Try running some scales and arpeggios.
Start slow and gradually increase speed until you can do it fluently on an acoustic or clean guitar. |

Run your normal scale exercises but do them in 3rd's.
A chord is constructed with 3rd's 1 3 5 7 9 11 13...
Your scales and runs will sound less "scaly" and more musical. |

Well, It's not that basic anymore if you extend it. Take any chord structure and then try to play only certain intervals of it and play arpeggios or arpeggiate a whole song. If you can include that into your improvising its a pretty amazing thing to be able to do. |
