How did you become proficient at singing while playing? I really struggle with this, I get thrown off. Which is weird since I did different patterns with drums all the time.
I understand it is practice, practice, practice like most things, but what I am really asking about is if you had some sort of particular exercises for it or anything like that. |

I can't really remember how I first started... I think I learnt the song vocally (so I knew it like the back of my hand) then learn the guitar then gradually I was able to play both together... sometimes I struggled but it eventually became easier the more I practiced.
Best thing I can say is to gradually add the vocals, one sentance at a time when you're playing. |

A clinic about singing while playing I went to had this good advice.
Sing the first word of each measure while playing normally. Then strum once per measure while singing normally.
Helps me. |

what i did is learn to play without looking at the guitar. play the song muscle memory style. dont think about the guitar. once you can play it without looking (focus on one thing. a spot on wall, the screen of a tv, etc.), hum the beat of the lyrics, then whisper to yourself, etc.
I almost never look at my guitar unless im doing a solo or "hard" riff.
Kind of like "perfect pitch" being able to hear a note/phrase and recognize it, it takes time. |

I heard one guitarist, i think it was Alexi Laiho. but its like guitar. just play the guitar slow and figure out how the words fit into the guitarwork. and then build the speed |
