items in the house are ruined. :) That would be my favourite day ever.

But I'm also confident Microsoft pay people to destroy their own technology - just so computer ignorant people will buy another one to replace their old. It means more profit to the big guys.

You're both right btimm and Jazzy. I said it was'nt an emotional response but I guess it was. I appologize to you too Justjeff if I was offensive. I just got back from lunch an have a whole new perspective. I should know better not to read and write when I'm starving! Low sugar I guess.

Just like if you told me to go make sushi, I'd look stupid doing it.

That's just what happens when you don't have experience. What I'm trying to lay out is that some types of computers are foolproof, in a sense of it doesn't matter whatever your decision is, you'll be fine.

I throw the word stupid around because that's what it is in my eyes. I deal with this stuff every day. The only other way I can relate it to is cooking. Not seasoning your fish when you cook it is just plain stupid, you have to do it.

So sorry if I offend you by using stupid, but that's what it is in my field. People embrace stupidity because that's how you learn.
