Songwriting

So im gonna start some threads about a few things... And as ELLIOTT Commander of the equalibrium force of all the land in universes 6 and 7 (and would be 8, 9 and the last precious 10 also... But Commander and conquerer, Phip the great is just too powerful... Not to mention Jazzy the Owner, dictator, president, and Controller of all the lands of Universes 1-5... I dare not to rival her....) i have the right to start such threads...

Anyhow i digress.

Im being rather serious about these.

First id like to talk about songwriting. Specifically coming up with all the parts.

As commander of my universes i know that there have been many threads on this, however nothing specific.

Id like to know how everyone comes up with parts. Not what they do first and second blah blah. But lets say they come up with a killer bass line, how do they work off of it, what usually inspires the melody of the piece and the theme of the lyrics.

I usually come up with a beat first. I'm always tapping my feet or making some kind of beat. Then I'll make up a riff on the spot and hum it. If I like it I'll put it into guitar pro. Then I look at the other songs I've made lately. Do I want the song to be funky? Progressive? Classic Rock? Groove Metal? I try not to be repetitive. After that I usually go with the pattern of that genre of music. Although I do mix and match genres together. I'm particularly fond of Progressive Funk Rock. And as for lyrics. I usually talk about government, human society, and things along those lines. I feel it's a good way to express my liberal ideas. When it comes to styles of singing I'm quite varied. I can't really sing well. But I can rap (somewhat, I more less "testify"), yell, and talk through a microphone. I usually find a way to incorporate these into my music. And when it comes to soloing I usually improvise until I hear something I like. Then I go along those lines.

Rhythm guitar first,then a bass that matches the rhythm,Drums
next,so the drums have to match.my rhythm,not the other way around,then lead guitar,so i know were theres gonna be room.
Then finnaly assorted stuff like keys and strings and
horns.

Songwriting is hard - it is entirely up to the individual's ability if he or she can even write something that will be a success. Some people just can't express themselves through words while others can.

Dumbfoundead is probably one of the most inspiring lyricists I've ever seen simply because he can make it up on the spot then and there.

My lyrics usually reflect how I think on things - words often come easy to me but sometimes I have hard times trying to find those exact words others can relate to... e.g. If it's about the world; I'll express exactly how I feel in a paragraph or even a page. I re-read what I've written and see if I can pull lyrics out of that write up.

Things will fall into place with more practice.

when im doing bass and lead parts i like to go on FL studio (because it has the best piano IMO) and make different harmonies or any lead parts that i might want in the song and then i find a way to play it on guitar.

the reason i do this is because i can make a wayy better sounding part when i use the piano as opposed to thinking of something and trying to play it on guitar for some reason...plus i can save it lol.

i make bass lines with the VST bass plugins that they have on there.

even though computers are good at making rhythm tones they cant mimic rhythm playing so i have to do that part.

im no good at lyrics so every song i have is instrumental ubtil i get a band

Im working on an concept album at the moment so i have planned out how most of the tracks are going to be i.e sad/happy upbeat etc so im working off of my notes untill its completed.

I wrote some songs before, probably not very good one's but still. IMO my best songs were written in a day or two and they the lyrics tweeked and re-written.

I always come start form the beginning, i find a little something, chord progression, riff to be the verse. I come up with word's for that verse and then decide what to do next.

Most of the time I'll play and sing that verse over and over and the chorus will hit you like an anvil over the head. Sometime you never come up with a chours.

I write songs that never really get finished. I figured one day I'll find some fellers to play with and help finish them. and also why i've never written a bridge. They are all verse-chours-verse-chours.

I don't write with a comptuer, i write with a guitar. I want to be able to perform the song in my bedroom before i ever try and demo it and record it.

Don't force anything let the music flow. If you have a riff that kicks ass, but you just can't complete a song around it, then let it sit. Maybe now's not the time for your song on that riff. Then again maybe you are not the one who was meant to write a song around that riff.

And yeah, I usually just come up with things on on guitar, and write lyrics seperately. I usually try to write the music first, because trying to fit chords around random lyrics is a real pain unless you have a set melody you're working off of. Even though I like riff-based stuff, I usually don't write it, because it's just me. I guess when I get a band, or at least a drummer, I'll write more riff-based stuff. I have riffs, I just think it sounds dumb to just riff out on an acoustic if you're the only one playing.

been writing songs a long time and its an in dividual thing everyone does it their own way in their own style -not everyone can do the music/lyric thing so just do what youre good at and more importantly what you enjoy -sometimes its fun sometimes its a struggle but the elation you get when you finish is supreme -ok everyone writes bummers but its a learning curve so stick at guys

The Rev's Rants - Cover Songs, Really

I came across different articles on the topic Songwriting and got useful information about music and song writing techniques.

It is good to hear the different approaches. I am troubled by the mechanics of songwriting. That is, the notion that someone can just pop out a song on command. I can'tI don't hear any of that here and that is promising for the future of western music.

My approach is to let the melody approach me. I've found it is sufficient to walk past the piano, slap two or three keys in a rhthym and then go take a leak or something and let my head work out a melody.

If I like it enough, I expand, maybe try it in different keys with different chord voicing. For this reason, I keep 2 to 4 songs cooking. Lyrics depend on the audience and the singer I'm working with.
