i've been on a pretty big bowie kick lately (specifically "hunky dory" and "the rise and fall of ziggy stardust and the spiders")
also lately loaded into my winamp playlist are tycho (ambient/electronic, very catchy ~2011) and supergrass (english punky bluesy rock ~1995) |

ahh man ... My fav artist of all-freakin-time...Bowie, Yeow!
I remember being turned on to Ziggy back in the early to mid 70's, my friend Tommy had just bought the lp...I loved it all (still do) BUT when Rock'n'Roll Suicide finished playing that was IT! I was (id) become a musician as a result of my uncles gut-string git and that Lp.
STRONG Stuff!
....'and the clock waits so patently on your song.'

here's what (i thinks) is funny :::
i've listened to bowie before. i've heard the singles. i even had a lot of them in my music library! queen **, life on mars, changes, suffregette city...
but it wasn't until recently when i attempted to listen to bowie in "album" format. holy hell. "the rise and fall of ziggy stardust and the spiders" is an incredible album. "hunky dory" is good, too! to me there's just something about enjoying the "in between" songs. we all know the hits, but sometimes an album is just a great album. and david bowie knew how to write a great album.
(my favorite song, aside from suffregette city, is starman) |

right! ...and its something that we almost lost during the MeTunes/mp3-single wars (Lps are now gaining ground) all ya hear nowadays is singles , and for most people , "alone" (MePod-etc) ... Gathering around a stereo and playin a whole Lp/cd is a rare(but beautiful) thing now. I'm glad to know yer playing the entire meal! (as a Mastering Eng i am a bit 'biased'(double-pun, fer geeks there))
I have been listening to Dave's work in Berlin w/ Eno:
Bowie: Low ..+.. "HEROES" (Robert Fripp is BRILLIANT on the later)
XTC - Nonesuch
- Apple Venus/Wasp Star
Descendents - Cool To Be You
Mission Of Burma - Unsound
....let em all play!

Just watched Led Zeppelin Celebration Day. It's incredible! Watching them play all these old songs gave me the chills. Pages soloing is not what it used to be but his sound/tone was amazing! Robert Plant is amazing. He is possibly the greatest rock singer and front man of all time. Again, not what he used to be but for his age, amazing. And let's not forget John Paul Jones who is so good at what he does you almost miss he's there. He is the ultimate Zeppelin utility. Jason Bonham is no John Bonham but he is awesome. You must check this out! |

i remember a period of time where i was singles-focused. it was during the napster heydays. back then it was really easy to find a single and grab it. i also listened to the radio a lot back then (KSHE and K-Hits in st louis, classic rock and classic hits). so i still have a lot of "singles" in mp3 form on my computer.
but here's the ironic thing --- okay first of all i do still pirate music. and i'm not ashamed of it. i still spend more money on live music than most people do on electronic albums so that's how i justify it. napster is gone, but the new method of music piracy are "bit torrents". the way these torrents are set up, you don't download songs, you download entire albums or songs. and you COULD download a single song if you like, but it's almost easier to just get the whole album in one go.
but that's just one of the many reasons i switched over to full albums. and the other truth is, music piracy aside, i do still purchase CDs. it's a rare day that i pay for an electronic copy of an album (radiohead's "in rainbows" is one exception), but i'll gladly pay for a tangible record with liner notes and artwork.
anyway... there is just so much music out there now. now that it's 2013 and not 1973, not only counting how many more bands and songs have been created but also the exponential increase in ease of sending music out into the world... it's hard to keep up. so much music, so little time. so far i've enjoyed "hunky dory" and "ziggy" but that's about all of bowie's music i've been able to appreciate thus far...!
and believe me, i have really appreciated them. |

I don't really pirate music anymore; definitely don't look down on it though. I did it for how many years when I was younger(I mean, I'm only 20 now). However, I definitely love that torrents are almost always full albums. I don't think people appreciate enough the whole album itself as a work of art; that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Thinking that the order and layout of the songs as carefully chosen and stressed over, I think, makes people really appreciate the album in an entirely new way. I mean, you can still always skip over a song when it's digital, so it's not really forcing anyone to do anything, but at least when there is the whole album, there exists the possibility for such appreciation. I don't know though, maybe that's just me; I love thinking of each album as one inseparable unit with pieces that flow into one another and tend to paint some sort of a picture. |

further on this topic it reminds me of.... oh man i was reading an article recently on avclub.com about... it was about songs with paranthetical (()) names (see what i did there?). and one of the songs on the list was talking heads' "this must be the place (naive melody)" and it was interesting they brought up about how when writing an album sometimes placeholders are used. oh we'll write a simple song here, and a love song there, and then the album is sort of assembled. so in this instance, "this must be the place" really has a naieve melody, and they just left that in the title of the song.
it's just an interesting concept. i've loved modern music for such a long time but i've never written any. it's interesting to get insight into how albums are created.
also it's why i don't trust people who listen to the radio.
