If where talking about music dieing, then we have to be talking about a movement. As a single artist(s) will always rise up regardless of any circumstances, so in that saying music is dieing is a really silly proposition anyway.

So as the only logical "dieing" argument one could have is a larger movement as whole (not faction groups). Well I hate to break it to you but music died, been dead since the 50s (you could make the argument some made it into the 60s but it would be hard). How can I say this, well all music has been in relation to what was going on then (late 1800s to around 1950s). Nothing "new" has shown up. Punk, ambient, metal (some metal [neo-classical, for instance] is really a reject of modern and a throw back to the romantics), rap, and on and on and on.

as for the music industry changing get over it, things change. Look at what happened to the visual arts. Rules get rewritten all the time. the answers is simple, move or get out. Any stopping of change is a act of death (not a psych guy, but isn't Freud's idea of the death instinct part of this, to return to stillness stopping "change" in a sense, again not a psych guy but the thought dawned on me as being part of human nature, probably got it completely wrong though).

the point is I'm sick of this ** and really wish it would stop, really, really , really. I mean honestly if music sucks today guess what, it's because we suck, so if you think there something wrong stop sucking. There's nothing worse then someone saying, "music sucks today, I wish i was born in the 70s." I mean honestly talk to anyone form the 70s ask them what they thought, and you'll see that your an idiot. Do I even need to mention Pat Boone. There in is proof why asking a dumb chick on the street what they thought is a ridiculous idea. Start naming really great musicians TRUE originators, T-monk, Satie, and most of time (where you are) the majority are not going to have a clue about what your talking about regardless of the time period. You just got to come to terms with the fact most people don't like music. They like background noise, if anyone's work is proof of that it's John Cage's (he WROTE extensively on what really is the phenomenon of Silence, so don't just go and listen to him your missing the point)

In the end sorry for the rant and I'm not attacking any one, nor was this meant to be rude (though I got a feeling it maybe be at points [ain't editing]). I'm just so sick of this ** and want it to end.

Im not offended, its just the name of the document, that is hell of an good documentary. Also there are many respectable artist there, who share very wise comments that are in my opinion good for people think of.

I know there been discussion and "rants?" :) regarding this "Music is dead" stuff, but this documentary is actually not that. Its more likely a "quest" to reveal and understand what we made wrong and learn from our mistakes, that is a desire of improvement and development in my opinion.

and RA, you know so much of music and music industry that your vision to look things are far more different than, how we say...a little less knowledgeable people. Who...should know few things... I know. That is a curse. :).

I have to agree with RA on this, music isn't really dying.

Music is like space - always changing, we never know what's going to happen next... but what we do know is that we benefit from it. Music is Earth's language - Earth's way of saying it's alive. It is the only language on Earth where each species can enjoy and dislike whatever they please. I for one, am grateful to even experience and witness just how much it's changed!

So let's stop worrying about what's going to happen and just enjoy what we have now. Maybe even try to do something new if you're bored.

I agree that music isn't dying, just changing, etc., BUT, I got (downloaded) the movie, and thought it was great. Really interesting. Erykah Badu (spelling?) made a lot of good points and seemed really genuine, plus there were a lot of other great stories. If not for the meaning, at least check this flick out for the stories, there's some great ones in it.

Yeah Ozz, maybe they made wrong name on the document, because it seems that some people snub it by just its name without even bother to watch it, it is really a great document with plenty of information.

Emp

Ps. I too think that music is not dying as long there are musicians that make it. Simple as that, buts its not the whole story.

Honestly, it's as alive as it ever was, because it's so easy to get instruments nowadays (good ones or beginner-level). It's just harder to find good music because of how whats popular gets cloned so much. The movie really goes more in-depth on that subject though.

there just one thing, I did watch it from start to finish. The only one who had a clue (in my opinion of course) was Dave Matthews. The chick with the hair was funny and all, I don't deny that, but really most of it was just petty.

and what is popular then didn't??? Pat Boone and countless others

I mean you got to be kidding me (no offense of course, it not being said in that way)

Also harder to find?? people talk about the radio dying as a bad thing. I'm a white kid form southern mass I'll take you-tube and the internet over the radio any day. I wouldn't have a clue about anything it's easier to find than ever.

the issue is, crap dies and what great lives forever no one will have a clue who the pop acts are today in 10-20 years, just like no one knows all the crap that was around then.

things change move or get out of the way

I never claimed I was smarter or know anything about anything more then anyone, especially the people in the doc. The lord knows I'm as lost as lost can be, nothing more than the whimpering poor boy.

I know I come across as arrogant and narcissistic, well maybe I am (kind of know it). but in my heart of heart if that is what you walk away with you misunderstand who I am. I probably am just as miserable as Ganya, a character out of the Idiot, but my point is just to discuses what going on with modern life, not to lecture or scold. I hope you can just get past my roughness.

@ RA,

He's only complimenting you dude :) Saying you're very smart and that because of your intelligence; it allows you to be open minded to new possibilities.

Great sharing. I always love documentarys about music in general. In regards to music dieing, It hasnt. I've sort of compared it to mining in my mind. you have to dig and dig through all the crap and then you'll find an absolute gem, given you know where to look.

I don't think music is dying either but this film is more about criticizing the American Music Industry. Anything art related that an industry can capitalize and commercialize will be ruined by that same industry. I'm not saying they ruin music but they ruin people an artist that get sucked in to the $$$$$$ part of it.
